The in - town location as well as the decor gave it a wonderfully quaint feel. The service was excellent and the prices were reasonable (in a European context). It was rather busy in this diminutive establishment when we visited but we were able to find a spot for the three of us. Our server attended to us quickly and did a great job taking care of us. She checked up on us at adequate intervals without being intrusive. The menu offered many tempting options from which to choose. My colleagues went for the Specialty Bakery Salad and the Pasta Carbonara. But I am a breakfast fiend and I had not had eggs for breakfast that day. As such, I opted for the Salmon Omelet with brie, mushrooms and onions. There were large strips of brie embedded, which seemed quite unusual. It was terrific and I would recommend it if you try this place. Our meals were capped with excellent coffee. Overall, I greatly enjoyed my experience in this delightful little shop. If you are in central Bergen op Zoom, it is definitely worth a try.

We walked up to The Fat Mermaid to look over a menu and, honestly, when I saw the Fat Mermaid Breakfast, we were sold. Asked for a table right then and there. Service was a little slow, I did make a note of that. It took a while for someone to come ask for our order. We were content to lounge on the patio and we didn't have anywhere to go, so we didn't really mind, but if you're in a hurry, I'd warn you about that. The food, however, was definitely worth the wait. I started with a cup of decaf coffee and an orange juice and then got the Fat Mermaid Breakfast (which, as you can see from the photo, is a veritable breakfast feast) and my friend got the Fat Frenchie (French toast). I was super pleased with my meal. The eggs were fluffy, the smoked salmon (possibly my favorite food in the world) was homesmoked and great, and I liked the assortment of breads. It's also worth noting that this is an excellent location. Right up on the beach so you can watch the waves roll in and the restaurant is well-furnished with many places to sit both inside and out. They obviously made choices with their menu selection and ingredients to provide high quality, tasty items. I'm partial to the breakfast items, such as the yogurt with toasted muesli, honey, and raisins. The breakfast sampler (I forget what they call that item) has several bread, some fantastic coriander hummus (homemade), and other nice items. It comes with coffee and juice, and the price is very nice.

Visited In Kannen en Kruiken on this sombre rainy day with a friend…read more It's a lovely, homely place filled with vintage and DIY decor, (Mason jar lights for example) making you feel comfortable right at the first second. We checked out the menu, and I have to be honest (being a student) the prices scared me a bit! They quickly redeemed themselves though, cause the portions you get here are amazingly royal. My friend had the Italian lemon cake and I had the carrot cake. Both of us struggled to finish these, but we did because it was too tasty to waste! Other than the cake, we both had a hot chocolate with whipped cream. They came in huge glasses, filled with actual warm milk and having to stir the chocolate yourself. What made it more delicious was that the chocolate was actual Tony's Chocolonely :). They also have a lovely garden where you can sit, but sadly Dutch summer kind of ruined the opportunity for us to do that today. Perhaps in the next review, if the weather allows!
