When I studied abroad in the Netherlands sometimes I searched for that little piece of home that was comforting and said "hey, its all good." For me, that thing was the Duke of Oz on superbowl sunday in Leiden. I had been to this bar many times in my many months spend in Leiden, but it just so happened it was one of the only places airing the game. Not only did the drinks taste extra good that day. If I can recall - and this was tough because I may have indulged in one too many Heinekens - they were serving up free food and snacks. Beer... check! Food... check! Superbowl... check! Now if you can imagine anything wrong with this picture you have some serious issues. But on that faithful night there was only one thing that would have ruined my most sacred Sunday and can you guess what that is? The game was broadcasted on a British station THEREFORE you guessed it... NO AMERICAN COMMERCIALS. Now if that wasn't a buzz kill I don't know what is. I really can't complain though, can I? Living in a foreign country, drinking the Netherlands finest, and watching the big game? Doesn't get any better than that.

Price is reasonable. 5-6 euro per beer glass. Plenty of options in beer and appetizers. Almost everybody prefers sitting outside and that's fun. There are 5-6 cafes near to (Read: stick) each other. You can't tell which table belongs to which café. There are always boundaries between these cafes which you can't identify except their folks. Haha... A mixed grill for two, incl. dessert; 25€. But the price is the least of the attraction. The meat was cooked to absolute perfection. The salad was crisp and dressed just right and I have to say, that it has got to be the best fried chips I've had on my trip to the Netherlands. The service was attentive and very friendly and the food arrived at a timely fashion. We sat outside in the small, but very quaint and cosy yard. Inside was a darkend and snugly lit bar. Very nice. Star #5 is lacking due to the dessert, which was a bit of a let down. Not homemade anything. All the r est was however, the nice surprise I had hoped for.

What a wonderful place to duck in to, to get out of the cold! Mr. wonderful says, "it's a gold…read moremine." We could no longer feel our hands, so we decided to get out of the cold. We came into this warm, welcoming environment and ordered an Irish coffee. The bartenders were kind and engaging. But the owner, "Tiger" was exceptional. He perched himself on a stool in front of us. He requested for a belly rub, but we knew better! We did give him some chin, scrubs and head rubs, and he stuck around. Later he requested the peasants (employees) let him out through the window. They opened the window to let him out, he returned within three minutes. Yes, everyone knows their place here. We will be back before we leave, and we recommend this place. We were serenaded by the folks sitting next to us - American music, too cool. Great experience!

Meh. One would think…read morethe service would be snappy and even remotely attentive on a cold and wet night with few patrons in the establishment, but I felt like a mirage when I came to the bar and patiently waited while the guy behind the bar and the guy on the other side carried on their conversation as if I was a mirage. After a few minutes, another staff member came behind the bar and I had to ask "Can I get a beer, please? Fortunately, this guy was at least friendly while I poured my beer...and it seemed he also noticed it was peculiar that he had to serve me while the other guy never took a moment to acknowledge my patience (much less my patronage). Despite the poor service, it does have a rather unique stainless steel (or some other similar metal) bar, and they have my favorite Amstel Light on draft, so for that, they get two stars. Again, meh. Too many other bars in the area to bother with this place.
