Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the food and service. I am a local, I've lived in the French Quarter for years. I love gumbo. I was told not to order gumbo at Deanie's because it's too "salty". I decided to be spontaneous this afternoon and grab lunch to geaux. My shrimp remaulade wedge was amazing-fresh ingredients and great homemade remoulade dressing. Unfortunately, the gumbo did indeed have way too much salt in it. So much, I couldn't eat more than a couple of spoonfuls. Deanie's Seafood was on the list of places I was told I had to try during my first visit to New Orleans, so I made sure to stop by. I ordered the crawfish étouffée--mind you, I had never actually tried crawfish before. My server gave great advice and suggested I start with a cup instead of a full portion, just in case I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it. I really appreciated that recommendation. The étouffée was delicious and very flavorful. Since I already love seafood, I definitely enjoyed it, and I think I'll appreciate it even more the next time I visit--especially after I've tried crawfish on its own. I heard so many great things about Deanie's; I stood in line with my friends to get in; it took us about 30/35 mins to get inside. They do NOT let you in if you party is not complete. We were looking for something heavy and sustaining. I really wanted pasta; my travel mate wanted crab. What we kept hearing was "try Deanie's," so we did. The food was delicious! I had the only pasta on the menu (at the time) the Barbeque Shrimp Pasta $22.95 and the Stuffed Crab $10.00 as an appetizer. My food was soooo good. My travel mate didn't like that the appetizer and their stuffed shrimp had the same filling. I would go back just for the pasta. The service was average, but fast. While driving back home to NC I had a craving for some oysters and luckily the Courtyard I was staying at was directly across the street. I ordered a dozen charbroiled oysters, onion rings, and a few shots of cognac. The appetizer of onion rings came out with a healthy portion and the oysters were perfect!!! First time trying this spot, it came recommended by a staff member at the Four Seasons Hotel and then the lounge staff at the Ritz Carlton said this place was legit as well so I had to check it out for the gumbo. There was no wait to be seated for dinner, but we are early birds. Husband and I shared a seafood platter and got an order of onion rings. WAY TOO MUCH FOOD!!! But so good. I've been coming here over the years and stopped in again last night after a long hiatus following a trip where my partner was served a steak that had gone bad. Well, he was out of town and I pass this place daily on my walk home so I stopped in again. They have a lot of happy hour specials and plenty of seating. Then almost immediately a middle-age, matronly heavyweight woman came just behind our pleasant server asking what we wanted to order - right after our initial server took our order. Spatial awareness must escape this portly curmudgeon. Why so grouchy? Better she go back to eating whatever she was wearing down the front of her shirt. We were handed bibs with our predictably messy BBQ shrimp so prevalent in every other seafood restaurant in Nola. What are we supposed to do with them? No offer to help tie them on? Impressive. Our shrimp were terrible: tasteless, mealy and almost impossible to peel. They had either been thawed and re-frozen, or worse yet, they were old and out of date. For what we paid for 6 shrimp, they should have at least been fresh. They were not. They were gross. The customary bread served up with the shrimp was a dark brown rock hard cylinder suitable for hammering nails. It was obviously burned so we asked for fresh bread. Why serve such crap? Do the folks who prepare food at Deanie's think their customers are stupid? Such abhorrent disrespect in a restaurant is outrageous. The heavy-set grouchy woman growled as she asked "what else do you wanna order?" How about our check, please? Our intention when we came in was to graze through several appetizers. But the shrimp were so bad, and the miserably grouchy tank trolling the bar was so disgusting, we simply paid our bill and left. The friendly and enthusiastic young man who initially waited on us might want to go down the street to any other restaurant if he was going to have to work under miserable Mary. It's in the French Quarter, within walking distance of Bourbon St. The etouffee tasted slightly singed and didn't do the classic New Orleans dish any justice.
