I planned the event from out of town in Pennsylvania and sent my grandmother and a bridesmaid on an initial scouting mission to other banqueting halls in the area and to this museum, and they both agreed that Hope Gallery was undeniably the place. Were they ever right! My fiance and I have a love for traveling and for lavishing time in worthy museums, and the Hope Gallery communicated the vintage travel-inspired reception that was held for us in Pennsylvania without any of the cost -- the decor is already there! The building is a repurposed bank from the early 1900's, with great stone columns out front, a fabulous stained glass ceiling on the second floor, and a vault that is still intact. The collection is varied but true to the old European Masters aesthetic, with both originals and reproductions displayed. The Danish family who owns the gallery are artists and collectors, and that was also one of my favorite aspects of renting the space -- working with a family business that made for such personable and professional staff to work with! The floor layout was ideal for an open house situation, with round tables situated in alcoves lined with artwork that allowed for significant guest flow. The kitchen and serving amenities were perfect for our needs. Guests enjoyed appetizers and desserts on the second floor and also browsed the collections on the first floor. The museum is also accessible to Temple Square, which was something we were hoping for in order to take family photos on the grounds of the Salt Lake Temple and then walk to our venue in order to maximize our photographer's time and our own. The short walk from Temple Square to the Hope Gallery made for some great photos and avoided the need to park and repark in the city. Hope Gallery does not have its own parking, but there is street parking and multiple parking garages nearby and none of our guests complained about finding a place to park or were deterred from getting themselves to the open house! Camilla, the manager, was a pleasure to work with, both in the planning phase and on the day of. She did the follow up, was incredibly responsive, provided tables and linen with the (hugely reasonable!) rental fee, assisted with welcoming and directing our 120 guests, and has the best personality. Upon our departure, Camilla presented my groom and I with our choice of a print of one of the gallery's artworks, which we now have framed and hung in our apartment as a reminder of the day -- and is also a great piece! This place is a treasure. I can't recommend the gallery as a wedding venue (or just for a tour) any more highly.

The old building has been repurposed into several different shops and spaces, each one with it's own unique flare. There is a private parking lot, although it's tight quarters. This would be the time to bring your Prius rather than your F-350, if you have that choice. I'm still getting acquainted with all this place has to offer, but I plan to check back occasionally. If nothing but to visit the Buddhist Fellowship and then have brunch at Roots Café, I'll be back.

The first time I visited the studios here was almost a year ago and I was immediately charmed. The building is actually an old radio factory - the historic Baldwin factory -but has now been completely transformed and separated into spaces for over 20 local artists with disciplines ranging from pottery to fused glass to traditional oil and acrylics and around to salvaged wood items. It is a great artistic melting pot in the middle of East Millcreek. Each artist has their own space, although in some cases the distinction is a bit more fluid. For the most part, studios are only open to the public during special events like gallery strolls, but there are a few exceptions. You can find Urbanscrap Studios open more often than others. Here you'll find a boutique with earth-friendly materials ranging from scrap metal jewelry to glass belt buckles, and the salvaged wood cutting boards, wine racks, and some sweet flattened glass vases. You'll also find the (new) Old Flamingo open with regular hours. This is the eastern most part of the building, and it actually fronts 2300 East. Most recently an alternative church, it's been freshly converted to a space where several artists are now displaying their one-of-a-kind furniture and home decor. There's also food afoot in the space. Roots Café is just weeks away from their grand opening. They'll have breakfast and lunch items, a sweet sweet patio, sandwiches, paninis and focus on locally sourced and sustainable food. Can't wait! In the summer this is home to the Millcreek Community Market, a market vending food and wares from local artisans, many of which have spaces here at Flynn. With so many different disciplines and personalities around the space you might expect chaos or a feeling of disconnect. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. There's a vibe of creativity, of real passion, and of community. It may be one of the state's funkiest and finest examples of local talent packed into a pretty sweet setting.

From the instant you walk into their gallery, you feel at home and yet you're surrounded by such beauty, it takes your breath away. The art Tom has so skillfully curated is from gifted artists from all over the world, many of which have Tom to thank for their international notoriety. Whatever your artistic taste I'm sure Tom has something in his gallery which would be perfect on your wall -- whether it's whimsical, impressionistic, hyper-realistic, beautiful sculptures of playful foxes or intricate leather models of Japanese Emperors which take so long to build that they wear the artist fingers to the bone. (And he can dazzle you for hours about the story behind each artist!) You must take a peek and his gallery: it'll bring a smile to your face and awe to your soul. On a more personal note, I know for a fact that Tom and Carolyn's hearts are pure gold. Only someone with the purest heart would listen (and say yes!) to a girl who walks into their gallery and proposes a preposterous request: please hold a fundraising reception during Sundance weekend, oh, and it's just days away. (The next door neighbor charged $5,000 for a two hour nonprofit reception for the exact same time, and yet Thomas donated his space out of the goodness of his heart. Thank you, thank you, Tom for your open heart and welcoming spirit, thank you for your hospitality and kindness. If you're in Park City please pay him a visit, you won't regret it.
