It's…read moredefinitely cheaper than dining-in in the hotel restaurant, yet you get the same quality of food as it shares the same kitchen. We watched the cooks prep for our food and it was handed to us fresh off the stove. Food wise, the portion size is simply enormous and we couldn't finish the takeout box despite lots of walking during the day. But that doesn't sacrifice the quality. The salt and pepper squid was on point, yet not overpowering. The deep fried prawns was simply perfect. You can taste the freshness of the prawn just underneath the deep fried batter. Fish was cooked beautifully and didn't fall apart easily when you slice through it. It's already 5 star experience and I would have given a bonus point to the restaurant for having biodegradable wooden takeout cuttery.

I will preface that my eating companions really enjoyed their burgers!…read more The Ivanhoe lives as a happy resident on the corso between the wharf and the beach. Visited by Long time friends and new acquaintances. Ivan loves it's Wednesday burger days at 12.50 for a meal. Our trio choose the second floor because the first floor is quite dark but the outside deck is stunningly sunny with wall greenery, flat screen TVs, heaps room, and funky wicker decor. Our burgers arrive swiftly- having come from, I understand the cleanest kitchen in the business. Chips are salty and crunchy and meat has been cooked to preference. My 'beef' with this burger is the size of bun to patty and the taste of the meat. Bun is too big and each time I bite-sauce and bits fall out. And the meat has a game-y flavour. Is it weird to say "animaly"? Not the best burger I've had but the kitchen does offer a huge array of options and I'd eat here again

This was the first time at Dee Why…read more Despite having a bus stop at the front, we found that not all buses stop here so we opted out of the public transport exercise. There was plenty of parking at the club. Many of these clubs offer cheap memberships with discounts on the food so you basically save the membership cost. Here it was $5 for two years. I joined up and with my dining buddy we "saved"over $5 with the food. We were there for lunch on a Thursday. The ladies at the till weren't the jolliest. I rolled up to the bar to buy drinks only to be told dismissively to put my order at the other end where coffee was being made. When I went down to the coffee machine I was asked what I wanted, I was then waved to the till halfway back to the bar. It was like playing a game of draughts with people who did not want to be there. You can ask for a schooner of lemon, lime and bitters but you will get a middy with no explanation as to why. I did that twice. Service seemed to warm a bit when I ordered lunch then weirdly, it was sweetness and light when I returned to order coffee and cake. There was plenty of room for us all in the covered verandah area and we all got our meals in a timely manner. The meals weren't cheap (even with the discount) but they were OK. My dining buddy had sausages but was hungry enough to eat my salad. I had a prawn mornay which was prawns in a cheese sauce served in a little dish with crumbs on the top. It was nice. Not a fan of the salad which was lettuce, more lettuce, a couple of slivers of onion and one (maybe 2) baby tomatoes cut up. The desserts were OK and the coffee a little weak.

I didn't think that the pub was all that bad, though in a way there wasn't all that much to make it stand out (which seems to be a constant theme where I'm concerned). There is a nice outdoor area, but once again, not one that really grabbed my imagination.

But it was renovated earlier this year, and the expansive pub inside doesn't look too bad. There's a sports bar and smoking area up front, and large bistro/drinking/beer garden areas out the back. Inside is a bit too dark for my tastes; a skylight would go a long way. But the drinks selection is decent, and is the food menu. They've got one of those cook-your-own-steak grills if you don't mind doing that. We stopped in for a Sunday lunch and found it relaxing. Good service, not too packed, nice clean toilets, shaded seats outside. All of this would normally add up to a 3-star review for me, but my lunch easily tips it up to a 4-star. For I had here, at the Brookvale Hotel, the best burger of my five years in Australia. It was thick, coarsely-ground, blackened, well-seasoned meat, with crisp, fresh toppings, delicious spicy sauce, and a springy brioche bun. It was an amazing, sensational hamburger.

Their menu is considered modern Australian with an Italian flair, which is an interesting fusion of cuisines. They have tapas, entrees (appetizer size), mains (larger portions) and sides, which can be shared amongst the table or paired with a main to make for a more filling meal. + GRILLED TASMANIAN OCTOPUS (A$28): The four of us shared this and it turned out to be a tantalizing appetizer! Three meaty tentacles and one flat piece were served on top of n'duja (spreadable pork sausage) with pipes of lime confit on the side. This was my first time having n'duja, which had a smoky flavor from Calabrian chilis that paired well with the grilled taste of the tender octopus. The lime brightened up the dish with citrusy notes. + SEAWEED PRAWN PILLOWS (A$22): While tasty, if I tasted these blindly, I probably wouldn't think of shrimp and seaweed being the two main ingredients. The shrimp and seaweed were finely minced and made into a batter which was then fried into a fritter. They were crispy and light with a soft mochi-like texture inside. Salt on the plate enhanced the flavor even more. + SNAPPER FILLET (A$44): The snapper was delicate, moist and had a wonderfully seared skin. It came topped with a few zucchini blossoms, but that was the extent of the dish, so I'd recommend ordering a side with this. It was placed on a pool of creamy white sauce (which may have incorporated Jerusalem artichoke as noted on the menu) and dollops of black garlic sauce came on top. Unfortunately, I didn't care for the black garlic which had a very earthy flavor that I found too strong and off-putting for the mild fish. The four of us shared a side of BROCCOLINI (A$14) which was a great pairing with all of our mains. It tasted super fresh since the stems still had a nice snap to them. They were simply tossed with extra virgin olive oil, sliced almonds and chili for a hint of heat. My dad enjoyed their spatchcocked chicken and my sister was happy with her sirloin steak. The steak was cooked more than the medium that she requested, but it was still delicious and had a zesty salsa verde. Overall, we had a lovely lunch here. Our meals were wholesome and I could tell that everything was fresh and of pristine quality. This restaurant is right on the beach, so we enjoyed a direct view of the water, giving this spot a beachy vibe with casual elegance.
