This is a business that has passed down the generations and the cumulative knowledge shows. This is well balanced by keeping up to date with the latest trends and methods. My sister called them and she fitted me in after my sister for a cut and blow dry. All the staff were very friendly and easy going and my hair looked great after Gemma had cut it, We decided that she would re style it and she put some lairs in and straightened it for me. I was very happy with the outcome and would recommend this hairdresser to anyone. The cost of this was £19-50 which I thought was a very good price for what she had done.

Betty Tigers (named after the owner's mother and her favourite animal) is a completely, utterly…read moreunique place. The polar opposite of high-concept, clinical hair salons, it is so much more than just a hairdresser's: art gallery, community centre, ideas shop words really are inadequate for describing how special this place is. Proprietor and chief stylist Elton is a one-off. He delights in the unusual, and the photoboard outside shows off some of the whackier hairstyles he's conjured up over the years (and he'll sometimes cut your hair for free if you're willing to let him use your head as his canvas). While cutting, styling and colouring, he'll often canvas your opinion on some of his other weird and wonderful ideas for art and film projects, community-building, or just generally putting the world to rights. He's often accompanied by a cast of supporting characters (the place is sometimes like a bit of a drop-in centre), and if you're lucky you'll catch them filming some of the clips which go up on their bettytigers Youtube channel (current favourite: their spoof episodes of University Challenge, featuring sweets, biscuits & other everyday objects as the contestants). Prices are usually ridiculously cheap (and sometimes Elton seems loathe to accept any money at all for his services). The only possible drawback is that cuts can take a very long time (especially if there's video-making to squeeze in), so make sure you set enough time aside. Every time I come out of Betty Tigers I have a spring in my step: something about the place's friendliness and Elton's wonderful attitude to life just buoys me up every time I visit. Now I couldn't imagine having my hair cut anywhere else.

As much as I…read morehave wanted to have my hair done, I guess the idea of trusting someone new to do can make you quite nervous about the whole thing. Of course, I did take a lot of time to do research on salons here in Chesterfield. The problem was that I wasn't find much for reviews on some of the places I have seen in town. Not to mention when you call, of course it happens to be when they are closed... for example KH Hair is closed on Mondays. However, the one thing KH had going for it was that I could book online when I realized why they were not answering. KH Hair is just down the road from one of the Pay and Display Car Parks, also conveniently near a bus stop. It is a lovely salon, very modern and definitely has a upscale vibe about it. I arrived a couple minutes before my appointment and was asked if I wanted anything to drink. They have a drink menu on the mirrors... coffee, tea, water (fizzy and non-fizzy), and yes... wine, but only one glass per customer. I always find that unless I am having colour done, there really isn't a time where I can enjoy my drink, especially a hot one, so I declined. The stylist asked me what I would like to have done with my hair, so I showed her a couple of pictures... knowing which one my usual stylist would have gone with to kind of test her knowledge/experience in curly, frizzy, thick hair. She went with the one my previous stylist would have gone with and explained why the other wouldn't work with my hair. She passed the test. I was taken back to have my hair shampooed and they asked if I am allergic to anything or if I have any conditions they should know about. I mentioned that I have psoriasis on my scalp, so they chose a shampoo and conditioner that is gentle, but also soothing on the scalp. No one has ever asked that before, so I really liked that. The haircut itself was uneventful, but I was really appreciative that the stylist didn't feel the need to chat to me. I know lots of people like to chat, but getting my hair done is a relaxing thing for me and I am happy to sit in quiet with my eyes closed and allowing someone else to try to tame the mane. Not to mention the lady next to me was talking loud enough for everyone to be part of her conversation... seriously if someone comes up with a quiet salon, I'll be their first customer. What really made me like the stylist is when she asked if I wanted her to thin out my hair a bit. YES!!!! Unless you have had really thick hair, you have no idea how wonderful this sounds and to have a stylist who recognizes that someone wants this relief... and knows how to do it and make it look natural. Overall, really happy with the salon, and more importantly with the stylist and really glad that I don't have to look for another salon to fix it!

I see Emma-Kaye every 6 or so weeks for a cut or cut and highlights, and I've always been chuffed to bits with the results. The prices aren't cheap, but they are absolutely worth every penny! You know a good hairdressers when you walk out swishing your hair like a Pantene ad... There is a complimentary bar, web access at all the stations, and they've recently added a beauty room to the salon and although so far I've only had a full leg and bikini wax she (another Emma!) seems fab. It was my first ever wax and she had me totally at ease, and it wasn't 10% as painful as I expected. Couldn't recommend this place enough, definitely prefer going here to Spa 1877 - which is generally considered the 'poshest' salon in Sheffield - the atmosphere is so much more positive and friendly, the decor is even nicer, and Emma and her colleagues are all highly skilled. Top marks girls! ;-)
