    Large Pizza

I finally made the pilgrimage to DeLucia's Brick Oven Pizza after bookmarking it for months thanks to the pizza hype machine himself, Dave Portnoy. Naturally, I walked in expecting a life-changing pizza experience... maybe angels singing... maybe my taste buds ascending to another dimension. What I got instead was a good pie -- just not quite the legendary, internet-breaking experience I had built up in my head. First thing to know: this place is old school. When they sell out, that's it -- game over. We actually had to call in our order hours in advance, so there's a bit of a jumping-through-hoops situation if you want to secure a pie. Also, there's no table service. You order your pie at the counter, grab a table if one's available, and drinks are in that classic see-through fridge where you grab them yourself. Parking is street parking only (no dedicated lot), so be ready to circle a bit. One pro tip: cash is cheaper than credit card here. Now the pizza itself. The cheese had nice blistering and the ingredients tasted fresh. The sauce definitely leans sweet, which I know a lot of people enjoy. Personally, I'm more of a tangy / saltier sauce guy, so the sweetness stood out to me. The dough is where I had mixed feelings. It held together nicely, but felt a little dry for my liking. I also tend to prefer wood or charcoal-fired pizzas because that smoky flavor adds another dimension that I didn't quite get here. Overall verdict: good pizza, just maybe a little overhyped for the score it got. Still worth trying if you're in the area -- just maybe leave the life-altering expectations at the door. Good pie. Just not quite the pizza enlightenment I was promised.

    Large pie.

As a Raritan local, DeLucia's has been a point of debate in my family for generations. I've always been Team DeLucia's, and even though I moved away years ago, whenever I'm back in town, I make sure to grab a couple of pies. The reason it's been such a debate is because it's completely unique. The oven is over 100 years old, and the pizza somehow tastes like the oven itself--in the best possible way. The pies come out well done, which is part of their character. If that's not your thing, you probably won't get the hype. Also, the biggest sleeper on the menu is the calzone. It's excellent and basically an entire large pizza folded in half. Unfortunately, while the Portnoy review may have saved the business, I think it also hurt the quality of the product. They never seem to have figured out how to keep up with the demand, especially when it comes to the dough. It rarely tastes like it's had enough time to properly proof. I see a lot of comments calling it a bar pie, which is probably a testament to how cracker-thin and crisp the crust has become. Today, I ordered assuming the hype had finally died down. The website still said they were sold out--even though they weren't--and I started calling when they opened at 1:30 but couldn't get through until almost 2:00. So apparently not. Sadly, the mixed reviews seem to be right. The sauce was good, the pepperoni was the good stuff, and it probably could have used a little more cheese. But overall, it was salty and oddly bland at the same time. The dough had virtually no flavor. To top it off, one large pepperoni pizza and a calzone came out to $50. I know inflation is real, but that's bananas. It pains me to say it, but I think I finally have to throw in the towel on DeLucia's. It flew too close to the sun.

    DeLucias brick oven pizza nonsense

THIS PLACE RUINS THE TOWN!!! We have people who park in quick check and cross the middle of the road instead of using the crosswalk just 15 feet away... I can't begin to tell you how many times I need to hit my brakes... OH AND WORSE, there's people in the included photo that park in the lane that's the only straight lane through the intersection.... This is ridiculous!! Police should camp this place and start cleaning up the nonsense!!! Shame on you DeLucias for allowing this to happen.

    Small cheese

Excellent but 9.4 Dave! I am surprised he rated this pizza that high I mean it's excellent, crisp, no flop, slight tang to it. I enjoyed the small cheese but I'd give it like an 8. He likes this bar type pie. Place wasn't as busy as I had expected so I dined in. Took left overs for my wife.

Was in the area for a meeting a saw this pizzeria that Dave Portnoy ranked 9.4. I had to stop by and check it out. I showed up right before they opened and stood in a short line. They seem to have a pretty good system. You order, sit and they call your name shortly after to pick up your pie(s). The place is small but several small tables if you choose to sit in. The pizza is great. Thin, not floppy and just good pizza. Overall a good experience.

This is an old school brick oven pizzeria, small menu and when they sell out thats it. Normally the wait times are long. I got lucky we didn't wait long at all. Went out of curiosity. Dave Portnoy gave it 9.4. Staff is friendly. You place your order then you sit. There is no table service. Drinks are from the fridge. Pie was ok. Not a fan of crunchy thin crust. It was too well done

I traveled 1 and 1/2 hours away to try this pizza. I am glad I did, I heard it is one of the last of the brick oven pizza spots left in NJ. Let me tell you this pizza is soooooo good I should have bought 2. The crust and all the ingredients are awesome. I highly recommend getting pizza there. Get there early because they will sell out. I waited 50 minutes for my pizza and it was well worth the wait. I will go back and try other pizzas. I wish there were more stars because they deserve more than 5 stars.

Finally was able to come in and try the infamous DeLucia's! After trying to call and get thru for a same day reservation for 30 minutes from two different phones and no joke 45 calls I was able to get an order for dine in placed. There is limited street parking so plan accordingly. We were able to park a block away on a not as busy side street. There are a few tables out front and indoor seating. I preferred to sit inside as it was hot out. The inside is rather outdated and gives a musty vibe. We say down and waited about 20 minutes for our two pies to come out. The margherita pie was delicious and a thin crust but needed some pepper flakes and garlic powder for flavoring. The famous large pie is well done and the crust had a gritty texture to me. It was good but nothing special in my opinion. This pizza stop definitely has an overhype rating to is creating the difficulty to get an order here. If you're in the area it's definitely a try once to say you've had it place. I give it a 7/10 for a bar pie. I can say I would prefer my thin crust pies from my local go to spots.

The pizza was as good as advertised! It truly validated Dave Portnoy's 9.4 rating. Highly recommend and worth the drive,

I was recommended this pizza by a friend. Also heard about it online. I had high expectations. And this first experience of mine exceeded those expectations. Absolutely downright incredible. 10/10.

1/16/26 - I had a very special celebratory lunch today so I decided to make it even more special by taking my dining partner to the holy grail of Central NJ pizza.... the one and only DeLucia's Brick Oven Pizza in Raritan, NJ. DeLucia's is a tiny pizzeria that first opened its doors in 1917. They have maybe a dozen tables and only one small oven that you can see in the kitchen picture. There's usually a wait to get a table. And if you decide to go late in the day, there is a chance you can find a SOLD OUT sign on the door because they only make a certain number of pies per day. Once they're sold out, that's it for the day. What's the hype? They make a very thin crust pie on par with the famous New Haven area places. We ordered two large plain pies... one to eat there and one to bring home for the family. There are no individual slices sold here but it's OK because the slices are so thin, you will probably eat double what you normally eat anyways. So ordering whole pies definitely works. The slices are EXTREMELY thin and crispy. The outer crust, although a bit dry, is crunchy and flavorful. The undercarriage is crunchy as well and the slices stand perfectly straight and at attention awaiting your bite. The sauce is tangy, well seasoned and wonderfully delicious. The cheese is a bit light but I suspect the thin undercarriage can't support more than is provided. If you haven't already tried this place and love those New Haven shops, save yourself the 2 hour drive to CT and give this a shot. All the ingredients taste premium and top-notch. It is not the most inexpensive pizza shop but I guess you get what you pay for, right? I actually loved the atmosphere and the pizza! When you walk in the door, it's like stepping into the past. But with all the stuff regarding wait times and sellouts, it makes it a bit tough to plan a family dinner here. Other notes: they do take credit cards. Parking is on the street and can be a bit challenging. Overall Rating: A-

Best pizza in central jersey hands down! It's an old school vibe and you have to preorder early in the day due to demand. The pizza is super thin and tastes fantastic. Street parking only. Takes cash and card I believe.

    We made it.

Ask the Community - DeLucia's Brick Oven Pizza

    Are they cash only?

    No, they accept credit cards.

Is this the place that David Portnoy gave the highest rating?

    Yes, it is!🤌🍕

Are they taking phone orders? Or are they just so busy it's the type of place you need to call 100 times and get lucky?

Depends when you call. You must call exactly when they open and can make reservations for that evening. Christian is the owner. They are very busy noon time and run out very quickly.

Are they still open? I tried to order this evening, and was told by Grubhub that they are closed.

I think they are on vacation this week.

The service is quick too, I felt like our food came out quickly for the size of our group. One thing to note is that this restaurant is BYOB. The food - it was okay. The eggplant rolatini was fine, although I think the eggplant was sliced a little thick for the dish. The lobster ravioli sauce was good, but the ravioli itself was extremely thick (the pasta part). It felt like more ravioli than lobster. I was really excited about the tri color pizza, it sounds so yummy with all the sauces! I was disappointed to see that the stripes however are all of the 3 sauces you get. So I felt it really lacked in sauce. What I think should have been done, is thick stripes of the sauce, cheese on top, and then the stripes for the plating. My sister got the pesto pizza and the also complained that there was a lack of sauce. Overall, I think this restaurant is okay. I'm not really sure I would be back as there are other pizza places in the area where I've had better pizza.

The garlic knots (3/5) were just ok, on par with the New Jersey average, and a bit dry on the inside (I prefer them a little more saturated in oil). They asked if we wanted marinara sauce, but it was subject to an upcharge, where we probably would have declined had we been informed about the extra charge for it (most places I'm accustomed to provide a side sauce upon request complimentary). We ordered ahead for a large cheese pizza (3.5/5) so that we could eat it freshly prepared out of the oven. The standard cheese slice was a small notch above what you'd expect from a typical NJ pizzeria, but neither the sauce, cheese, nor crust stood out. We also got a drunken grandma slice (4/5) which was the winner of the meal with the unique flair of the vodka sauce with cheese on a thinner square base. Overall, I'd rate Prima Pizza Kitchen a 3.5/5 in the very competitive NJ pizza market, and am happy to round up since Yelp doesn't allow half stars and the service was friendly. While I probably wouldn't venture out of my way to eat here again, it's a decent local pizzeria option for those in the Somerville/Bridgewater area.
