Buckle up. I want to tell a story. Before you read this, you have to know I was not paid to write this review. I'm a paying customer. I came home from a two week vacation and discovered a maggot infestation coming from the fireplace. I called a chimney sweep company to come inspect and clean the fireplace and chimney believing that possibly a bird got in there and died. Today, the sweep arrived took one look, told me it's not a bird. No. it's a dead raccoon on the damper. And then the chimney guy ran away screaming. Ok, not screaming but definitely got out of there quick but not before telling me he had a weak constitution and would rather quit then help me with it. I asked him for recommendations on who to call. He tells me to google it. He also says, "be wary of five star reviews. They can be bought." But I'm thinking, I have a dead raccoon, a maggot infestation and now the flies are starting. I need help right away, to heck with reading reviews. I call the first few companies that show up on google and leave messages. The third call was to Chris at DelVal Wildlife Nuissance Control. And he picks up the call right away. I got to speak to a live human being right away. Star. I'm ecstatic that I'm talking to a live person and I'm imagining I'm going to have to make an appointment. Chris asks for my address and types it into his phone and he says, "oh, you know what! You know how lucky you are?" I'm thinking I've got a dead raccoon in my fireplace and a major maggot infestation and this guy thinks I'm lucky? "You're only a few minutes from me. And he charges me a fair price (the same price I would have had to pay the chimney sweep company). Star. Star. Star. Star. Job well done at a fair price. As he's leaving, he says, "this was nothing. This is a really long overdue review. But I did not want anymore time to go by without commenting on my experience with Chris. Last Memorial Day eve, a bat dropped out of my chimney out of nowhere. It started flying around my house and eventually settled on my third floor. I, of course, freaked out. I thought it would be impossible to get anyone to come out and deal with it given the holiday. Chris responded in an hour and was on my doorstep mid afternoon on the holiday! He was super calm and professional. He calmed my fears and explained everything about bats and their behavior. We think he got the bat out that first night, but he kindly returned two additional times just to make sure it was gone (including sitting up in my stiflingly hot attic during a power outage). Important note: Despite Chris teaching me all I need to know about getting rid of a stray bat in my house, I don't think this is some thing I'd ever want to handle alone. We had a flying squirrel in our fireplace, and we called Chris the next morning. Even though he was extremely busy, he took the time to ask me lots of questions - and answer all of my questions - and promised to come out that afternoon, squeezing me in between two other appointments in my area. He came exactly when he promised, and sat patiently with me and my sons while we waited for this nocturnal animal to reveal itself. (It had been scurrying around on our fireplace screen just a few hours earlier in the daytime.) While the squirrel did not appear in the half-hour Chris patiently sat with us, Chris helped relieve our anxieties about possibly capturing this harmless animal ourselves, if it should return. Chris was wonderful! We had a pesky squirrel trying to get into our roof. He treated our home like it was his own. He responded very quickly and was at our house shortly after calling. He set up humane traps, but the squirrel was too smart and decided not to come back. Chris then sealed up the access point so our little guest was permanently evicted. He was always available to answer the phone, checked in on us several times over the few days the traps were set, and came within the hour when we caught a bird in the trap. Last week, I heard scratching and gnawing outside my 3 month old's nursery window. "That can't be good" was the first thing that came to my mind as I scrambled to find someone to take care of what I assumed was a squirrel. On a whim, I called DelVal. Chris (the owner) got back to me almost immediately and was at my house within 24 hours. He did a thorough assessment of the outside of my house and not only found where the squirrels came in (damaged soffit box), but also identified where the nest was and that the soffit box was incomplete at one end. He set some traps and checked back periodically to see what was going on. With the situation under control, he even repaired a couple panels of the soffit box so the squirrels can't get back in.
