I like a lager occasionally, but seeing a can of the Swiss national beer: feldschlossen embossed with "lager hell" seemed an apt description of the beer situation, as well as the style. Hopfen and malz has dozens of beers from around the world, including some from Germany. And about 6-8 on tap, with a happy hour during the week. I'm aware of craft beers in Berlin getting around the strict reinheinsgebot law by simply calling themselves something other than beer. Hoping more do so! And that we see more places like this.

I had the good fortune of being the one and only patron for the first hour and I sat and talked to the owner, Pieter. This place just has that authentic Irish feel to it. I actually walked a half a mile past another Irish pub that was closer to my hotel to get to this one. Maastricht does not have as much exposure to Yelp, so I actually had to look for a recommendation on another site. That is exactly why I am reviewing this restaurant. Yelpers need to know this place! I enjoyed a Smithwick's on tap. The beer was extremely cold, and the pint was a perfect pour! However, the biggest draw for me was the fish and chips. They are absolutely delicious! The fish is a rather large piece, done right in beer batter. It is also extremely flaky and I consider this a good thing! The pub is also known to be a good place to watch European football. The TVs are hooked up to sound and broadcast in HD. Whether you're looking for a good pint, good food or just to enjoy a football game, this is your place. And let Pieter know that Craig from Yelp sent you!

We've been in Irish Bars all over the world. This one is special. For one thing, it's clean. I mean *really* clean. It's really nicely furnished and decorated. The place has sort of an "upscale" ambiance, but retains the laid back feeling you expect from an Irish Pub. The food was terrific. We enjoyed large portions and the exceptional presentation. Prices were reasonable and the service was great. In short, this isn't your run of the mill Irish Pub. I absolutely recommend you check it out.

I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!

We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 9:15pm) and it was busy. There was a private event upstairs so the inside was packed. Luckily, we were able to snag a table outside beside the heaters. Nice touch with the blankets for you to use if you get cold. Only downside is lots of chain smokers but that's at most bars. Located (as the name suggests) right near the Dom, Domkeller offers good beer (German, Belgian as well as others) in a cozy atmosphere. For me, Domkeller embodies what a bar should be--a relaxed place where you can share a drink with friends and listen to good music (at just the right level) or have a good conversation. The music played here is fantastic and is an amazing mix that just about everyone will enjoy. They also regularly have concerts--I'm sure this place gets packed for those! Although a bit pricey (our bill came to around 12 with 2 beers and a snack) I think it's a nice enough place to enjoy a drink (skip the snack).
