This is our go-to delivery joint. I can't seem to get tired of the chicken gyro platter, which has shredded chicken thigh, buttery rice, and a refreshing lil salad. High quality stuff, prepared well. It also always comes with copious fresh bread, which they might make there? Try dipping it in olive oil with zataar- it makes the meal. If you're going to a performance at BAM, and especially if you're with a group of more than 3 friends, this is your go-to. Other spots close by are small or so trendy it's hard to get in & served in time for a show but for some bizarre reason this is never so crowded. I say bizarre because the food is consistently delicious. Among the top three falafel plates I've had in the city (I still mourn your loss Olive Vine). Fab tahini, great tzaziki. The chicken kebab is addictive -- tender, not overlooked, and just enough herb / spice to be distinctive. Tastes like you grilled it yourself on a sunny summer day. I kept stealing bites from my friends on our most recent visit. Fries are excellent! Mostly stuck to kebabs, Greek salad (fresh!), hummus (outstanding!) and falafel so far so can't report on lamb and other dishes. Pleasant, noncommittal but attentive service. And just fast enough so you don't feel rushed but can sit, take a few minutes to discuss options, eat at a good pace and STILL make it back to the BAM movie theater in under an hour. I've been in a love affair with Turkish and Mediterranean food ever since I discovered what hummus was, so it's hard for me not to LOVE a Turkish place. And boy do I love this place. My boyfriend and I often frequent here when attending a movie or show at BAM. It's in a great location with lots of hustle and bustle going on outside that makes for great people watching as well. I love to start meal off with the hummus plate (always) and/or the grape leaves both are very good! The only thing I wished they had was olives! Strange they don't offer those as a side. I have tried the Yogurtlu Chicken platter, stuffed cabbage, chicken gyro and chicken adana kebab. All of which are delicious! I'm always too stuffed to try their desserts but have seen the Baklava come out and it looks amazing! Came here for a rush meal. Its 5pm and I haven't eaten since my morning oats at 7.30am. So yes I am seriously hungry and on a food hunt. I had some vague memory of eating at Deniz some years ago [before becoming a Yelpper] so I thought I would go for it. Service was immediate, quick no messing about. I ordered a Gyro plate which came in 5 minutes so maybe the chicken was already cut or they have some magic slicer that whips up food in record time. In any event the chicken was good, the salad great and the bread ok. No complaints [I didnt bother with the rice] Tasty fast and unceremonious. OK I am going to start taking food photos for this Yelp thing from now. Deniz is ok food. Not brilliant ambiance, actually its quite dull though I had a window view onto Fulton so I could watch at my leisure the cops pick on a skate border and cyclist for who know what. Pathetic these people are truly sad. Three stars because 4 seems too much but I would eat here again if I was around and hungry. Stopped by after Barclays - cute corner restaurant - EXCELLENT service. Lamb kebabs were good - not amazing, rice was good and side salad was really yummy. Turkish bread was fresh and we love fresh bread, We didn't like their tzisiki sauce at all - might be the worst I ever had but our meal was still good, I would go back - but would order differently. I've been to Deniz before but my most recent trip has won a good review from me. Needing to sober up from a day of drinking which started at noon I came to Deniz in the middle of the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival at BAM. Figured it was a good option to fill up but I needed more that just that. I also needed a iPhone 5 charger. I come barreling in, screaming about an iPhone 5 charger and if they accept credit card. They assured me, they could help me with both issues and sat me away from anywhere I could scare anyone. I stare at the menu for awhile and contemplate what I should have. Something filling, which can get me through the night. Stuffed cabbage it is! Now I know what you want to ask me, "Mitch you we're pretty bombed. Can I trust your opinion of the food?" Well I have only one thing to say. How dare you question me! I may have been drunk, but I've been drunk and not enjoyed my meal before. The stuffed cabbage was excellent and I'll stand by that. Tip: I do not want to smell your Drakkar Noir or whatever strong cologne you are wearing when you serve food. That is restaurant 101-type stuff. It messes with your ability to taste the food. I have no clue how this restaurant is still in business. I am no Turkish food expert, BUT Istanbul is one of my favorite places ever, I like to visit when I can and I am pretty familiar with Turkish food (often homemade via friends and family). I think that en masse every item is sub-par at Deniz, shockingly (This includes the bread, hummus, salads, lentil soup, grape leaves, ezme, falafel...). I have truly been upset each time that I have dined here. I mean, the bread (?!), seriously? There are other pretty good Turkish restaurants in NYC - but they are all in Manhattan. This place is amazing!! I was born in Bulgaria, and the eggplant salad is EXACTLY like my grandmother and my mom make at home. Just roasted eggplant with some garlic and red pepper, not too much vinegar like a lot of other places. I have a very sensitive stomach and I get heartburn or stomach pains from eating at restaurants where the food is too processed or greasy, but I have NEVER had a problem here (granted I order pretty conservatively getting a chicken kebab, a soup or another appetizer). I have Seamless-ordered from here a handful of times, and while the food is tasty, there's a few consistent problems with this place. We can't give them a try any longer :/@ The prices are too high for a "non organic menu" - also the biggest issue is with the delivery crew. Every time we have ordered, they don't even try the buzzer and they call us, then speak in 100% Spanish and we can't understand anything that they are saying (I wish I spoke fluent Spanish but I don't). We then have to call the restaurant and explain that they need to buzz in, then meanwhile the food is getting cold etc.. I have no problem with the fact that English is not their first language, it's more that they don't even try to use the buzzer. We live in a very secure building and they simply MUST buzz in for us to open the door. There's no other way to let them in and we shouldn't have to take the elevator down because they aren't trained properly. The directions are clearly written on the directory. Their delivery crew either doesn't even try to use the buzzer OR has no idea how to. It's not their fault, but it is the responsibility of the restaurant manager to hire the right staff, or properly train people, this is a fundamental requirement of any NY restaurant. 4/4 times we have ordered from here this has happened. Fun! The lady and I dropped on a whim for a late-night snack and drink. Unsure if they were trying to close down, our apprehension must have been obvious. The bartender came outside and urged us "Come in!" Sitting at the bar, we were greeted by friendly staff. Burak the bartender made us laugh the entire time we were there. I have no idea how I should start this review. This place was incredible!! I am a sucker for good Mediterranean food and this place made my taste buds tingle. I was more focused on the food rather than layout but I did look around and like the placement of the tables, wall decorations, and I like the bathrooms. The bread was probably the thing that impressed me the most surprisingly, I was stocking up soo much carbs before my penne vodka was ready. The spinach/cheese rolls, falafel calamari were all spot on. *Keep in mind I came with a group for a birthday dinner* I did regret getting pasta when I could've had the kabob or the stew two of my friends had which did taste better than my pasta. Went for dinner with my boyfriend this Tuesday because a vegan friend recommended it. Also wanted to refresh my fond memory of my Turkish trip as I had a great culinary experience while traveling the country, every ting I ate there was so fresh, full of flavor and delightful. I would have to say its a very disappointing dinning experience, rather. I ordered the lamb shank and my boyfriend had the grilled Branzino, both dishes are sub-par, though the fish was slightly more edible. The lamb shank not just lacked flavor and seasonings, with no source on the plate, the meat was very dry and gamy. At the end, it started to upset my stomach as I was trying to eat more since I was quite hungry. The mash potato side was very dense as well, felt like fake engineered starch. The fish was not very fresh either. The meat was a bit dense, there were no herbs to compliment the fish and just charred grilled, not the normal light, sweet texture of a Branzino fish. The eggplant salad was the only salvation of such disastrous dinning experience, but the plate was rather small anyway. So I was not a happy camper with this place. Seriously speaking, I have not eaten such bad food for a long time. read more

This is a superb restaurant serving some of the best Mediterranean fare in all of Brooklyn. I came here after seeing Batsheva Dance Company at BAM and this late night dining excursion did not disappoint. I knew I wanted to start with the fried calamari and it did not disappoint. The warm marinara sauce was a welcome alternative to the usually cold sauce that accompanies this delicacy. I had not had a sidecar in quite some time and it looked like the bartender was mixing up his concoctions with deft skill and attention. So I started off with one and wound up having another one. These drinks were five star in all categories: presentation, taste, alcohol content and quantity. I felt like I got my $12.00 worth for each drink. The bread is addictive and you can easily get full off of it before the meal comes. I asked for some olive oil to dip my bread in and they obliged. The seafood options were all amazing but I decided to go with the grilled shrimp. I was expecting one average sized skewer with medium shrimp, but this dish was served with about eight large succulent shrimp on two skewers char-grilled to perfection. Each skewer also contained a red/green charred pepper. The rice was cooked to a delicate fluffiness and it was amazing. The special sauce that came with this dish was similar to a remoulade and the lemon to spritz over the entire dish was fresh and aromatic. For my to go dish I had the salmon shish kebab and it came with a side salad and rice. I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience here and the staff were all accommodating and attentive. Zina was my main server so I want to give a big shout out to her. I will definitely be back next time I go to BAM during the summer. read more

This was my second time coming to Deniz and I knew there was a reason why it had been about five years since I first ate dinner there, I just couldn't remember why. The food is meh and overpriced, though I'm guessing that the rent is expensive in this sought after pocket of Fort Greene and the owners have to recoup profits somehow. I had the mixed meat grill which is $20. It comes with chicken gyro, chicken shish kebab, lamb shish and adana (kafta) kebab served with rice and salad. The chicken kebab was well marinated and moist and the rice was very good--it had kind of an almondy taste to it. The yogurt sauce was liquidy and had no flavor. All of the other meats were just okay. I didn't even bother taking my leftovers home. Service here is fine and this is a nice place to sit outside and people watch. The food, though? Meh. read more

Recently I played a game called The Awesome Game where you submit some of the most awesome things in the word, and your submissions are pitted against others and you argue them mock-trial style. I'm a nerd. The reason I mention this is because one of my submissions was bread. Yes, bread. Bread was up against such amazing things as Nelson Mandela, Beaches, and Photosynthesis, etc. Well I learned something as I passionately argued about how bread is both basic and decadent, simple and refined. As I argued that bread was one of my most favorite things ever, I learned that others, apparently, don't feel the same way. Well, for those of you who feel like I do about bread -- and come on, yelpers, I know you're out there -- you should know that Deniz has very yummy bread. When you order delivery, each dish gets its own appetizer plate-size round of golden crispy foccacia dusted with white and black sesame seeds. And it is so, so yummy. You'll never want pita again. I've never eaten at Deniz, but I order take out from there. Their salmon scallopini is great, so is the char grilled shrimp salad as well as the octopus salad. The hummus is also fantastically creamy and delicious. The zucchini pancakes, lightened with mint, are also tremendous. I highly recommend it. But leave room for bread. read more

A lot of these reviews are kind of unfair, because you guys simply are not ordering the right dishes. Seriously. The place is called "Deniz" and has a fish as its logo for a REASON. That reason is, GET THE DAMN BRANZINI. It is probably the best bit of whole fish goodness you'll find in the area. And I'm serious about my fish. Give me a whole one, and 20 minutes later it's ready for display at the Museum of Natural History. Also, as an appetizer, get the Shepherd Salad. It's a very simple Mediterranean salad that they do perfectly, with mint, parsley, feta and SUMAC! Yay! I'm not really a tomato person but really, these guys must get theirs shipped from some holy tomato oasis. They are PERFECT. No, their lamb gyro is NOT spectacular. But their kebabs are. And the marinated steak is to die for. All in all a very good place. The service is very nice and attentive. And they love my mama! A+!! Yes, I agree they can be a little on the pricey side. I've lived in the neighborhood for years, and Deniz is a staple for us. We've taken many guests there to eat and they have all been very happy if not impressed by the food. The restaurant itself, it's nicely decorated. It's not fine dining, but it's a great value for the price. Outdoor seating in the warmer months. Also, close to BAM. I think it is a family owned and operated restaurant, because they've had the same staff since I started coming. I always appreciate when it's apparent there is not a lot of staff turn-over. They all work as a team, and the waiters have consistently been very warm and attentive. The menu is vast, and there are enough choices for every palate and dietary need (vegetarian, pescatarian, even some random Italian dishes). They also have a FULL bar and great desserts. The Baklava is some of the best I've had here in NYC. The dishes I usually get (once I like something I usually stick with it) are the lamb gyro (only weekends), actually any of the lamb dishes, the lentil soup is amazing, the cold appetizers and the rice pudding or baklava. So by now I think I've established a pretty good hold on Turkish/Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant interior looked like a large modern diner, and was sparsely populated. There was an elaborate cocktail menu - Red Flag The lentil soup was watery and the ambitious and delicate attempt of adding tomato sauce made it taste like tomato soup with milly grains. It wasn't rich, it was watery. It looked like baby vomit - Yellow Card The Sigara Boregi, phyllo filled with spinach and feta cheese, was not fresh. They looked like slim eggrolls and the phyllo was old - Red Card The falafel were just okay - deep fried, symmetrically arranged around some hummus. Pregnant pause. After we were done, the waiter came by, and kind of accosted us with this round platter of individually saran-wrapped Turkish desserts. Why is saran-wrapping things a theme here? While the waiters were somewhat attentive, we waited and waited for them to come back to pick up the check so we could pay. They have a very reasonably priced lunch menu that allows you to have an entree and an appetizer. I love their tabuli and their shish kabob and their adana kabob. Actually, I love everything. I've gone here a million times and they have ALWAYS been great. Consistently fresh, clean, and delicious. While the food is definitely the star, the staff is what really makes this place somewhere I constantly want to go back to. They are the nicest and friendliest people.
