Dose in Long Lane is my favourite coffee shop atm. And I don't even drink coffee! I'm lucky it's so close because when I have friends round and they look horrified at my 3 year old supermarket own brand coffee offering (told you I didn't drink coffee) I can nip out to get som 'ahhh coffee' from Dose. And while I'm there pick up packets of leaf tea (by the gram) from Waterloo Tea, and Bircher, and sandwiches which are a meal in themselves etc etc. Actually wish Dose wasn't so close - I spend far too much money there! read more

Dose is one of a handful of cafes at the forefront of London's coffee movement. They have cheap (and absolutely delish) espresso shots at the bar that you can enjoy while you chat to James. Everytime I go I wind up with a cappuccino, an espresso and a BLT. I highly recommend the combo. read more

The best coffee in London! I'm still high on my caffeine rush, as I couldn't stop after my first coffee! Liked the cakes, too. Then I found out that they run a mobile loyalty scheme with Stampfeet, a new kind of loyalty card for the iPhone. So now I can get a FREE dose of dose coffee after 10 visits! (not that I am in the market for a new coffee place in EC1 after finding dose, but maybe it can help me to find more places like this in other areas of London...) read more

Okay! Alright! Enough already! I eventually made it over to Dose Espresso and YES they make the best espresso I've ever had in London, and now I'm going back there for it every chance I get! When a professional cook, the food and drink editor for a popular London website and even a competitor coffee shop owner all rave on and on (and on!) about how great the espresso is at one particular London café, it's a given that said café definitely deserves a visit. So visit I did. And now the snug lil Dose Espresso, situated on the south side of Smithfield Market on the outer edge of the City of London, is my de facto destination for a robust shot of flavourful and potent caffeinated gorgeousness. Not just some bog standard coffee shop, Dose Espresso is an owner-operated artisanal espresso bar with a manifesto of a list of ethical policies which includes responsible sourcing (Fairtrade is Dose's minimum standard), using only organic milk from British farms and treating everyone with respect, from the coffee farmer to the dairy farmer to the barista to the City analysts getting their morning dose. Nice. See the Dose website for all six points of this caring café's ethical policies. Dose's owner-operator, James, has a stated aspiration to create the most beautiful coffee in the City of London. The dude takes his coffee very seriously. Such thoughtfulness and ambition can only result in a quality finished product that's well worth raving about. Imagine: a delicious cup of coffee made by somebody who actually gives a damn. Revolutionary. Obviously, Dose offers a full range of coffee drinks, but I've gotta recommend the espresso especially if you're going there for your first time. It's the best way to give your palette a true sense of how much consideration James and crew put into each cup. After your shot of wonderous espresso, branch out and discover your favourite flat white, Gibraltar, macchiato you name it. With a range of goodies from cake shop, Bea's of Bloomsbury, as well as sandwiches and plenty of other tasty treats, an a.m. pit stop or lunchtime excursion to this centre of coffee making excellence is a no brainer. Well run joint that has stuck to its guns and not expanded all over the place like so many other aussie style coffee bars. Prices probably 10p too high but still great value compared to a few others who are pushing to £2.70 mark up the road. read more
