For a' that, an' a' that, It's coming yet for a' that, That Man to Man, the world o'er, Shall brothers be for a' that." Happy birthday weekend, Rabbie Burns! And for this occasion to the best whisky locale in town did we hie our wee selves once again. Sure, you can get the standard global bottlings in most big stores in town, but when you want something different, that much more special, do consider heading to Gregor Haslinger's lovely store in the heart of Sachsenhausen. He fell in love with the beautiful amber liquid while a bartender back in his uni days, and it clearly shows in the care and details throughout the store. Not much dust on any of the many bottles! Not to mention his eagerness to answer questions or simply chat about the golden stuff. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is not only the best place in Frankfurt, but one of the top five sources of all things whisky that I've been to - both in and out of Germany. Single malts, some special blends, literature, and a whole lot of friendly and deep knowledge you'll find ready to greet you in that warm, inviting wood interior. Sometimes it's just so nice to sit in one of the big leather armchairs and take in the presence of those twinkling bottles lined along the many shelves. Do a little twirl and you'll get a near 360° view of the stuff. Just makes me happy! There's no whisky straight out of a cask, but still, I like to think that if any of that Angels' share lark is true, then it doesn't hurt to take in a few nice deep breaths of air while absorbing the atmosphere of the store :) Deeply involved in the whisky community and the pursuit of continued education, Gregor regularly puts on really great tasting evenings and other such events. And a special note to all fledglings, novices, and neophytes: take heed! This place is most definitely also for you! He's especially excited and happy to help us learn more about the drink, which is really more than just a drink... The store is about helping us learn about the myths, cultures, origins, traditions, and anecdotes of the whisky whys, hows, whos, wheres, whynots. If you find yourself liking (loving!!!) the stuff, maybe he can help direct you to figuring out the reasons. Or not! He can also just help you find more of what you like, in all its glorious versions and possibilities, and help you expand your taste inclinations. It all comes down to simply enjoying whisky. Take it from this *very* beginning rookie, who usually picks her potions based on how pretty the bottle shape and label packaging is... [insert sheepish grin]... Learning more about and really getting into the heart of the drink continues to be a grand little adventure. Burns knew what he was going on about :) ~dedicated to you, JC~

Die Bierothek just opened this week at Skyline Plaza and I couldn't be happier to have a craft beer…read moreshop within walking distance of my flat. (But really, so much for dropping some of this beer weight I've gained upon moving here). The shop is located in the main area of the first flow on the side of Best Worscht and Starbucks. Die Bierothek comes as part of the group of the shops that are opened around Germany (they currently have five other locations). They carry an insane amount of crafties from Germany but also some from Austria, The Netherlands, USA, and UK (perhaps amongst some others...) The prices are aligned with that of Naiv, but are slightly steeper than Kiosk 45 or ixi (or even Rewe). But having this place nearby is priceless for me and the craft beer community of Frankfurt. I am sure I will spend lots and lots and lots of money in here in the near future. They also have one tap available and a cold beer section. Hell yes. Definitely one to be visited by craft beer enthusiasts. They only accept cash.

I was trawling through facebook when I saw that skyline plaza had a new beer shop, I nearly got off…read morethe bus I was travelling on to work to go and see this for myself in person. I couldn't believe it another craft beer shop in Frankfurt? This was truly something to write home about. I called up my girlfriend mixing up my words unable to contain myself in excitement, we decided that this warranted a lunch break in skyline plaza to make sure the place is real and not a hoax (and get a burrito bowl while we are at it). After fidgeting my way through the first half of the day I sprinted to the train to head to skyline plaza and see if it really was a Christmas miracle happening on a muggy June day. It was a miracle this place ladies and gentleman is real! they have a fantastic array of craft beer to wet you taste buds with from IPAs, to barely wine, From Stouts to red ales this place has it all. The actual company is a chain all over Germany that has taken awhile to come to Frankfurt, but so has the craft beer revolution, this city is somewhat behind in that regards. the selection of beers is vast and really shows up the Naiv bottle shop. The place is priced around the same as other craft beer places (ixi, Kiosk 45) but slightly cheaper than Naiv. The staff are very friendly and willing to help you make a selection and there is a beer on tap that I believe is a free taster you can enjoy while you walk around. They will also be doing beer tasting session there and have a beer sommelier in house. So happy this place has opened up near where and shows craft beer is on the up here!
