Strange "park" that my folks took me to when I was visiting them in the high desert. I can see that this might be a good place to take a non-strenuous stroll and be contemplative. Sure drop in if you're passing through, I think one might be disappointed if you make this a destination spot. This "park" has been around since like the 60s. That alone is impressive. read more

One a recent trip out to the Palm Springs area this place came up on our list of site seeing things to do. As you can see from the pictures this park is a bunch of different type of Jesus statues. It's an ok way to kill time 30-45 minutes out here. Roadside attractions seem to be a dying thing so it's refreshing to see that there are some still out there. This is a quirky and quick thing to do while visiting the area. It's not very large so you can walk the whole ground in less than a half an hour, but it is really interesting to see. It's been open since the early 50s and the sculpture work is definitely very professional. They have a parking lot right next to it however, it is off-road and a bit bumpy so not suited for a lowered car. I would recommend for everyone to see it at least once. read more

It is a very interesting place, esp. if you know a bit of the life of Jesus Christ. This was our first time here, as we had an exhibit to attend in Yucca Valley in the evening. Stop by booth on your entrance, get a brochure and follow the Statue numbers (10 + Rock Chapel). With each statue number, there are usually a few more statues to supplement the main theme. Umm not really sure what to think of this place. It's a bunch of statues of Christ set up in a mini trail, with each statue numbered--set up sorta like a mini golf course, if that makes any sense. Ok, it doesn't. I guess just check it out if you're in the area and looking for a unique experience that involves some walking around. Plus it's dog friendly! Pico, our Frenchie, enjoyed sniffing his way around the grounds. I honestly enjoyed it the oddness of it all. The status are well done, in fairly decent shape, and well organized that gets you walking around and seeing everything at different angles. Unfortunately we went in the late afternoon, so it was pretty toasty and the lighting for pics was just aight. I'm sure at sunset it looks really cool. A unique experience and way to kill 45 mins. read more

This park was a nice walk. It's not a very long walk but it really feels like you are somewhere else in the world ... reminds you to ground yourself and take life slow. Very admirable of this artist. Felt safe, loved, and peaceful just being there. Def a stop to take while out in 29palms or going towards Joshua tree. read more

This park is interesting. After reading the yelp reviews, I had to come see it for myself. The park is large enough for a nice short stroll. It's true, Jesus is everywhere, in the form of white sculptures, throughout the park. There is a small chapel on the grounds. A quiet place to pray or meditate. There is also a nice sized amphitheater with bleachers. Not sure if they do, but they should hold plays or concerts there. It's perfect for it. Parking wise, you can drive up through the gates and up the dirt road, and park. Location wise, the park is across the street from either apartments or condos, and you can park on the street, too. There is actually a church right next door to the park. No restrooms available. The doors are painted shut. read more

This park is basically a religion shrine created by the sculptor Antone Martin. It is made up of sculptures of Jesus, Mary and his disciples. As it is a religious shrine it has to be viewed as such. To describe this park, it is a fairly small area geographically speaking, but the statues are spread across a fairly large area. It's important to keep in mind what you will actually encounter when you come here because I've known some people expected way more than what is available. As stated, there is a number of religious statues. Some of them are in very poor condition. The park apparently attempts to restore the statues as time goes along. But, not all of them are in pristine condition. There is also an outdoor stage at this park. This would be an ideal place for plays or perhaps small musical performances as there is quite a lot of bleacher seating available. There is also a very nice small chapel. This chapel is very well-maintained and would be a nice and quiet place for the religious person to sit down and pray or meditate. One of the things to be warned about at this park is there are a number of sticker bushes in association with some cacti. These sticker bushes can be quite painful and they will easily rip your clothing if you walk too closely to them So, keep your eyes open because it doesn't feel good when they stick into your leg. Getting to this park is fairly easy. It is located off of 29 Palms Highway and if you turn on your GPS you should have no problem finding it. Overall, as long as you don't go there with too many high expectations, this is a fun place to visit. read more

This place just boggles the mind. I mean, this is the life work of a man who clearly entered another plane of reality while living in the desert. These giant statues of Christ were all sculpted over many decades by Antone Martin, a self taught sculptor (you go, Sir!) to create another roadside attraction that would hopefully lure in some donations. He has sadly passed over but the conservative Assembly next door has conveniently taken over managing the grounds and soliciting the donations. Many of the sculptures need serious attention, what with missing limbs and the like. The sculptures are definitely odd. There is a frisky Christ, a sitting contemplative or two, traditional mansplaining Christ, some bald old bearded guy who may or may not represent Christ after he took Buddhist vows (or John?), and others who seem placed to maximize their socializing opportunities. It is rumored that a Mary resides there but I found nothing cis-gendered female enough to verify). These are rather rough hewn, folk sculptures. The hands are massive and fingers and faces variable. The energy that created them is decidedly old school male. The landscape is kept immaculate. There is a bathroom for public use. It may or may not be open. The park is free-though ample boxes, buckets and wishing wells exist to accept your shekels. If you donate, perhaps you should designate the funds are for repairing Mr. Martin's life's labor and NOT to the ongoing operations of the clearly well funded church which has adopted this project. If you appreciate desert oddities, or are a "true believer" seeking a quick fix, then this one is up your alley. read more

Quite an unexpected surprise. I've been to Joshua Tree a bunch of times but somehow this place flew under my radar until this place popped up on Yelp. I wasn't really sure what to expect but the scope and detail of the park was much more than expected for a free attraction. It seems like the park is run by the church next door and they also have a box for donations if you are so inclined. The park itself consists of large statues depicting various biblical scenes. The largest of the scenes shows the 12 disciples, and each statue is huge, like 8 or 9 feet tall. The park is at the bottom of a hill and there's a walking path that weaves around all of the art. While the park has natural flora and fauna befitting the environment, the entire park is kept very well maintained and manicured. It is very pleasant to walk around and stroll. If you're familiar with Biblical stories you'll appreciate the Biblical nature of the scenes, however even if you're not but you just appreciate art or unique attractions you will enjoy a visit here. Also, this park is just a short hop skip from the main road so it's easy to squeeze into any Jtree trip, the park itself isn't that large and the grounds are open so you can see everything fairly quickly if you just do a walk through. I also want to add that they have a porta potty here which was kept ridiculously clean. Like I think it was the cleanest porta potty I've ever used in my life. No smell at all. read more

What an amazing sight to see. We wanted a socially distancing day trip and we drove from North Hollywood our to visit. It was a nice drive and a great destination. Serene and beautiful. Inspirational. Remember bring water and sunscreen. It gets hot in the summer and there's not a lot of shade. There was a picnic table. Really neat little stop off of Pioneertown Road. These giant statues were moved here by the local church in 1951, which was documented by an issue of LIFE Magazine. I urge you to check that issue out before going. It will make you appreciate this that much more. Kids didn't quite understand this place. I am not Christian, but I loved it and appreciated the blood, sweat and tears that it took to do this as well as the passion behind it. Check it out, but not a whole lot else to do. There appeared to be a couple trails heading off into the Yucca rocks. read more

Some elderly self taught sculptor made 70 concrete sculptures of scenes from the bible. They are currently falling apart, and some are headless with rebarb comming out their sleves instead of arms. This is a really fun place to get drunk if you are 17. read more

Here's my toss at irreverent: Antone Martin had a passion for sculpture. He bore within his heart a deep faith in Jesus Christ, and although his artistic talent can in no way compare to that of Michaelangelo, he at least used his gifts to produce a work of art from the very depths of his soul. To ridicule an artist for his passion, his expression of his faith, and his legacy betrays hearts that are even more stone-cold than the white concrete structures that testify to a man's beliefs. There is a scene in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" in which R.P. McMurphy (played by Jack Nicholson) attempts in vain to pull a shower faucet from the floor of the bathhouse in an insane asylum. In spite of straining himself to the point where we think his blood vessels are about to burst in his head, he fails and slowly walks past his fellow patients who had been ridiculing him as they sit back, languishing in their sad, empty lives. He looks up at them and says, completely exhausted, "I tried. God damn it, at least I did that." Good for you, Mr. Martin. You god damned did something. -A fellow artist. read more

Heard about this location and came to check it out. As an art major, it was great seeing such great artwork from the 1950s that are a staple in the desert. It was neat seeing the lil wildlife of bunnies squirrels and different birds roaming thru as you walk thru the park. Will definitely pass the word along for more people to visit the park. read more

It's a park on a hill with a bunch of statues of Jesus, etc. What I learned from it is that if you do something with enough commitment, whether or not you are guided correctly or skilled, you will have created an enduring something that will be appreciated. Definitely worth checking this place out! I discovered this park last week during a weekend stay in Yucca Valley. A friend of mine wanted to have a bunch of people join him on a "random weekend getaway," so I did some research on the town before I agreed. Pros: Less than a mile off of the main road. Free! Very interesting story behind the display. Takes 1/2 hour or less. Outstanding views Yucca Valley, worth the detour for that alone. You can do a quick driving loop around the parking lot of the church and decide whether or not you want to get out. If not, you've only "wasted" five minutes. Cons: None, really. The only sad part is that some of the statues have fallen into a state of neglect. You can see the rebar sticking out in some minor places where there should be limbs. This is less of a traditional "park" and more like a "statue garden" in the desert surrounding an Evangelical Free Church. There is an informational kiosk with news articles detailing the history of the statues, as well as a public restroom. There is nothing "scary," "shady," "creepy," or "sketchy" about this place, as other reviews have suggested - at least not during the day, and why would you want to visit a statue garden at night? read more

Great observation point to view the entire town of Yucca Valley. Amazing sunset! Walked along the pathways in the hillside park getting great exercise among the native plants and wildlife. Enjoyed mid-century sculptures and then had a quiet lunch at the shaded picnic tables. My dog enjoyed the outing as well. read more

The crazy stuff you find in the desert always amazes me. Desert Christ Park is a collection of concrete statues and structures placed up on the hillside behind a church. The statues are a good 10 feet tall. Some are just standing, but others are acting out scenes from the bible. It was a very serene and spiritual place. Very cool. read more
