Stopped to eat here for an early dinner passing through Binghamton. We were very hungry after driving many hours. When entering Despina's we were greeted warmly. I had the rice pilaf bowl with chicken and it was delicious. My husband ordered the gyro and Greek salad which he said was "off the chain". Everything was fresh and full of flavor. It's Greek style food preparation restaurant. Falafel being Mediterrean falls in to this category and style and preparation varies with each restaurant. Instead of fried balls of mashed green lentil they bake these in form of patties. See photo I took. Additionally hot-sauces which are specialty of each location , they allow you to use Red Hot Sauce bottled from vendor! Tahini sauce was missing and vinaigrette based product I refused to add on it. Extremely Disappointed! In the past food has been handled with the utmost care and quality control. Made the mistake of ordering through Uber, Despinas attempt to contact me without sucess to advise of substitutions being needed. Despinas stated Uber stated to send the order with the Pita anyway even though I was not able to be reached. Thankfully I checked my food before eating and was able to avoid being contaminated. The food is good, but they must think Covid is a hoax, because the kid behind the counter wore his mask below his mouth until he gathered it bothered me and moved it below his nose. As he approached me with the takeout bag I said, "This food is for someone who's immune-compromised, so I'd appreciate it if the mask covered your face." Instead of covering his nose he told me the mask didn't fit right and then muttered "If that's the case, you shouldn't leave the house." I asked him what he meant. He said have a good day, adding "Beat it." I asked if that's how he talked to customers, as the manager looked on from the kitchen, where she probably didn't hear him. Later I called to talk to the manager and she screamed at me that "Nobody wears masks in Binghamton" and the kid hadn't told me to beat it, so "Get your ears cleaned out!" I let her know I wouldn't be going there again, which seemed okay with them. Moral: if Covid is fake, enjoy the cuisine. If you're concerned about it, find a meal somewhere else. read more

I ordered the gyro with a Greek salad. They gyro had good flavor but didn't have as much meat as i was expecting but did have a lot of lettuce and tziki sauce. The "baby" Greek salad was shredded ice berg lettuce with 3 olives, some cucumber slices, some tomato and a good portion on feta cheese and Greek dressing you added on the side. The salad was good but would have been better with more varieties of lettuce, more olives and more lemon in the dressing (I'm used to Greek dressing that is lemon, garlic, olive oil and oregano as the primary flavors). It also took over 30 minutes to get my food - long line where it took about 15 minutes before I could order and then 20 minutes or more for food to arrive which made it hard to get back in time. They had 3-4 staff and they needed about twice that many. read more

We used to love Despina's lamb gyros, but yesterday we both had mouthfuls we couldn't chew. It seemed like a new inferior grade of meat. We also felt our food was too oily. This is the most consistently perfect quality 'fast food' (order from counter, then your food is prepared fresh) I've ever had! I've been there about 10 times and the gyro has been perfect every single time! Somehow, their pita bread tastes like it was just made each time I get it! High prices ($12 - $13 for an incredible gyro & baby salad, no drink) were easier to pay when Despina's was on Hawley Street. That was a beautiful restaurant! Now they moved to Main St (nice clean place but smaller and more 'historical' interior) to a place that looks like it's about half the rent, but same high prices came with them. Place: I really like the cafe style they have going on at the place; it's very chic and laid-back, and the area is pretty clean and very spacious. Food: I ordered the Pita bread with chicken and luckily, the Greek Salad. The pita bread with chicken, in general, was ok. The bread was soft and the sauce was pretty tasty, but the chicken was kind of dry. That was a turn off since I don't like dry chicken, but the rest was pretty good. The Greek salad, on the other hand, was great! The greens were fresh, and I love the potato salad touch and the dressing was great. I would definitely order the salad again. Price: The prices were pretty decent. The taste and quantity they gave were in proportion to the prices. Service: the people here are really nice. I wasn't trying to get the Greek salad, but a small potato salad on the side because it comes with the the pita bread with chicken. This was my first time I checked into this place aside from all the times doordashing and the food always smelled so delicous...So this time I stopped by myself and I ordered the chix souvlaki and potato salad it was very tasty and they made everything in a good porportion so it fulfilled my hunger there is this delicious sauce that they put on the wrap it's just absolutely delicious and fresh the reason I chose the chicken was because I felt it was alittle more healthier than the lamb.. I think that is unacceptable considering what is going on in the world right now and Broome county was lucky enough to start reopening. Cool little Mediterranean spot in the middle of bighampton. Very light, airy and relaxed space that's great to stop by for a chilled lunch. The menu is pretty extensive and has a lot of Med staples like gyros, salads, falafel, hummus, babaganouj etc. all fairly priced with full meals coming in at $10-$15. My only complaint would be that service was quite slow. There was one guy responsible for taking orders and and serving, so things got a little backed up. Onto the food: Hummus - this was really tasty. Good, rich and garlicky flavor. Served with pita bread, which was slightly different from what I'm used to. Very fresh and doughy vs the usual toasted. Greek salad - yup, it was a Greek salad. Pretty hard t go wrong with this one, but let's not take that away from them. Lamb gyro - a good quality bit of Donner meat. Again, served in the doughy pita with a salad. Could have used a little mint yoghurt and hot sauce in my opinion, but juicy enough without. Falafel - interestingly these were baked and not fried, making them a healthier alternative. Still delicious. Recommend for an informal bite! read more

First and foremost, let me state upfront: This review is solely restricted to a meal I ate courtesy of one of the area's food delivery services. I readily concede the experience might be far superior when dining in. I certainly hope so, seeing the rave reviews here. I ordered a beef gyro, fries and a side of couscous. Let's start there, with the couscous. It was bland, which is a new one to me - I've *never* had bland couscous before. It also lacked any other ingredients besides couscous and a few herbs. Try adding some tomato, lemon or lime, and even diced cucumber, maybe? But I could have done that myself - the biggest sin to me was that this almost $3 side was served in a plastic ramekin that typically is used for salad dressing. Three bucks. For about 2 tablespoons. OK. Moving on. The gyro was interesting. The pita seemed thicker than usual and a bit too chewy. The taste wasn't bad, but it was pretty nondescript and basically just "salty." I've had better from area convenience stores. (Singh's on Clinton, I salute you.) The fries were adequate. Not fabulous but not bad. Unfortunately for me, they weren't hot but that's clearly a result of the delivery, and I won't hold that against the restaurant. It's sad, really, because I love Mediterranean cuisine and I surely would deeply love a great new place with reasonable price points. The service was excellent and the food...spectacular! Vegan options! So tasty! This is my favorite restaurant in Binghamton, I crave the hummus and pita whenever I'm back home. Everything Despina cooks/bakes tastes like its coated in gold (just kidding, I don't think gold tastes as good as her food does) Last time I was in the area, I stopped in to get a snack but ended up getting 2 cups of soup (lentil and lemon chicken orzo), falafel platter with tzatzki and 3 sides (Mac salad, grape leaves and quinoa lentil) I'm telling you, everything was amazing. I also got 3 cookies and slices of buttermilk pie. ended up eating past the point of regrets but it was worth every calorie. Aside from the food, the service is always warm and super helpful. Last time I came in, she offered me some Greek cookies that she had made, they literally gave me life, they were that good. The Tzatziki surprised me. Usually tzatziki is what "fails" a lot of places for me. But Despinas was fantastic. Id say it was a 9/10. I also got the chicken souvlaki pita and it was just okay. There wasn't much to it other than lettuce, feta, tomato, chicken and tzatziki. The chicken wasn't really marinated and lacked a lot of flavor for me. Really it's a 3.5 with potential for higher. I've only been once but it was an enjoyable experience. I ordered ahead for a lunch pick up and my order was on time and prepared correctly which downtown lunch places sometimes mess up! I had the falafel and it was pretty good. The pita was fresh, the tzatzki garlicky, and the falafel just the right texture. I think next time I want to try it with hummus and tzatzki. I preferred this falafel to one I've had at Bashas in Vestal. Pitas come with a side and I had the tabbouleh which had a nice vinegar hit but could've used more fresh herbs and veg. The place has a similar look to when it was Brewed Awakenings but that's ok, it's a nice space. I didn't realize they had breakfast too so that's a nice surprise. The lunch crowd was decent size and the cashier was a babe so those are pluses too. I'm curious to try the souvlaki so I'll probably be back! read more

Wow!!! The food was fantastic. The lamb in the gyro was expuisitely tender, succulent and flavorful. The pita was warm, soft and light. The combination of Tzatziki, onion, tomato and lettuce was perfectly proportioned to the meat and bread. Superior quality. The baby Greek salad was great, it had potato salad in it which was a new twist to me and it was delightful. You have to try the tabouli. I have tried almost, ALMOST restaurant/diner/deli here in Binghamton and Despina's is so great I had to let people know what they're missing out on. I am a semi-picky eater and I have yet to have something I don't love here. I try something new every visit (and yes it is hard not to order the same thing). If I had to suggest some things: hummus and pita, falafel/chicken pita sandwich with the potato salad on the side. I hate salad. However because Despina has not failed me yet, I decided to try one of their salads (3 bean spinach with chicken)... I still hate salad, except her salad. Don't know what she adds but her salads are life changing. The food is fresh and you can feel good about finishing the entire meal because it's good for you (: If you have a sweet tooth Despina has the BEST pie (pumpkin and buttermilk are my favorites. Lastly, aside from the heavenly food the service is always kind and attentive. Accepts credit cards with orders over $10 (or $5?) This is the best restaurant in Binghamton by far. I come on a regular basis and have never been disappointed. All of their dishes are cooked to perfection and they have a great location right in the heart of downtown Binghamton. I recommend everyone I know to come here and taste saying on the menu.
