Phil went out of his way to resolve this problem, which saved us the stress of either doing it ourselves or finding another lot. He gave us some great ideas that saved us money without sacrificing quality. The workmanship of Phil and subcontractors were super. They were easy to communicate with and very courteous. Given that, we agreed to a deposit of $250 for him to go ahead with a formal quote, per company policy. When the proposal came back, it was $45K, which is more than double what we had discussed. While I understand that quality work and materials are costly, I don't understand how his verbal estimates were so grossly inaccurate, especially when he said he's been working there for 18 years. While I understand the deposit was intended to cover his time in gathering the estimates, and that he "doesn't work for free," a large part of his job is properly estimating potential costs for potential clients, and he did not do that. We agreed to the $250 deposit based on incredibly inaccurate numbers, and when I requested our deposit back, we were denied (twice.) While I don't think it was his intention to be deceptive, we felt swindled out of $250. I was very disappointed that they weren't willing to refund us.

We purchased a "spec home" built by Detrie last fall. It has been an awful experience. After…read moretouring the house we declined it as an option because the stain color used was an unpleasant brown (medium orange). After we left the real estate agent CONTACTED US and stated the stain color was used by mistake and that the seller would have it refinished - at their expense. We decided to move forward ONLY after clarifying that the work would not be done by just covering over the original stain in any way. We literally said - "it's fine if you plan on doing that, but then it just isn't the house for us". Throughout the negotiation process we continued to clarify and be upfront about how the work would be done- each time we were re-assured by the selling agent that they knew we didn't want the work done that way & "it will be perfect". We moved from out of state & arrived for our final walk through right after everything was freshly redone. In the coming days after closing we started to notice runs & drips everywhere on the trim. The stain also seemed to form a dark film on top & the natural grain of the wood was pretty much gone. To make matters worse - someone from Detrie came in and changed some damaged trim boards and they are a totally different stain color. In the coming weeks we found out they basically just spray painted over everything - no sanding or removing of the old finish. The result is a blotchy uneven top film with numerous runs and drips - basically it looks like smoke damage over the medium orange stain color. To this day I'm so angry that we are here - we could not have been more upfront about what our expectations were. It's impossible to be an informed buyer if you are lied to to protect someone else's pocket book. It's been devastating to our transition here from out of state. We paid full price to be lied to and now we have to pay thousands of dollars in legal fees over - or tens of thousands of dollars to replace the damage they caused.

Brian stays current with styles, is truly creative, and has an eye for design, which I think most contractors lack. His work and attention to detail are truly exquisite. You hear so many nightmares from people about their renovation experience, but we had none of that. Brian coordinated every meeting with plumbers, electricians, etc, was incredibly reliable, stayed within budget, and stayed true to his word on timelines as well. We plan on doing a lot more work with him in the future.
