As mentioned, it looks fairly wee from the outside although it has a fair amount of outdoor seating for sunnier days but as you walk in you realise its like an oddly shaped tardis, walking past the bar it opens up quite far and the back of the building suddenly looks like it'd take several minutes to reach! The decor is all very fresh, pretty sure it's been recently decorated and the toilets are sprakly clean, always a plus point! Anyway. There was a group of 20 odd of us here for an 80th birthday and we were accomodated no problem, including the small demented human in a highchair at one end of the table, and my dad's partner who was in her wheelchair at the other end. Shortly after seating us all and unprompted, a small dish of freshly cooked veg appeared for my niece, along with some butter to mash through them which I thought was a nice touch. It kept her quiet anyway :P The food is a mixture of standard pub fare really, the portions are well thought out and the quality of the food is excellent. There wasn't a single complaint on either side of the table (rare indeed). My only niggle would be that the chips are of the bog standard frozen variety and to be honest, good chips aren't hard to do so there's no need for that. I think 4 of us had steak, all cooked differently (from blue right through to cremated) and they were all considered spot on. For me, they had medium rare down to a tee! We had 4 bottles of house wine on the table, 2 red (1 merlot and 1 shiraz) and 2 white (both Sauv Blanc), myself and my great uncle polished off the reds and I can tell you they were both very, very drinkable. Certainly too drinkable for a school night anyroads, ahem. The food is good value for money and prices are very reasonable although I am suspicious that this is do with the fact they're not well known outwith the local area. I was completely grossed out by the way the chicken looked. It was served in a soggy mess. It was not at all crispy and it was so mushy that it looks like O had soup in a bowl. I peeled the chicken from One wing and could not eat the rest because of how poorly they were cooked. If you are one of the only restaurants open near a major tourist attraction, you need to staff more appropriately for the anticipated number of guests. Also please take more pride in your food, this was the worst culinary experience I have had in Scotland. The one star is for the beer selection, they have a wide variety.

Stirling's resident Yelp expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of "I don't know what it's like during the day though." So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? An old pub, the main bar area is pretty cozy to say the least. About the size of a decent double bedroom. Despite this, I was assured by one of the welcoming regulars that they recently had 36 people in at one time. He did admit however that, "they all knew each other very well by the end of the evening". With an open fireplace in the room, I was also advised of the system adopted on a cold day where everyone periodically shuffles round clockwise to avoid some poor soul getting toasted by the flames. We enjoyed a chat with the landlord and regulars whilst sipping a few bottles of Caer Edin Dark from the aforementioned Kinneil Brew Hoose. The 5 star rating reflects the friendliness of all we met and the undoubted character of the place. I highly recommend a visit to this pub for everyone but the unfortunately claustrophobic.
