Dexterity Driving School is by far the best choice you can make when choosing a certified DC DMV instructor to prepare for your behind-the-wheel test. My experience with Jules Kontchou was incredible. I learned to drive with him from my very first steps to becoming fully comfortable on the road and prepared to pass my test within just a few weeks. There isn't a lot of clarity about the third-party road test so I thought I would provide some insight into my experience with Dexterity Driving. Overall, I was not impressed with the professionalism and service with Dexterity Driving School, and having met several of the other third-party driving instructors on the day of my test, would not recommend Dexterity Driving for a third party road test exam. Communication I received a receipt of payment and no other communication from Dexterity Driving. I signed up to take the test at 9 AM but at 9 AM the day of the test was told that my test was rescheduled for 1. Dexterity did send me a google calendar invitation two days before the exam but did not indicate that the time had been changed. They also reached out via text, and I confirmed "yes, good to go for tomorrow morning." If you are going to change the time of appointments, please do so via email or text directly-- not through google calendar for two days prior. I had no reason to believe that the test time had been changed. Drivers Test+Car The instructor gave me a lot of feedback during the exam that was not deductions on the scoresheet. He was very harsh in his feedback but I had no major loss of points. Nothing too tricky at all, except a challenging intersection at the very end of the test. They instruct you to turn right on red. The route can be found on Youtube. Just search DC Drivers Road Test. The car was an old Toyota Carolla with very sensitive gas. It cost $60 to rent for the test, which was an absolutely insane cost- but driving schools have cornered the market for people in DC without cars that need to take a road test. After I finished driving, the examiner asked me how long I had been driving, and other questions about my driving experience. He would not tell me if I passed or not. After going inside, the driving examiner forgot to tally all the points, and the DMV employee had to flag him down in order for him to actually complete the scoresheet correctly. After the Test When you schedule with the third-party road test, you do not need to make an extra DMV appointment. The DMV employees were so helpful and friendly. The cost of all driving schools for a third-party road test+car rental is about the same, but I wouldn't recommend Dexterity. It was very frustrating to have my appointment suddenly changed without notice, and the employees I interacted with were not super friendly. read more

So many 1/0 star reviews here. I think a lot of them might be fueled (a bit) by bitterness, so here's my two cents. I had no problems scheduling with this company. It was a wonderful option, because the DMV itself literally had no open slots for nearly three months. Crazy. I spent $160 on Dexterity ($100 for an asap test that I got scheduled within a week, and $60 for a rental car because mine doesn't have a center break). More money than I wanted to spend, but still cheaper than continuing to Uber everywhere for another three months. The guy I scheduled with seemed friendly. Then, the day right before the test, I got a call that they were having trouble with my info and I had to get in touch ASAP or I wouldn't be accepted. Sloppy on their end, and I started to think all the 0 star reviews here were true. Fortunately, that worst case scenario didn't pan out; everything got sorted, and they communicated with me well via phone messages and texts while that was happening. I took the test the next day as planned. I was verbally criticized a lot for insignificant things (apparently it's a sin to accelerate going down hill, even if you're keeping it under 25mph? Go figure) but ended up passing with just 5 points deducted (turning too fast once, which did happen). The test is set up so you can get -25 points and still pass by the way, if anyone was curious. I know I was wondering how it was scored before taking it. Most things take off between 2-5 points per instance, although serious stuff can take off 26 for the auto-fail. There was no parking, backing up, or anything technically challenging. Anyways. Other than some weird criticisms (that weren't reflected in my score) my examiner was really friendly and professional. He showed up early, and I was pleasantly surprised when I got to take my 11 am test around 10:30 am (I chronically show up early for things like this, and it was great not having to wait). The school also had a facilitator in the DMV who worked with their examiner and clients, and he also seemed like a decent and helpful person as best I can tell. The actual rental car handled rather poorly (and wasn't the Ford Focus they had said it would be either). It handled well enough for the purpose though, I guess. Besides, it's not really reasonable to expect a driving school to use great cars, given that student drivers probably do bad things to them on a regular basis. It was nice not having to go rent one myself, just from a laziness point of view. Worth the $60 for convenience, I say. My "real" rating is probably 3 stars. It wasn't a stellar experience or anything, but it wasn't at all the awful experience portrayed by many reviews here either. I was pleasantly surprised more than once. I'm going to toss in a bonus 4th star just to counteract the negative exaggerations (imo) of others. Can you find a better 3rd party testing company? Maybe. I have no clue. I imagine you could do worse though, and I'd feel "OK" recommending Dexterity to people who don't want to deal with waiting for an official DMV tester. * * * * * Edit: My biggest unsolicited advice for new drivers testing is that you should simply realize that much of the test is totally ridiculous, and go ahead and embrace that. Yes, you don't /really/ need to look in your mirrors every 10 seconds. And you don't /really/ need the emergency break engaged when parked on a flat surface. And there's nothing wrong with accelerating down hill as long as you watch your speed. But don't fight any of it. Pretend you're in a bad piece of community theater. If you can do that (and can avoid making any legitimately serious mistakes like almost hitting something or being in the wrong lane) I imagine you'll be ok. You can make a lot of small mistakes and still come in at -25 or less for the pass. read more

The first two times I used Dexterity Driving School to attempt to take my road test, my experience was very positive. Jules was very helpful and professional and showed me everything I needed to pass the test the second time I failed. I was very excited to take my test for a third (and hopefully final!) time this week, and so I booked Dexterity for a rental and home pickup for my test in the morning. It was rather unusual that I did not receive a Google Calendar invitation to confirm my appointment (though I did receive an email receipt for the $89). The next morning, for which my road test was scheduled at the DMV, I received no call from anyone at the school about my scheduled appointment with them, and nobody came to pick me up. I called them numerous times that morning but my scheduled appointment with the DMV came and went and so I gave up and decided to go in to work. I attempted to reach them several more times throughout the day and my calls were not returned. I wrote an email to the school requesting an immediate refund because of their no-show for my appointment, and was (pleasantly) surprised this morning to see a receipt in my email for the refund. However, aside from the receipt, I have still not received any communication from the school regarding my appointment and why anyone failed to contact me at all. I am also planning on asking the school to reimburse me for the $30 DMV fee that I will now have to pay for missing my road test, although I'm not holding my breath for that. As I said at the beginning, my first two experiences with the school were very positive but my experience with my last appointment has made me decide to avoid all business with Dexterity Driving School moving forward, and recommend that others do the same. Update: The school sent me a refund receipt (but I have not seen the actual refund in my account yet). However, still no communication whatsoever from them aside from the refund receipt. I have filed a consumer complaint against the school with both the DC Office of the Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau. read more

I decided to try this driving school, after finding a loving social deal. I will say it was super easy to redeem the voucher and book my driving session. The instructor did show up late but overall, the first lesson i had with this company went well. Gave me tips a previous driving school company never gave me and made me feel confident in my driving skills. The instructor said I was ready and encouraged me to schedule my road test with the dmv. So I did but also agreed to one last 2 hour session the day before the test. Friday we agreed that I'd be picked up from my job. On Friday I never heard from the man, after texting/calling he sends some odd message stating "something unusual happened he can't do my session" okay so I'm thinking well what about my test the next day. He stops replying to my text and the next morning he never shows up. I was left with the dmv cancellation fee and had to wait another month to take me test. Sketchy company. read more

I took their third party road test last Thursday. Because I saw too much 1 star review so I called them 2 days before I took the test. They changed my appointment from 2pm to 10am on the phone. Since I'm not a native speaker so I can't fully understand why they need to change the time but it's fine by me. On the day of road test, my instructor came earlier and so did I , so I started earlier. I think the instructor is a very nice man, and the service was very fast so I wasn't wait for anything. And the instructor gave orders very clear when I was testing, even if I'm not good at English I can clearly understand what to do. Hope all you guys can enjoy their services! I'd give it zero stars if I could. Be warned, this "driving school" is a total scam if you need it for just a road test in DC. Their own instructors leave Yelp reviews to boost their rating. I paid $160 and no, I am not just a disgruntled tester who failed her road test. I so happen to know a friend who coincidentally , unbeknownst to me at the time, took his road test the same day as me by the same instructor, Jules, who failed us both after telling us we were good drivers and wanted us to go back for a re-do that he would give us "half price" on, after wrongfully failing us for stupid made up reasons and lies. Its the perfect scam, had I not known this happened to my friend, I would have actually been gullible enough tot believe the bullshit reasons for me getting failed, (after having been driving for over a year). Staff at Dexterity actually began harassing me after I posted this Yelp review, and calling my phone to threaten and intimidate me into taking down my review. (which is absolutely against Yelp rules and is completely unprofessional) I ended up having to block them from my number because the harassment would not end for hours and his bullshit staff yelling at ME as if I was the one who scammed THEM! They are crazy. Jean, the shitty manager, after scamming my friend when he went for a re-do, actually admitted to my friend to scamming people and laughing at them after failing them for bullshit made up reasons f with their literal partners in crime, which are the pother driving schools listed under the DMV website is you are in a time crunch to get your license and cannot wait on the DMVs road test schedule, and BEGGED my friend not to say anything to anyone. Don't use this driving school for your road test, if you do not want to get scammed, just wait for the regular DMV people to road test you. Jules, one of the scammer instructors fed us the same lines on our individual road tests, like a script and had the audacity to laugh when we called him out on his bullshit scam the next time we went for a real road test with the DMV and crossed paths again, unfortunately. If I could give 0 stars, I definitely would. This is an extremely unprofessional driving school. On the appointment that I had already been asked to reschedule 4 times, the instructor calls me 7 minutes before my appointment and says he's going to be 20 minutes late. When he doesn't show up 45 minutes later, I call him and cancel my trip. Im going to call the office tomorrow morning to demand a refund. Before that, an appointment has been cancelled on me less than 30 minutes before the time it was scheduled be. Overall- it's just been a horrible and unprofessional experience, and the quality of the cars are dangerously bad. read more

This company has been recommended to me by a friend and I had a fantastic experience, from the pickup to the drop. I have appreciate the patience of my instructor - I wasn't easy for me since I was starting driving past 35 year of age - I have appreciate the communication. After I fail my first road test (I was too stressed and could not paid attention to the road sign) they continue to encourage me and help build self-confidence on the road. I took the road test two weeks after and pass. One of my instructor even help me get a second hand car that I am driving for almost three years already. I bought a Groupon for a 2 hour driving lesson and I had pretty good experience here. The instructor called about 30 minutes ahead of time and arrived 10 minutes before our scheduled time. I started the 2 hour with zero driving experience to driving on the street. During the session, we first went to a parking lot where I learned the basics, making turns, and slowing down. We then proceed to drive on the actual road and we practiced turns at a block until I became more fluent. My instructor, Franklin, helped me with the wheel and the brakes whenever necessary. The reason why it is a four star is because the driving school's appointment system is not that great. Currently if you have a groupon, you will not be able to make an appointment online. You would have to call to make an appointment. When you call the number, the agent is actually not from the driving school. After they take down your information, they will communicate with the people from the driving school to make the appointment. read more

Amazing. I had a lot of fun learning to drive with Louis , and then Jean ( for my final prep and exam ). I got my license , and I really liked what Jean told me before I took the test. "We do not have next week or next month to pass the test, we have today." I keep remarking that I was OK if I failed the first time , but I passed the first time ! Now lets look at all of these complaints , YOU HAVE TO TAKE LESSONS BEFORE TAKING THE TEST. YOU HAVE TO TAKE LESSONS TAKE LESSONS I don't care if that gets my review filtered our not , but I invested a solid 450$+ into lessons so I could learn to drive and pass . If you just pay them to take the road test your going to fail, the test is easy(just signal...). I don't know how it's the schools fault no one wants to invest any time and effort. WORST DRIVING SCHOOL IN DC/MY INSTRUCTOR PEED HIMSELF?/DON'T BE POLITE TO STRANGERS I made a yelp account just to write this review. 1. I scheduled a lesson time days in advance and was notified through email 3 different times that the lesson time was changed, and the instructor was still a no-show. 2. After rescheduling for the next day, the instructor shows up late and is unprepared. He doesn't know his way around DC, and drives us 40 minutes to Maryland to use a school parking lot??? So a lesson scheduled from 2-4pm lasted until 6pm. Additionally, his driving was terrible as he kept missing turns and cutting people off. People would drive by looking in expecting to see a teenager at the wheel panicking, not a grown man driving and a girl in the passenger see shrugging apologetically to people. 3. My second lesson was scheduled by my instructor through a text at 9pm the next day, saying he'd pick me up in the morning. Unprofessional and it was unclear if I could cancel due to their policy. 4. Second lesson he is again unprepared. After driving us 30 minutes out of the way and making me use my phone to navigate, we end up at the parking lot again repeating the same things as the last lesson which was unconstructive. He knows I've had experience driving on my permit, but without access to a car, I wanted to go over specific things like parallel parking and Highway driving. But no, he'd rather drive around an empty parking lot using my signals. OKAY BUCKLE UP KIDDOS BECAUSE HERE'S THE GOOD PART. 5. He gets out of the car and I notice a dark mark on his seat, but I thought perhaps it was a stain I didn't notice beforehand. But when he makes us pull over for gas (the car was near empty when he arrived), he stands up and I notice his groin region is soaked. Fine whatever, I don't know what's wrong with him, and I'm driving so it doesn't affect me. BUT THEN HE MAKES ME TAKE HIS SEAT AS HE DRIVES US HOME. Yes I could have said no and sat in the back, but I felt the need to be polite, and didn't want confrontation over something so awkward. 5. So after a good cry in the shower, I called the school to complain. They tell me they're busy and to call back. Cool cool. 6. I finally reach whoever is in charge and recite these points exactly. I'm completely calm as I list my concerns, but he shows almost no interest or care in my experience, so I amp it up a little to express to him that this needs fixing. You know, get the people going. Anyway, they seem to deal with a lot of complaints looking at these other reviews... 7. After a few minutes and some back and forth arguing and me threatening to cancel the charge on my card, the guy says he'll refund everything. I guess they don't have much confidence in their instructors to not defend them. 8. Anyway, with 6 hours of my life gone, $200 spent, and someone else's pee on me, you would have thought I had a pretty crazy night out. Then they sent me an email (in all caps) telling me that certain appointments on certain days were being changed (they never told me my original day was changed so I didn't know it applied to me). The email was in incredibly poor English and I thought it was a spam message. Then I called and the employee was rude and told me the system wasn't working and she would call me back in 20 minutes (she didnt'). They moved my appointment back 2 weeks even though I paid for the expedited one. read more

The third party driving test is a rip off. As a former ex-pat, I have driven in many countries including Germany and England. I am a competent and safe driver. I had to take the test because I no longer held a US driver's license. We were barely 5 minutes into the test when I was told to pull over because I had failed. The reasons were beyond nitpicky, and I did not make any moving violations. I was told that I did not stop before the white line before the crosswalk at a four way stop. I did stop where I was supposed to. I was also told that I had gone above the speed limit, which I did not. Also the customer service is weak. When I signed up online, I called to ask some questions about the test. The receptionist kept cutting me off to 'take my information' which she did not need because I had already completed the online sign up. I was told that we would not have to go into the DMV, and that is the first thing we did when I got there. I was told the DMV did not need to be present and if I passed the test I would be given a certificate so that I could get my license. We had a DMV official in the car! Also after not answering my questions correctly, I was sent a verification email with the wrong time for the driving test. I sent a reply email noting the discrepancy and never received a reply. When I arrived at the test, I called the receptionist to let her know I had arrived. She then proceeded to claim, falsely, that she had been trying to call me. This was a lie. I had no voice mail and no missed calls. After the 'failed' test I called the office to let them know I was unhappy and wanted to speak with management. I was told I would get a call back in 1/2 hour. I never received a call back. DO NOT use this service. It is an obvious rip-off to get drivers to take the test multiple times before they pay. I'm 25 and a very timid driver. I am on a deadline to get my license for work, and Dexterity was super accommodating in helping me find lessons/instructors quickly. For my first lesson I drove with Lawrence, and for my second I drove with Idriss. Both drivers were extremely friendly, patient, and most importantly for me, CALM. They both praised me when I did something well, and calmly pointed out to me points of improvement when necessary. Idriss in particular took me the route of the road test and then wrote down the particular areas to improve upon, and then we circled practicing those things multiple times. I am going to take one or two more lessons before taking my road test, but I am so much more confident behind the wheel now! P.S.: Today I called to try and schedule a third party road test. Although they were booked almost through august, the receptionist was kind and referred me to another third party driving school who was able to get me in earlier. Terrible customer service and online booking service. I scheduled an appointment for 9 AM on a Wednesday morning, with ample time to complete my road test and make it to work ON TIME. Upon arriving at the Brentwood Test Center, I had to contact the driving school; I was never called by the driving instructor nor someone at the school. Note: I arrived 15 minutes (actually more) before my scheduled drive time. A representative answered the phone and told me that my appointment was for 10. I checked my confirmation page, as did she, and then she proceeded to tell me that, "Well, the DMV doesn't allow tests to begin until 10 AM on Wednesday's. They changed the time. Meet your driver at 9:45 AM." Fine; I obliged. I sat around until 9:45 AM, which is when I went to the entrance of the testing center. I still hadn't received a call from the driver, so I called the school again. The same representative answered and she informed me that the driving instructor was there and that she'd call him. The driver then came to the entrance, with another customer. He proceeded to tell me that, "the car is in use and I'll have to get you when I get back", despite the fact that MY appointment was for 10 AM. I explained to the driving instructor that the reason for making an early appointment was so that I could complete the test and then go to work. Even still, his solution was for me to wait until he returned to complete my test. So, here I am, outside of the DMV Testing Center -- one hour and 30 minutes past my actual appointment time -- waiting for my Dexterity driving instructor, and extremely late to work. 1. The solution offered was unacceptable and showed poor customer service. 2. If the DMV in fact doesn't allow for tests to start before 10 AM on Wednesday's then: a) I shouldn't have been able to book online for that time, and b) the school should have contacted me prior to my appointment to let me know this information and offer a new time that would've been convenient for both myself and the school, and fell within the scheduling times allowed by the DMV. All around terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend this school until they've worked out a few kinks. Oh, and they don't mind taking your money when you schedule, but don't bother to follow up to make sure all things are set for the appointment. Nice. Not. read more

On Tuesday March 27th I booked a rush appointment with a use of their car for $160 for 3pm on Thursday. After taking the day off from work I ending up waiting over an hour for Jean who never showed up for my appointment. I called 10 min before the appointment to their office a few times and they didn't pick up. I had other instructors calling them and they still didn't pick up. I had to ask a stranger for Jeans number and after 20 calls he finally texted me (can I call you later) so I kept calling and he wouldn't answer then he texted me saying he would be there soon. While waiting the receptionist called me back and had no Idea what was going on and couldn't get a hold of Jean either. At 3:45 when the DMV closed he then called to asked if I could re-book the appointment... I said I would if he gave me a discount of minus $80 (60 for car use and minus 20 for expedited service(what a joke) When they refund me I will give them a better review for at least having some customer service. read more

A total scam!! The instructor was rude and unprofessional. As soon as I got to the DMV in Rhode Island, he only interest was in payment and seemed disappointed that I had a license in NYC previously. He joked with a buddy about passing people on the first attempt. I was told to wait for my number to be called, but then the Dexterity instructor disappeared into the back and returned saying it was my turn and there was a woman from the DMV joining us. One of the other woman behind the desk also left and she turned up in her car facing the Dexterity car I was to drive. The instructor told me to get into the car and start the engine. I got into the car and started adjusting the seat and mirrors to my height and view, put on the seat belt then switched on the engine. He seemed disturbed and said I told you to turn the engine on (I would have failed instantly if I had). Then the DMV person who was in her car was stopped in the middle of the parking lot facing the car I was in. He told me to move when I secured my way. I waited for her, indicated to her that she could go ahead and I would wait and she refused to move (parked in the middle of the parking close to the parking spot I would come out of). I signaled waited and she didn't move. I started to come out and he pulled on the emergency break and told me I was a dangerous driver because I had not seen the car in front of me. I told him I had and that I had signaled for her. He said you are dangerous, you have to reschedule, I can t let you go today. A complete scam. He was rude, unprofessional, and clearly more interested in rescheduling then testing me. I never left my parking spot. I have been driving for 20 years and never gotten a parking ticket. I was not comfortable with a private company testing me, but it is DC DMV certified. In fact. the head of the NE DMV called and recommended them! They are using this certification to push customers around. This can't last long, people aren't going to pay $140 to Dexterity for repeated road tests (especially when they are conducted in this manner). People can fail tests, but this was a total setup!! Shame on Dexterity and the DMV should do better. I paid to use a Dexterity car to make sure it was secure and qualified for the road test and yet the instructor made me test the brakes and the signals while I was parked to see if the car was safe?!?! Although the fee is a little on the pricy side, the staff of Dexterity is extremely helpful and accommodating. Dexterity provides a number of driving instruction packages and also has cars available for use. Also, considering the back up at the DMV, Dexterity is a great option for a driving road test sooner rather than later. read more

I would give them 0 stars if possible. I have never come across a more disorganized or dishonest company. WARNING: If you have a road test appointment scheduled, CALL THEM 3-5 days ahead otherwise they will claim that you are not in their system. EVEN if you have literal receipts. Horrible Horrible Horrible !!! I two classes with them 3 times and for the most of the time they spent talking then driving. Aside from that I decided to pay for the car rental service I had scheduled my appointment with the DMV for the Road test at 3pm. I got to the DMV 2:30 called the number I was given by the Dexerity Receptionist the man stated okay I'll be there once I had called him. I sat at the DMV till 3:05 decided to call the school again to see what was going on. Instead of helping me the young lady Sam rushed me off the phone stated she was very busy and it would be better if I could email her because she got busy during the day to take more calls. How could I wait when I clearly had an appointment and I was waiting. Finally "the manager Jean" called apparently they forgot about my appointment or car could barely understand him. He was actually at the DMV looking and asking people around if they could use a car to allow me to use. At this point I was livid, upset and in utter shock. It was 3:19 when I got the counter of the DMV because they finally got a car I could use but the DMV lady was upset stating they stop taking road test at 3:15pm. (Jan 2018) I chose Dexterity for a two hr behind the wheel driving lesson. At this point, I'd only had two hours of driving experience, ever (used a previous school) and I needed more hours. The school I went with previously was booked up (I needed to get my drivers license ASAP; learners permit was expiring the following week). So I booked a two hour appointment online and got an confirmation e-mail. About an hour later I got an e-mail of a change in my appointment time (changed to half hour earlier than previous time), cool, no problem. About two days later I texted my instructor to ensure that we were on one accord in regard to my lesson scheduled in two days, and we confirmed my pickup location. He was very prompt in replying. The day of my session I drove with Mr Escobar. He was an excellent instructor!!! He was punctual, very honest, reassuring, nice, patient and knowledgeable. We went through the road test route, and the streets surrounding. He gave me good tips, and I felt confident in taking the road test at this point. This company is friendly enough, but not professional. One issue is their flawed system for reserving and organizing services. The website does not allow one to select the length of time they themselves recommend, leading to a lot of confusion. Reservations are made or changed, whether on the phone or on line, instructors text/show up at the wrong time. One time an instructor showed up for an appointment that I had cancelled. I signed up for the (automatic transmission) road test car usage, which Dexterity recommended since we have a manual transmission. I only needed it for two hours, since we live 15 minutes from the DMV. When I called the office to change the time and make sure the details were set, the woman seemed unable to comprehend what I wanted, and wanted to pick up an hour too early. They then abandoned my daughter at the DMV with no way to get home. Calling them is no help. No one answers, and the voicemail box is full. The instructor who disappeared and left her at the DMV (with no way home) did not respond to texts and says he "just works for the company." For $175.00, I could have rented a car for the weekend from Hertz and driven her myself, since I had to drive to the DMV anyway as it turned out. read more

My daughter failed her first driving test with a DC examiner, so we decided to use Dexterity rather than wait 3 months to get another appointment with DC. We also paid to use one of their cars. I was a little concerned about some of the negative reviews on Yelp but we didn't have a lot of options. But I am glad we did use them because we were very impressed with every aspect of their service. After I signed her up online, we received an email confirmation and receipt. We arrived at the DMV about 15 minutes early this morning and our examiner from Dexterity was already waiting for us. The car had been backed into the parking space so it was very easy for her to exit the parking space. My daughter said the car was clean and very easy to drive. The examiner was very quiet and serious, but that seems appropriate since he was testing her. She said he gave her plenty of warning about where to turn and did not try and "trick" her at all.
