Our two hour trail ride with Diamond Hitch was one of the highlights of our trip. Roberta was efficient in getting everyone saddled, she was entertaining, informative and encouraging to our nervous rider. Derrick did a great job leading the ride through beautiful scenery where we spotted quite a bit of wildlife. Roberta was so helpful and even gave our daughters horseshoes for being brave when they were nervous on a steep slope. My family and I went on a vacation to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and my brother called Diamond Hitch to inquire about pricing and whatnot. They gave us all the information we needed and we scheduled our ride for the next day. It was not hard to find the stables and they had a TON of horses for all shapes and sizes. Our tour guide, Jim, was amazing. I highly recommend making a stop here if you're in town. On our trail ride (we did the 8:30am ride) we saw some deer, a kitty cat, and we walked along a trail with beautiful scenery. My 4 year old son rode with me and he kept saying how much fun he was having. They are also great with little kids who may be a bit nervous to ride. They consoled a few kiddos with ease and they got everyone on board for the ride. Whether you've never ridden a horse or you have a few rides under your belt, they make it fun and easy! Our family visited the stables today thinking that the kids would want to back out. Thankfully, when the kids saw the horses, they were all for it. We lucked out by getting the 11am ride. We were looking more for a 30 minute or hour ride, but we signed up for the hour and a half ride crossing our fingers that the kids could last that long (they are three and five). We were quickly signed in and the kids were fitted for their helmets. We were taught the basics of riding and we were off. The guides were both wonderful and the ride was slow but perfect for our little ones. The area is so beautiful, so that's a definite plus. Our guides were both kind and entertaining. Very knowledgeable staff and great, well cared for horses. The guides spoke very highly of the owners, and that is a huge plus for me. Every one of the few times a year that we're in beautiful Pagosa Springs, we pass this place on the road and always say, "We've got to try them sometime." Well, this time, we did, and I rank the experience as my favorite thing to do in Pagosa Springs ever, and at the top of the list of my other outdoor favorite activities. The property is easily accessible on Piedra Road just 15 minutes or so from downtown. It is gorgeous, with green, well-kept paddocks for this outfit's 100+ horses and various old country containers (bathtubs, old wagons) scattered about, teeming with vibrantly colored flowers in full bloom. The lushly forested hills of the San Juan National Forest are its backdrop, beckoning for a sunny morning trail ride. We were greeted by three friendly cowboys, one of whom, Tim, explained the costs, picked out a suitable length of ride and horses for my two girls and myself, and quickly taught us the basics of handling our horses. We had to sign agreements that indemnified them of just about everything that could possibly go wrong. This is normal, as horseback riding is inherently not without risk, but don't let that deter you. Helmets are recommended but not required, and I chose to have all of us wear them. I was glad later because some of the vegetation on the trail reached out just enough to brush our heads, and the helmets provided protection from the branches (you can also duck). He brought out three sound, older horses in full tack for us to ride: Copper, Shoestring, and Rosetta. They were very well Western broke, meaning, among other things, that they stood quietly and did not move away when being mounted, and they start out at a slow gait, speeding up only when prompted. Their horses are professionally wrangled and gentle. Even though it felt a little overwhelming at first to us because we had never ridden before, Tim's few instructions for us were clear, firm, and easy to grasp. When I made an error and pulled back on the reins - without releasing - to make Rosetta halt, he quickly corrected me and told me to release the pressure for a halt because maintaining it would cause the horse to back up. Our guide for the day, Norm, assisted us in mounting the horses. The process was made easier by a step-accessible, raised platform constructed just for the convenience of city folk. My girls (ages 8 and 14) and I were led to the trailhead, very nervous and a little excited. Then we were off. Norm rode in front, leading us along a lushly vegetated single-track trail, very muddy in some parts from the recent heavy rains, for the next hour. Most of it was shaded, and some parts were in full sun through small meadows with wildflowers in bloom. My youngest daughter's horse kept stopping to munch on grasses, and despite Norm's kindly instructions to her to rein in the horse (else we'd be sitting on horses for an hour instead of riding on them), she was unable to do so. No problem; he just turned his horse around and tethered it with a rope to his own so that my daughter's wouldn't be inclined to stop every few feet, and so we could all enjoy a leisurely ride. Due to our inexperience, at no point did our horses go faster than a walk. Once or twice, I got my horse to trot lightly (as when I crossed a road), which was exciting and fun! At no point were we in any danger, and we were having fun from the minute we started until after it was over. I think the key to a great ride - besides a great horse - is a great guide, and we got that in spades with Norm, a former rodeo bull-rider and professional horse wrangler who had been riding since the age of 10. He answered every question I had about riding horses, explained cold bloods and warmbloods to me (types of horse breeds and their behaviors), made it fun for the girls, regaled us with entertaining stories about his riding and the various horses we were on, and was just a really decent, good person for a family to spend time with. This place, its people, and their horses aren't just providing entertainment. They happen to be offering a therapeutic public service, in my humble opinion - the ideal antidote to today's nonstop, chaotic, stressful lifestyles that most of us lead, unfortunately, as we zoom around in our cars and remain glued to the various devices of a techno-world. Riding a horse in a quiet forest, adjusting to the rhythm of a majestic animal (which, despite a seated position, uses every muscle of the core and makes it an effective exercise to boot) and the serene atmosphere of nature, and doing so in the company of loved ones, is some of the happiest I've ever been. read more

The ride was ok for beginners but a very "nose to tail" trail ride with no chance to really explore. Trail was not very scenic and was mostly in back yards and near roads. The horses were good and well cared for, and the guides were nice and funny. We were booked for an inexpensive 1 hour ride but we're "upsold" to an hour and a half without really asking for the extra cost because we were told it was a much prettier ride. When we settled up at the end, it was an extra $20 per person for the extra 30 minutes, and I don't think there was any extra scenery or better view that made it worthwhile. Plan to tip the guides, they made it enjoyable. The upsell and very rigid nose to tail ride are the reason for my 2 star review. Pick a different place for a better experience. read more

I can't say enough about this amazing place! I'm from Texas and we ride horse lot. But my little girl and my teenage son had never rode. So while we were vacationing in Pagosa we figured I'd give them a try. Not only did Tim welcome us like friends but Chloe the other wrangler was amazing has she lead the group. She tied my little girls horse to hers and treated her with a kind heart and was very patient with her many questions and stories. We really enjoyed our 1 1/2 hr trip and show some beautiful land. Horses are well taken care of and great with all types of riders. If you are in the area and have horseback riding on your list... LOOK NO FURTHER!!! Horses were well behaved, and the trail was great. Although the guide, Jim, was a complete fool. Besides him being rude to everyone that was there, he wouldn't shut his mouth. It was hard to enjoy the ride when he was constantly running his trap. I normally do not care to write reviews, but I feel that everyone needs to know this before they head up there. He was out of line, and he mistreats the horses. I felt sick to my stomach half way through when I saw him slap my fiancé's horse on its face. All in all, the ride was nice, but Jim ruined the whole experience for me. read more

We had a party of 6 from ages 5-64, and our guide's names were Dina and Mia. They were excellent in assisting the young beginners in our 1 ride, which included beautiful scenery, and some moderately steep inclines and declines. They had a great sense of humor and were a lot of fun. We had excellent horses that were well trained, and stayed with each other with the correct guidance, offered by our guides. They kept a good eye on the party and made sure everyone was safe and the horses were doing what they were supposed to. We were so pleased with Diamond Hitch Stables. The folks at Majestic Outfitters canceled on us at the time we were to start our horseback ride, but when we called to Diamond Hitch, there had a ride heading out one hour after we called so we headed to the stables straight away. When we got at the stables, everyone was so accommodating. The wranglers who led the trip was funny and was great with our kids. We had 4 kids ranging from age 5-10 and they all had a wonderful time.
