Ambrose Home Builders - The top corner of this wall had been spackled, but never painted.

We hired Pete, owner of Ambrose Home Builders (AHB), as a general contractor to repair two split…read morewater pipes that had frozen in our vacation home near Fairplay, CO in January 2024. It was a very straightforward project: remove some damaged drywall, fix the pipes, install new drywall, then spackle and paint so that the new drywall matched the rest of the wall. What could go wrong? Pete was a neighbor of ours and he'd done work on our home in the past. Besides, State Farm was also involved, as this would be paid as part of an insurance claim, the first and only one we've made since we built the home 20 years ago. It took Pete and his team 4 months to do the work, and then just before Memorial Day weekend, Pete told us he was done. We drove up to check on the house and see the outcome of the project, and what we found was a mess. Project materials were strewn all over the house, paint trays and brushes were left in the sinks, furniture was stacked in other rooms, and there was a thick coating of drywall dust on EVERYTHING in the house. It took us the entire weekend to get the house back to a normal state, and we found an 18-inch gash on the kitchen floor, which could only have been caused by someone being completely careless in our home. We documented everything and asked AHB to credit us for the parts of the project that they had not completed. That's when the situation got even worse, as Pete's wife (who does the billing for their business, but had not been very involved on our project) began demanding that we send them full payment on the project. When I logically explained that we would only pay for work that they had done, she said that WE had "chosen to finish the project by ourselves" so "that was on us" and therefore we still owed AHB for the clean up. Yes! She actually demanded that we pay them $150 per hour for work that they had not even done! At that point, I thought I'd entered 'The Twilight Zone!' Finally they agreed to credit us for the work that we had finished for them, but we still overpaid for what I believe was a low-quality job. Based on all that happened, we cannot recommend AHB's services to others in the area. If THIS is the kind of project they perform for someone who has been their neighbor for 20 years? I shudder to think what they might do on a project for a stranger!

He likes to take vacations. He even told us he got fired from a job for taking too many vacations. that should have been our first clue. Frozen pipes, smoke alarms that didn't work, framing for doors was done incorrectly. We had to cut down our new doors to fit the frames. Opening and closing windows is a challenge. When problems would come up, he would say he didn't do it, his sub-contractors were responsible. We tried contacting them but no one would respond. The sub-contractors were to be over-seen by Pete Ambrose to make sure the job was done correctly. We feel Pete Ambrose didn't work for our best interests even though we paid him timely to do so. Now that he has been paid in full, he doesn't have time to take care of the problems we are dealing with. We would not recommend Pete Ambrose. If you would like to see our addition, we are more than willing to show you pictures of the project or talk to you about it.
