Like so many before me, I managed to drop my iPhone several times before the screen ultimately smashed. It was of course, only a matter of time before this was inevitably going to happen... but did I think to take out insurance to protect myself in this eventuality? Well, yes I did... But whether I got round to actually doing it is an entirely different matter! So, with the exorbitant cost of getting Apple to fix it for me, I began a quest that lasted well over a month to find a indie mobile phone shop like Sim Tech World that would do it cheaper. It ultimately cost a staggering £80.00 to get the screen replaced, but I had, in the meantime, damaged the LCD screen, making the job more expensive, (well, it was actually my neighbours cat jumping directly onto the broken screen in an attempt to catch a moth that put paid to the LCD screen in reality...) I didn't end up using Sim Tech World, but it certainly made me aware of their existence. They are seemingly a tight little business, that specialises in mobiles and home computing, including PC and Apple laptops, games consoles etc, as well as digital cameras; essentially all of your portable electronics that you can bring into the shop for attention, (thy don't do home visits). They also call themselves an 'entertainment exchange', which, as the name suggests, means that they sell second user kit as well.

I originally took my iPhone in for a screen repair after dropping it. Despite the damage, the phone was still fully functional -- I could make calls, use apps, and had no issues with the device's internal components. Within 10 minutes of collecting the phone from Simtek World, the camera stopped working and I had to return immediately because the repair had not been completed properly. The phone had to be completely restarted in the shop just proving that there had been damage to the logic board during repair. I am an engineering student at Cardiff University and have knowledge of electrical components for reference, this was not just a "software glitch" that the manager had suggested. Just a few days later, the phone failed entirely while I was away from home as a university student, leaving me without any means of communication. After exhausting all standard recovery methods, I took the device to Apple. I was informed that the logic board had been damaged and that the screen fitted during the repair was not a genuine part. Apple also showed me evidence of poor workmanship, including fingerprints and debris left inside the phone. What began as a simple screen replacement turned into an expensive nightmare. I have now had to pay for a replacement logic board and a new screen because of the condition in which my phone was returned. The cost, inconvenience and stress this caused were completely unacceptable. The quality of the repair was shockingly poor, and the fact that the phone developed serious faults almost immediately after leaving the shop speaks for itself. I trusted Simtek World with a fully functioning phone and received back a device that progressively failed until it became unusable. Without doubt one of the worst customer service and repair experiences I have ever had. I would not recommend this business to anyone. As a student in Cardiff and after also being told that the parts were authentic I feel led on by the manager (Kal) of the shop. He reassured me of this and Apple have explained that the screen was entirely fake. As a student these are costs I just couldn't afford. This company have abysmal customer service and do not have anyone's best interests at heart. The manager has also not even given me the good grace to reply to my message regarding the issue with the phone! I will be putting a message on overhead Cardiff to ensure that people stay away.
