Best Indian restaurant in the area. Slightly grumpy service on occasion, but food makes up for it.

Darjeeling boasts a good reputation and rightly so. We went on a lunch time, for a a brilliant deal…read moreof £5pp for 2 courses. The food is fresh and delicious and the service was second to none. I have heard that a booking is essential for Friday/Saturday nights. The decor is 'modern' and I think it has recently been refurbished. Parking is over the road or at the public car park a couple of minutes walk away. A strange place for an Indian in a lot of respects, but it works well....so that's what matters!

Came a couple of years ago food was nice but service was rude so didn't come again till yesterday…read more The staff was throwing out plates at the table and were very rude. My chicken pakora when cut was a perfect rectangle and tasted like frozen chicken nuggets. One of the curries from our group of seven literally tasted like tomato ketchup. My brothers vegetarian dishes were the only decent diahes which is a stretch saying so. In addition his dish was competely forgotten and then was "cooked" in 2 minutes which im assuming was microwaved. My biriani tasted like the regular rice and not close any decent buriani i have ever had before. Our whole group agreed that the aesthetic of the restaurant was very ugly and the service was very rude and seemed not to care. We left moat of our food and just ate out of hunger. Plus the worker who was not the boss was cleaning his nose and coughing on his sleeves which is unsanitary. Someone please open an Indian restaurant here you would take all the business. If you know a think about Indian/Bangladeshi food you know this is not it. Having been o both countries and lived in the Indian sub continent for 6 years is my experience with curry. And you can get great curries in Edinburgh or really any other restaurant. We have come for several years andnthw quality was always OK at best 3 starts but the service has slipped and would recommend to stay away.

There are quite a few curry houses higher on my list to visit than the Balaka…read more Basically I went with my partner on New Years Day, you know what its like, hungover to hell and needing some good food to fill your tummy, its the back of 7, nowheres open and youve nothing in to cook! So off you go in search of somewhere decent. We didnt quite find that quality here and to be fair it could have possibly been the fact that it was NYD that went against this place, maybe they were all pissed off to be working and hadnt been to the shops for fresh ingredients for a while. Anyhoo, I had a curry dish and my partner had a biriyani. We also ordered chips to soak up excess booze and were actually scrutinized by the next table, but whatever its nothing to do with the restaurant. I found my food to be...not quite to my palate. As did my partner. The staff, while nice enough, tended to watch your every move which was kind of awkward and off putting. It was also quite pricey for the quality of food we recieved. All in all, this wasnt the best start to our New Year! :(

The Balaka will never win any prizes for decor. (it doesn't have any) but the food is unbeleivable…read more The location is also ideal as it is within spitting distance of some of the best pubs in Dundee. Go in on a Friday or Saturday and you will see the same faces time and time again. This is always a good sign that the quality of food is of the highest standard. It's always best to book rather than just turn up as it is quite small and normally very busy.

Indian buffets have tended toward trays of food that sits out too long so things dry out, and the curries tend toward simple, monochrome flavors. Here the curries were complex and flavorful, the tandoori chicken was tender and succulent (not taut and dry as it can be), and the selection of foods, while not huge, was diverse (but most important) richly flavorful and well-maintained. If no-one was partaking at the time, the staff would rush over and put lids on the trays to preserve moisture, heat, and aroma. As soon as someone approached an area they would rush to remove the lids. At the table, when done with a plate, staff would whisk it away immediately. Great flavor, quality, service and attention to detail for a buffet, in a very pretty setting to boot. And just incredible value.

I have also encountered some serious bad form when having a meal with my partner. Basically, we had poppadoms, chutney, a starter each, shared a curry, had a rice each, a naan, some chips, had a dessert each and had about 3 beers each. Now already this would have came to an average of hmmm 50 odd quid, pretty good for a meal for 2. When we went to pay however, we were charged about £70. They had added an extra curry on the bill. Their reasoning was we both need to order a main dish. Fair enough usually...but noone had pointed to the tiny print on the back nor had it came up when we were ordering. Very very sneaky. Had we known, we would have skipped starters and dessert as we'd have been too full and they'd have ended up getting less than 40quid from us. It still saddens me to think that restaurants use such underhanded tactics to obtain extra cash from customers. The rule should have been pointed out. Very bad form.
