So exploring west London in preparation for Yelp's WestFest I stumbled upon this fabulous shop…read more Ignore the name, antiques enthusiasts look away now, the jewels here are for fashionistas! Art deco designs, 1950s plastic pineapples, Lady Di diamante replica drops, you name it and this shop has it! All with a price tag mind you but if you are looking for a special gift or item that will wow and impress all your friends look no further. You really can spend hours in here, or at least that's what I did. Everything is in a glass case as most of it is delicate and it must be hard stopping people with a five finger discount from snapping up these beauties otherwise. The items are all laid out thematically, so you'll find your scotty dog choker with the houndstooth broaches off course. Head on down if you have some time during the week, that way the whole place isn't over run by tourists and you can look in peace, even better than that, go on a rainy day... Notting Hill becomes a ghost town.

There are labels to let you know what styles/eras you are looking at and everything has a price tag on them. Please please go and see it for yourself. There are no words to describe the overwhelming beauty of the jewellery.

Finding this place was random and out of the blue, but I stepped inside Oi! because I got curious…read moreas to what else was in this shop after seeing the cases and displays of jewelry at the front. Right when I walked in, there's sterling silver jewelry pieces on the tables and on the counter (next to the register) with beading, wirework, and crystal/gemstone setting designs. If memory serves me correctly, the back of the shop has lots of other pieces that are fun and funky (and frankly the only things affordable for this poor- uni student's budget!). There are various acrylic bead bracelets, colorful pom-pom necklaces, and I remember even seeing plastic toy earring studs (Legos, or perhaps a British version of it?) in the basket mix. There's also a small side entrance within the middle of the store that connects to a small room filled with cute fabric handbags and plushie charms. In all honesty, as an arts-and-crafts person myself...I didn't really see too many pieces that were radically different nor incredibly innovative (in fact, a wallet clutches I ended up buying...I could've made it myself for less the cost if I wanted to make my own). But considering that it's all handmade, sold on Portobello Road (and that the USD is still weaker against the GBP), I do give credit that the earrings and wallet clutch I bought are still unique regardless and that I won't bump into someone anytime soon that have those same pieces.

I enjoyed a quiche. My daughters enjoyed strawberries topped with Nutella. We all shared a fish and chips meal from Poppie's which I highly recommend. Ben Day's collection specializes in precious gem set jewelry and you're always guaranteed to find…read moresomething a little bit special and a little bit different when browsing in his lovely shop in Spitafields. He has a real eye for colour and some of the pieces are just so amazing, all set with large gemstones. The pieces are very modern, but not in the scary too-much-of-a-statement way as they also have an air of classic wearability about them. They're very individual and I love to browse in here after pay day for a little something. It's a very friendly shop, and even though it's often quite quiet you're never made to feel watched, but if you do need a hand then they swap around different colours, sizes, make suggestions and really help you find something that compliments your look. Whilst if you're after something extra, extra special then you can have a piece commissioned by Ben himself.
**June 2022: Late Afternoon Friday Visit**…read more My friend and I were walking down Monmouth St. and I was enamored by the beautiful window display. The jewelry were bright and bold and evoke such Betsey Johnson vibes except with an emphasis on acrylic as their creative medium. We entered the store and oh my goodness everything was so eye catching - both in terms of designs as well as color palette. If you're a gal (or guy) who loves subdue understated jewelry this isn't the shop for you, as everything is extremely playful and witty. There were multiple items I wanted to purchase; however, the pricepoint is much higher than what I am use to; yet, you can think of it as paying for the design, and the fact that it's handmade by UK individuals. The smaller designs range in the £50 - £150 whereas the really stunning statement pieces around £200-£400. The extremely orange pieces can go up to £500+ I ended up getting a really beautiful blue parrot statement necklace that I'm sure would be a head turner. Can't wait to see more of their beautiful collection!

How thrilling that Yelp is now in the UK- that means I can review my beloved Stephen Einhorn!…read more I discovered Stephen Einhorn last year while doing some random engagement ring searches online. As much as I love the boyfriend (now fiance), and as good as he is with the gift-buying, an engagement ring is a pretty big gift, and I just wanted to be able to at least hint at what I hoped for, since I had a few specifics in mind. I knew I didn't want a diamond, I knew I wanted the stone to be set in the band (I had visions of a stone snagging on every surface in my house). . . I also wanted to make sure the materials used for my ring were ethically sourced. Stephen Einhorn fit the bill perfectly. As soon as I saw the Times Square ring, I was in love. When I saw it with a pink sapphire, I was head over heels. And now, many months later, I am happy to say that it is the most attractive part of my dry, winter-ravaged hands. Sigh. To note, the fiance said that it was exactly what he'd had in mind before I showed it to him. So I just did the legwork. Of course I can't really comment on the customer service or ordering process or anything like that. But I still find myself checking out the website and drooling over the unique, punk-rock-y jewelery. Someday when I have money, I'll come back to SE for gifts. . . mostly for myself.

Sarah and Barry lent a very personal experience for a transaction conducted completely via email communication. I had many questions throughout the process and they answered one with expertise that provided me comfort and great confidence. Numerous times, I had very specific requests about certain details with the set, and Sarah walked me through each one. The most pleasing moment was receipt of the rings in the US. The studio photos of the crafting process were impressive, however in hand, the set was far more extraordinary. There are not enough positive recommendations I can make for McCaul Goldsmiths. Their expertise and artisanship is beyond excellence. Their customer service is exemplary, leaving a first-time customer feeling like they had done business with them for years. My only regret is not being able to visit the shop in person (something I wish to do in the future). If you want above and beyond service, and dedication to craft, seek out McCaul Goldsmiths. I cannot wait for my next purchase.
