Take the turn at the blue sign marked moonshine arch. google maps took us into steinaker state park. its not there. follow the road and take a left. you will end up in a dirt parking lot. that is it. there is not any signage at the trail head. i would recommend turning on your all trails map when you go as there are several routes once you get on the trail not sure where they all go but several folks we encountered had gotten lost and it took them longer. and it was HOT. the arch was cool at the end and there is a cave you can sit in and cool off. The trail is all sand so be prepared for that. it does make it a little more challenging than a typical dirt trail.

Look for a 3 toed depression and look at multiple angles to catch the tracks in the sun and shadow. The Trail is easy to moderate with some up and down over sandstone so boots are the best option for footwear. The purple lupine were blooming in late May and made a striking contrast against the bright sand.

They have hammock sites (where you could just set up hammocks to sleep in outside), teepees, RV sites, tent sites. Pretty much anything you could want. We went during the week and there was plenty of camping sites available. Though if it was full you would be right on top of your neighbors. Thankfully for us there was hardly anyone there. The camping area is not too far from the boat ramp. So it was easy to take our paddleboards and kayaks down and then drive back up and hit the water. The views here are so lovely. Really so unique. The reds and whites in the mountains and seeing all the rock layers. Make playing in the water pretty awesome. During the day there seemed to be a lot of users. Not as much as some of teh local lakes to me in Colorado but still busy. If you are wanting to rent a watercraft you would want to get there sooner rather than later. Not sure how their rental policy is working now as we brought our own kayaks and paddleboards this time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was calm and peaceful and relaxing. Would definitely come back.

So we booked in the only available hotel and kept driving around to see a few other natural beauties that otherwise we wouldn't have seeing... Perfect place to spend a day or a weekend enjoying the outdoors, picnic, boat, kayak, take tons of pictures, and of course, drink plenty of good wine!!!

After spending 5 glorious days exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, I was making…read moremy way back to Salt Lake City, Utah for my return flight home to Florida. Since the drive from Jackson, Wyoming to SLC Airport is almost 5 hours and 300 miles away, I decided to break it up with a pitstop along the way here at Flaming Forge National Recreation Area. I had read and heard good things about Flaming Gorge...being very picturesque...that it peaked my interest to come and see what this place was all about. And like I mentioned it was in almost direct line with my travels back to Salt Lake City. First coming upon the Flaming Gorge area....there's a huge dam built as you make your way south on US 191. At this stage, slow your car down as there's a DAM VISTA (situated on the left hand side of the road) that you turn into and park at a small lot. Here...get out of your car and there's a COOL OVERLOOK that captures views of the entire Flaming Gorge Dam. This area is a nice spot for photos. It sort of reminded me of being at iconic Hoover Dam in Vegas/Arizona. Making your way past and across the Flaming Gorge Dam and bridge, you come upon the Visitors Center. I stopped inside and picked up a souvenir keychain and postcard at the VC though there wasn't much else going on. You do get some ground eye level views of the water and surrounding area but the looks here weren't special. One thing...inside the Visitors Center, you can make an appointment for a tour to walk across the bridge suspended over the dam. This could be a worthwhile opportunity for scenic moments (same at Hoover Dam), but since I was managing my time before my flight home, I couldn't hang around for too long. Now if you continue driving on US 191 towards Manila, Utah...the road eventually turns into Highway 44. Along this Highway 44 for a short distance (few miles)....here's where things GET GOOD! Absolutely stop at RED CANYON! Make a right turn as the sign says and turn into Red Canyon Rec Area and follow the path until the end and park. Get out here and walk to the BEAUTIFUL VISTA AND PANORAMA SPOT highlighting the winding river embedded between the red and green toned rocky landscape! Finally, continuing on Hwy 44 for 28 miles towards Manila, Utah...you'll come upon more grand scenery. I have to mention SHEEP CREEK OVERLOOK!!! As you make your way down the winding countryside road, SLOW DOWN THE CAR and on your LEFT HAND SIDE (it can be missed if you drive too fast), you'll find SHEEP CREEK OVERLOOK. Park and get out of your car and walk up the short hill and you'll discover GLORIOUS AND SPECTACULAR SIGHTS characterizing what Flaming Gorge is all about!! The river water combined with unique colorful and rocky terrain intermingling together made for one of the BEST VIEWPOINTS I can recall IN A LONG TIME! This spot is why I decided to visit Flaming Gorge in the first place! For me...a real humbling moment to gaze into the distance and stop reality for a moment. Eventually, I came upon Manila, Utah. At this small town you can stop for food, gas, supplies, and a gift shop. From here, I continued on my way back to Salt Lake City Airport for my red eye flight home. For anyone interested in discovering Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, I hope my itinerary finds you well. Although there's so much beautiful topography in Utah and Wyoming, this area right on the border of both states deserves more attention and recognition.

I just returned from four days of rafting (a good mix of whitewater and flat-water) and camping…read morewith an amazing group of people on Adrift's "Rivers of Babylon" Specialty trip through Dinosaur National Monument. This was a solo trip for me as I needed to get away and put my life back in perspective. Javi and his crew at Adrift were amazing. I had no problems booking this trip and all my calls and emails were answered in a timely manner. The guides are professional, educational, energetic, and excellent culinary camping chefs (the food is really the only thing that is not primitive on this trip, and it is plentiful and excellent) really just good people with a really good vibe. They were always there to assist or answer any of your questions regarding camping, the environment, rafting.. whatever, they always made time for you. The scenery on this trip is indescribable... like taking a picture of the Grand Canyon... you cant really do it.. you must experience it... the only way to see this amazing place is by raft...The number of trips through this National Park is limited so human impact is limited as well. The environment is pristine.. like stepping back in time. You add primitive camping and a plethora of amazing hiking opportunities (pristine creeks, rivers, deer, mountain goats, waterfowl and birds of all kinds, plants beyond count, waterfalls, meadows, canyons, craggy cliffs and mind boggling sky high canyon walls) it makes a spectacular trip for anyone; Solo, an adventurous couple, friends, or a family (there is an age restriction). Make no mistake. This is not a hyped up Disneyland. This is remote primitive camping in the natural world where your transportation to amazing camping sites is by raft. There are no roads and there is no communication in or out via cellphone. The people in our group (including Javi and the guides) were from all over. Everyone together is what made this trip so successful IMO. From Canada to Cuba, to Bahamas, Texas and Hawaii. All different personalities and life experiences that we all got to share and enjoy. Each person I met was very cool and special in their own way. There was no drama. There was camaraderie and friendship and everyone helped and supported each other. There was also ample time to spend with your own thoughts.. your own contemplation of your place in the World... its that kind of environment. you make this trip what you want.. This was an Adrift "Specialty Trip" and we had two amazing individuals each with their own special gifts; International reggae singer/songwriter/storyteller Mishka and his young son, and Reda Boustani a certified Baptiste yoga instructor/life coach. We were invited to experience each of these wonderful individuals special gifts. Mishka played around the campfire each evening and even on the flat-water though Echo Park! Was a wonderful experience. And Reda invited us for morning yoga to relax our mind, body, and spirit. He also was the mind behind several of our amazing meals. (All of the meals were prepared fresh with quality and nutritious ingredients) it was nice to spend time with them during this experience.. Adrift put together a well organized, fun, adventurous trip with no hassles. Do not hesitate to book a trip with them. In fact, my new annual solo trip will be a specialty trip with Adrift Dinosaur. Just do it... you will not regret it.

They assigned us to spots that were already occupied. They asked us to just go pick two empty spots and let them know which ones we chose. While speaking to the person at the desk they smelled of marijuana, which could explain the confusion. We parked and went to use the restrooms around 2pm. The restrooms were absolutely disgusting. The showers were equally as disgusting. We spoke to Manager, Mr. Orr and asked for a refund. Orr was long on excuses and short on customer service or hospitality. Orr stated they clean the facilities at 7am and 7pm, and to use them close to those times. The grounds are littered with trash. This place is a dump!

I was very happy to get a cabin last minute Thursday evening. It was $250 for one night. The cabin…read morewas very nice, so I was happy to pay the price. I booked a guided fishing trip for early the following morning. I woke at 6:00 am packed my belongings. When I looked under the bed to see if I had missed anything, I was mortified. There were beer cans, nicotine tin, tissues, and what appeared to be some sort of bone. Yes, a meat bone. I had to meet my guide at 7:00 am. The store was closed so I called the posted phone number to report the issue. A man answered the second number I dialed. I told him what happened. He told me the store opened at 6:30 and he couldn't do anything. At 6:30 the store opened and I talked to a woman at the counter and showed her the pictures. I asked her to look at the cabin. She said she believed me and I texted the pictures to her. When I returned from my fishing trip it was around 5:00 pm. I went into the store and talked to a different woman behind the counter. She told me she had to talk to someone and left. When she returned, she said the manager would take ten percent off the room rate. No apology or anything. I told her that was unacceptable. She left again and a few minutes later the manager, Dave, came out. To make a long story short, Dave accused me of placing the trash under the bed. I told him that I am a retired peace officer, a lieutenant with a CA agency and an upstanding person. He again accused me of putting the trash under the bed as some sort of scam. He said he gets scammed all the time. I took umbrage to this and told him off. He told me to leave, grabbed my arm and started to escort me out. I told him to take his hand off me, which he did. Then he told me he was going to get five guys to take me out. I said, "go ahead". He said he was going to call the police. I said , "please do". When he didn't, I did. A sheriff deputy arrived a short time later. I told him I realized he couldn't do anything and he said he'd talk to Dave. He asked if I paid with a credit card and I said I did. He said if they decided to give me a refund, I would see a credit. I told him I wouldn't expect to see that. I have my own Airbnb and am a super host. I would never treat my guests this way. I would have probably been satisfied with a sincere apology, but 10 percent off the room rate with no apology? That's an insult. And he sends his employee back to extend the offer rather than come talk to me himself. The fishing guide told me he's heard nothing but bad things about Dutch John resort. I've read some other reviews, all negative. Dave is mentioned specifically in one, similar attitude. The owner brushes them all off as disgruntled customers, unjustified.
