We just tried The Diplomat restaurant tonight in La Verne. We ordered the combo plate for two, wine, a beer (the Lebanese pils), halloumi appetizer, and baklava for dessert. Everything was great! What stood out to us the most were the halloumi grilled cheese pieces and the chicken, which had a great aromatic flavor, was juicy, and was perfectly cooked! Originally go to the one in Glendora, but since they're closed on Mondays, we decided to check out the one in La Verne. Really glad we did. We love the hummus with beef and it was just as tender and juicy as the Diplomat Jr. in Glendora. There is a difference in the size of meat. Glendora gives larger pieces of meat but the taste is the same. We did try a new appetizer. We got got the soujouk, I was not a fan, but that might just be me. I found the sausage to be overcooked. I think if the tomatoes were served uncooked it would have been better. It is served on a pita bread, it just needed something else. The staff was amazing. THE BEST!! Where do I even start this has been my go to place since relocating to this area. I have this food probably 4 times a month. My go to is the beef hummus it is always amazing at this location, the beef kabob is always cooked to perfection and seasoned just perfectly. The staff is always so friendly and welcoming, the ambiance feels like you're enjoying a home cooked meal. This restaurant is really good and the prices are so much more reasonable than another popular Mediterranean place nearby. Their hummus is delicious and the falafel is the perfect balance of crunchy on the outside but still moist on the inside. Treated my mom out to this delicious spot in La Verne. Wow 4.8 stars this place must be good. We ordered the fried cauliflower appetizer (recommend it!) and their Combo Platter for 2 that comes with chicken, beef and lule. We substituted the rice for spinach and I'm glad we did. The way they cooked their spinach was very tasty filled with lemon and garlic. The chicken and beef were satisfying although I didn't like the lule. It tasted like lamb which I don't eat. I explained to our server that it tasted like lamb but he assured me it is only ground beef. He was nice enough to take it back and served us a chicken kabob to replace it. What an unpleasant shock we endured! We thought we'd be paying the prices that are clearly labeled on their website but when we picked up our takeout order it was SO much more. It states $10 for fried cauliflower on their site but when we got there they charged us $14! And almost a $3 charge for paying with a credit card (which was never mentioned beforehand). Only option now is a pretty sizable one for about 5 or more people for $10. I didn't order during my last two visits due to the size/amount. I originally tried Diplomat Jr in Glendora and wasn't impressed with the food at all. I thought I'd give this location a chance in case they did a better job. Unfortunately, it was consistently disappointing. There were 1 star aspects about the food, but will give it 2 stars because the service was friendly and prompt, the establishment is clean and attractive enough, and the food potions and presentation were acceptable. First of all, their pickled turnips were dry and flavorless! How is it possible to mess this up? I don't know if it was the lemon and spice combo, but the Makanek lamb sausage tasted like the meat was spoiled. It was off putting to the point where the 4 of us couldn't even get through the one appetizer. Fortunately, none of us became sick after eating it. The Bouregs are too heavy on the dough ratio. We did not get through these either because we just felt like we ate a brick of lard after just one bite. The falafel wrap had a bitter taste to it. It was still edible, but not enjoyable at all. On a neutral to positive note: the kebabs, rice pilaf and hummus were decent, but not memorable in any way. I don't understand how this place has such high ratings. There are other Lebanese restaurants in the area that do a much better job with their flavors and offerings. For a first time experience, Diplomat hit all the marks as a new contender in the area. I have been enjoying chicken shawarma since Aladdin's was the only spot in town, so that was a really long time ago. Since then, Georgie's (both Covina and Glendora) have become a favorite, but I'd have to say Diplomat is one of the best impressions I've had in a very long time. I came here based on the positive feedback from my roomies, and they told me to try the spicy labneh sauce. Wow, I've never had anything that was both creamy, spicy, and cooling at the same time. That was a new experience. The cheese rolls were tasty. The garlic was super garlicky which I loved, and the shawarma was really tasty. It had kick to it and tasted better than a lot of shawarma I've had. I usually stay away from the pickled cabbage, but everything was so good that I ended up trying the cabbage with the shawarma, and I think I've been missing out! I'll start eating it more often now! Compared to the other restaurants I've been to, I'd say the portions are less, but the quality of everything I had was levels above. I'd like to try this place two or three more times with friends to see if this places holds a top three spot now. Georgie's and Eden (in Pasadena with their different kinds of hummus) are not the top two. The other spot was/is Janet's in Duarte, but I think it's about to get knocked off. The service here is amazing. One of the gentleman apologized for the wait and share that they are understaffed, but I had no problem with wait time. It didn't feel long at all, and food was brought out in a timely fashion. If the stress was on the back end with prep and cooking, I really appreciate that they worked so hard to get food out, and I hope that add additional needed staff to help. On a few occasions, the gentleman who took my order asked how things were going and asked how the food was. The experience overall was amazing. I'd say this is more of a classy dining experience with wine and bar offerings. I really appreciate the care and attention for service and food provided by Diplomat and encourage you to try. If you've never eaten the pickled cabbage, pair it with the shawarma and rice all at once. I admit now, I've been missing out. Diplomat has shown me there's levels to the shawarma game.
