I recently rode on the Christmas trolley to see the lights in Sarasota. The tour was lovely, and the guide was entertaining. There are multiple trolleys, but they all take the same route in the lit neighborhoods here. The guide played Christmas music, and the tour is fun for all ages. The price is not too crazy, but be sure to bring cash to tip your driver.

My friend and I signed up for the hour and forty-five minute Amish tour. They are one of the only tour companies in the area to offer this, so we were really looking forward to it. Communication from the tour company was great, and on the day of, we parked at the starting spot, shopped the little tourist store, and then boarded the roomy trolley. The trolley holds 31, and apparently we had a crew of 29. The tour guide, Kendra, was OUTSTANDING. So knowledgeable about both the Amish and Mennonites, and it was definitely a mini-history lesson, which I loved. The tour took us into the Amish part of town, where it seemed almost everyone got around by bicycles - no horse and buggies in this tiny Pinecraft village. This is apparently where the northern Amish winter as snowbirds. We then went to a local hotel that caters to the Amish, where we got a sampling of pie shots, talked with the manager about his experiences, and then were told stories of the hanging quilts and the photographs hanging in the lobby showing the early Amish days. From there we went to a quilting shop and had a brief talk about quilting. I bought a couple of beautiful handmade pot holders here. The main problem with this tour was that not enough time was allocated for each stop. The tour clientele was mainly older, and they needed longer to get on and off the trolley. When we got to the hotel, the tour guide, knowing I wanted to buy pies, told me there would not be enough time to stop at the nearby Amish store, which was supposed to be part of the tour. She advised my friend and I to run over during the hotel lobby tour, which we did. All in all I definitely recommend the tour, but plan on paying a visit to an Amish market separately.

Just finished with the Christmas Carol Trolley and everyone had a blast. Great way to get you in the Christmas spirit. We had an excellent performer who gave us history of Christmas, history of Sarasota, sang Christmas songs, read letters from Santa, and even told us jokes. We had a wonderful trolley ride throughout Sarasota, and even picked up some singers along the way, who performed Christmas songs we sang along with. Lots of fun, great festivities, and an amazing time. Sad that it had to come to an end for the night! Keep up the great work!

Finally got around to booking this place for the "ghost tour" and man were we NOT disappointed! First of all the initial welcome was super friendly and there was FREE BEER and wine! How can you not appreciate FREE BEER and wine? The host (Kaylene? i SO apologize if the name is wrong) was amazing. The wife and I chatted her up while waiting on the arrival of the trolley and got some insider knowledge of the surrounding neighborhood and Sarasota in general. Once the tour started she went into performance mode and it was GREAT! From her knowledge of the hauntings and ghostly history of downtown Sarasota, to her funny sing-a-longs, her background in theater definitely came to the front. You can tell she loves her job! Secondly, at certain stops, another personage would enter the trolley to give us first hand recollections of that part of history. Without spoiling it for you, all I will say is they were AMAZING! Lastly, I have to thank our driver, who deftly maneuvered that huge trolley thru Friday night downtown traffic without incident. TOTALLY worth the ticket price! We will be back for a different tour in the future! If you're new to the area, or just want to learn more about it DO THIS! You wont be sorry!

We decided to do this tour our first day in Sarasota to get an idea on what to do next. It was a good idea because the tour gave us lots of ideas of places to visit and where to eat. Our tour guide Jon MacDonald was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Overall a great experience.

People have fixed up many of the homes and it's less mansiony and more community pride type feel than fancier locales. At its heart is the lovely Cuscaden pool and park complex. Many of the homes have very high ceilings to keep them cooler. A gangster's home complete with wood paneling, extensive bar area, and bullet holes was one of the stops. And some British peeps have fixed up a gorgeous house that was just in its early stages of renovation last year. Another highlight this year were the homeowners who bought a boarded up place and fixed it up to have members of the original family that owned it come by amd tell.them how happy they were to see it restored. Theu even shared family pictures and it turns out both families were military and immigrants. Super beautiful!!! Everyone was very nice and friendly and the organizers did a great job. The President of this little college had the audacity to send a telegraph to one of the world's greatest architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, and asked him to design buildings. Wright accepted the challenge. He envisioned buildings rising "out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun." Wright designed 18 structures between 1938 and 1958 (he died in 1959), 12 were built despite sometimes limited funds (not many millionaire alumni like ivy league schools), WWII, etc. THESE ARE WORTH SEEING ! The AAA book stated that one hour basic tours depart at 10, noon, and 2. We planned for noon, but phoned ahead and were informed that the one hour tours ($20) would be offered that day at 10 and 2 (they also offer an in depth tour that lasts more than two hours and costs $35). It is best to make reservations. In 2013, FSC opened this education center and gift shop and built a Wright Usonian House next to it. Wright had imagined many of these Usonian houses along the lake for faculty. Our guide was a beautiful, brilliant African-American Senior English major (Kasha?). We were two and four others joined our tour group. We walked around the campus and entered a few of the Wright structures. Our guide was very knowledgeable concerning Wright in general and these buildings in particular. She answered our many questions. After walking around for an hour (this tour may not be for people with ambulation issues) we ended up at the Usonian house (next to the gift shop) where she elucidated the details of this little masterpiece and then set up a video about Wright and FSC to complete the story. If you happen to be in central Florida and have even a mild appreciation of advanced 20th century architecture, go see the Wright buildings at FSC.

My husband discovered this home on it and decided to make a trip out here on a Tuesday afternoon, around 1:30 pm. I had emailed one of the owners (Carol) and made a phone call earlier but unfortunately had not heard a response. On a whim, my husband decided to just knock on the door and ask if we could have a tour. To our surprise, Blake answered the door and was more than happy to offer us a tour of his home. According to Blake, his wife, Carol, had just had cataract surgery and so she was not able to join in on this tour (which also made sense why I had not heard from her via email. However I do want to mention that she did email me back the next day after this tour visit). I want to briefly talk about both this highly talented husband and wife team. Carol Sackman has a background in art and Blake White is a self taught artist. Their home is covered with objects that include antique button jewelry, mosaic tiling, glass and dishware. There is a lot of Asian pieces used for some of the sculptures and covering on the the walls. This labor of love took about 15 years to make and this couple still have plans to continue adding to it all. Blake started out telling us about some of the artwork he and his wife had made on the front porch and then lead us to the side of the home where we saw a few bird baths and a large Saint Bernard dog (which he referred to as the guard dog). Here it was where Blake just briefly talked about "Brother Can You Spare A Dime" panel that he made for the St. Petersburg Folk Festival. This panel expresses how he feels about corporate greed. Another panel we come to was made by Carol. Blake had said that one of her friends had breast cancer and just wanted her friends to get together and create some art. Once in a while, some of their pieces here around the house may be collaborated with their friends but most of it was created by the 2 of them. Blake eventually led us to the backyard where there are still even more colorful panels. I especially love the tree of life panel that is in the middle of the back of the house. Blake also shows us his art studio, which is different from Carol's. Blake really likes to dabble with doing his own tile glazing (in which he has 2 large ovens, or kilns, in the corner of his studio) and tells us about what has inspired him to decorate his studio. Later on he takes us to Carol's studio, which has a different vibe and creativity. Carol likes to paint on fabric and also likes to use buttons and other types of objects in her art. We were told that they also like to teach art classes in their home and will travel (mostly in the summer) to various art shows to try to sell some of their art (they consider their art to be folk art style). After that, we are taken inside the house from the back entrance. Here we see Blake's bathroom, which of course he also decorates to the same style of the outside of the home. Later on when we come to the kitchen, we see coffee cups and sauces made out of tiles on the walls and flooring and coffee stenciled all along the counters. Blake and Carol are big time coffee lovers (and love cats as well, as Blake said they had about 9 or so cats). We eventually make our way to the living room where Blake shares a few stories with us about some personal items that are in the room (like a painting and this boat that was brought back from China from a good friend). And then we conclude the tour outside, right back on his front porch. Blake tells us that the arch way that is in front of their home was made by their friend Bruce. He made it out of wood and this talented couple just started decorating it. On the front of the arch way, at the top, has words "Changes Make Waves". On one side of the arch are pink letters that spell out Carol's mother's name and some of her friends, in a way to honor them. We were told that pets are also honored too. After the tour, Blake more than welcomed me to stay and take all the photos that I wanted and to take my time to look at everything. My husband and I (and I'm sure our little girl too) felt so honored to have a tour by Blake and truly enjoyed learning about him and Carol and their inspiration for creating their home. If you are looking for something out of the box, consider checking out the Mosaic Art House. If you are interested in a (free) tour, you can email Carol, carolblakeart@gmail.com or call 727-736-4036.
