Unless your kid is already an Olympic athlete--or you're ready to worship at the altar of unchecked ego--look elsewhere. I came in genuinely interested in signing my daughter up and asked some very normal questions: Who can she ask for help? Will she be taught proper technique? You know... basic stuff. Apparently, that was too much. The owner was immediately defensive, dismissive, and ultimately kicked us out--for asking questions. The class? Total chaos. About 40 kids, two instructors, no mirrors, no instruction. Just lots of "Yes sir, no sir," random drills, and games. My daughter was sent to kick a bag with zero instruction on how to kick. When I pointed that out, the owner actually said: "We don't teach technique unless you're an athlete. It's a waste of time." That's a direct quote. So beginners? Too bad. No questions allowed either--students are expected to watch and somehow just "get it." Spoiler: they won't. He bragged about one student who made it to the Olympics (good for her!), but there's no way to tell if she succeeded because of his teaching or in spite of it. What's clear is this place is built around his ego, not student growth. Honestly, I feel bad for the assistants and instructors working under that mindset. You can't grow a program--or students--when feedback is treated like a personal attack. We've since found a new studio that actually teaches, listens, and welcomes beginners without expecting blind obedience. This place? A hard pass. read more

Customer service is horrible! I called well in advance and was told to bring my child in at 4:30pm. So when that day came I took my child in and while we're waiting some guy comes out the back and asks if I'm a member and I said no I was told to bring my child in at 4:30pm to try out the class. He asks my child age and then saids I don't have you down in my book whoever missed informed you about the times it's 6:15pm I don't have time to talk to you come back at 6:15pm. I told him I can't make that time so he starts looking at different dates for 6:15pm and I told him it's okay I'll reach back out when I figure out my schedule and he instantly got upset. It's really very cool to see how quickly your child will transform in this program. My son started in the Little Dragon's program a few months ago and while we knew he was going to be interested in taekwondo, we had no idea how obsessed he'd become instantly! As a child on the spectrum, we have seen huge improvements in his joint attention, discipline, turn taking, and learning routines. There are kids in his class who have been attending longer and are great role models during class. I love that Master Garmany sets clear rules for how to behave in class. He has had my son sit out when he's misbehaving and it's been really good for him to have a direct consequence. He really doesn't want to have to sit out and understands that there is a certain way he needs to behave to participate. Stamps during class for good behavior and stickers at the end are the biggest deal to my son, it's really adorable. Master Garmany really has thought about everything when putting this business together. I love that the Little Dragon's class is so child friendly. Watching little films before class starts, listening to CoComelon during musical chairs, imaginative play during warm up and stretch time. It's really sweet. Now, here's where it gets even more exciting. There is a room full of toys and imaginative play that the little ones can go in, or their siblings. Great amount of seating area to watch your kids. There's an epic arcade for kids and parents to come nerd out in. And there is an awesome workout area for parents to use anytime. All of this is included in your child's membership! I also love that Master Garmany coordinates lots of events that the kids can attend, participate, or help out in. Star Wars movie nights, rock concerts, taco trucks, um yes please! He wanted to have both parents present and when they were not he asked us to go to front desk and leave to reschedule. We originally signed our kids up because we thought this would be great for them to get out and do something. The first couple weeks I complained because it covid we are still in a pandemic and they allow so many families in one room. People literally will bring their husband/wife, their other kids who aren't in karate, and more to the class making the class extremely packed. It was overwhelming for me to have so many people next to each other and so many kids in one class that the instructors can't help with each kid. My son was stuck on the same belt because they had no more belts for him , they tested my daughter without me there & I didn't sign the paper for her to be tested so that was another upsetting thing. I tried to deal with it but the Covid cases kept rising and it kept scaring me how many people they allow in. There's also no time to book your class ahead of time to prevent the class from being extremely large. In August I got sick and then it went through the house one by one. I didn't feel comfortable taking the kids to karate due to being sick of course we were charged that was no problem but I then called and asked can we cancel just due to being scared of coming back and catching Covid at their place. So instead I was told he would put me on a two month hold and then he would call me and see where we were at. Didn't receive a call but he sure did charge us the $247 . But again fine we didn't call either to follow up so we will just dispute with our bank. anyways I call and let me say that nice guy who talked you in to getting your kids to do karate was gone, he was so rude!!!!!! I explained we wanted to cancel because we were charged $247 and haven't even been there in two months nobody's called nobody said hey how can we make this better nothing. He basically said " there's nothing I can do about that we have to build our business right now I'll take your info and cancel you" didn't apologize and say he sorry that happen unfortunately there's no refunds I'm sorry I didn't reach out I'm at sorry I didn't address your concerns to get you to stay nothing he took my information and we hung up the phone. This is primarily a review of the kids Taekwondo program. I don't know much about their adult classes but knowing what I know about the kids classes I wouldn't take any of those either. Please do your research and take trial classes before you invest any money. First, is this a McDojo? Yes it is. However; there are skills that your child can learn from this facility, just not the art of Taekwondo. The kids that I ran into who were "black belts" were extremely kind and courteous. They were alarmingly young for black belts but they definitely had a black belt attitude or mentality. That's where it ends unfortunately. Watching the black and brown belts train was a joke. They did not have black belt's technique. They were sloppy. I feel bad for them because they are very proud of their belts but they just aren't real black belts and they have no clue. This is a belt factory where getting your next promotion is more about the money then the skill. It's obvious that they push the belt tests often, which is a disguise to keep the kids and parents excited and proud, as well as keeping the parent paying extra money for the belt exams, but it's all fake because your child's promotions mean nothing at this place other than the fact you paid for it. With that being said, the only reason that I am not giving this scam 0 stars is because your kids will learn some respect and responsibility here. Your child would learn that in a legitimate martial arts gym as well. Your child will not learn a martial art and will have a false sense of pride when they grow up and realize their black belt mean nothing. The price range that was giving to me was $180/month, incredibly outrageous for the low quality training these kids were getting. I was hesitant about the price and Master Garmany was willing to be flexible on prices to be fair. From what I could tell Master Garmany seemed to be pretty good with the kids as well, but it all felt very "car salesman" like. All I can say is they offer a few freebie classes. If you insist that I am lying go try them out and see for yourself. When you see a bunch of black belts running around that are under 12 years old, watch their form and their technique. Ask them if they spar. Ask questions. Don't be a sucker. Don't fall for Master Garmany's videos, especially his star Olympic Poomsae videos. Keep your mind open and make a smart decision for your child. There are much more striking oriented marital art gyms in Stockton that will give your child real skill, and real training. They will be much more satisfied as they grow up knowing that they earned their belts through hard work, perseverance, and growth. Side Story: Master Garmany knew that I wasn't ignorant of mixed martial arts. He kept insisting that my wife comes or goes on speaker phone anytime we talked about my son's training or commitment. I felt this is a tactic used by this facility to get the wife on board with the talks of "your kid will learn responsibility, and respect etc. I asked if they spar and he didn't answer the question direct, he also told me wife "We're not interested in making your son an MMA champion, but we will make him learn respect", that's when I was completely out. Not because I want to push my son into MMA, but because that means that he knows the training is crap, and your kids will not learn real striking techniques and will not be able to apply them in sparing, competition or if needed an actual fight. read more

We have been coming to DMA since September and we love it. I have two children currently enrolled in the beginner class and attend twice a week. We love the flexibility of the schedule and the family atmosphere. Outside of classes there are activities for families to get together with the team and other families and it really feels like a community. The trainers really make the lessons fun for the kids to keep them engaged while also bringing consistent lessons for manners and character building. I was seeking quality instruction at a quality facility. I thought I had found the spot because this place seemed enormous with plenty of foot space and plenty of seats for the parents. Unfortunately I soon found out it was mostly a scam designed to look great, and once again the price outweighed the value. They got me in the door by giving me 2 weeks to a month free, but after 2 days they were eager that I sign up. I told them that I still had a decent amount of free days left and I wanted to check it out further, and the guy that runs the place just got angry. When it came time to signing up, he had told me that there wouldn't be a contract for me, but then he tried to get me to sign a paper that said CONTRACT. I asked him about it and he just ignored it and said not to worry about that. I didn't want to sign anymore and the guy threw a fit. I soon realized I was being tricked and bullied. Places like this are very unprofessional and have no real integrity.They try to get as much money out of you, while hardly teaching you a thing, even if your at a high belt level, your not gonna be that good because these places are designed that way so that they can take as much out of your pocket as they can. My daughter has been coming here for 17 months. This place isn't cheap, but I have found it well worth it. My now 6-year daughter has really improved so much since being here. OK, she can still use a lot of work as far as her actual martial arts are concerned, but everything else has improved so much and I know a lot of it had to do with the positive exposure here. She used to get in trouble often at school, especially for being a distraction and talking. This still happens, but now it's maybe once a month (not daily). She used to also give up very easily, "I can't do it!" Now she says, "I'm not sure if I can do that... but I can try!" This even applies to trying new foods too! Of everything, what I've noticed the greatest improvement is being able to be focused. For example, math homework she used to need a break every few problems. Now she can do several pages without any breaks! She also takes constructive criticisms much more positively. The staff here has been excellent. Especially having other students instruct are wonderful role models, showing that anyone can do it with effort! There are also multiple classes during the week and often fun events on weekends to fit your schedule! read more

I think that you should take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. Personal finances should not necessarily be a part of a school's effectiveness. On a more positive note, this school delivers! Not only does it produced a very high degree of quality Tae Kwon Do athletes, not just black belts but State AND National champions, but it also helps instill and foster hard work and dedication to students in an age where everything is handed to them. The higher belts are definitely earned as there is no free ride to black belt here! I am most happy with what my children are learning other than straight martial arts, specifically, dedication, self discipline, courtesy, self confidence and the reward of hard work! Plus they are together in an atmosphere of winners (again state AND national champs). What better environment to expose my children? Master Garmany is great with kids and they respect him. In the end, it is a business and he does have to be able to sustain his business. I for one am all for supporting our local businesses in Stockton, especially one that takes pride in bringing up our youth with respect and courtesy in an age where this is sorely missed. My 2 sons and daughter trained for many years under Master Garmany. 2 of them earned their Black Belts and you can't put a price on the valuable lessons and techniques they learned at Discovery Martial Arts....My daughter started taekwondo at the age of 5, she's now 16 and still trains. Master Garmony laid this foundation for my daughters taekwondo career. My daughter trained with Master Garmony from the age of 5 to 12, and to this day she continues to stop in and train. To say these students aren't Black Belts, is a total disrespect to the school and my daughter. Do you think a sloppy Black Belt with no technique could achieve all of this My daughter has won 3 Pan American Championships, is a 7 time state champion and she has been on the USA Team for 3 years and has traveled all over the world, not sure what more you could ask for as a Black Belt?!?! We would still be over paying by $50 and he said "ok 1 month free" we decided to cancel.. because we no longer felt comfortable with someone who handles his business in that way.... we called for a refund and the "master" ended up hanging up on my husband with "wow! ok I'll refund your $" and hung up. It has now been 2 weeks and I still have not received a refund!!! I called and they said to give it a few more days! We have two girls taking lessons here and have been very happy with what they are learning and how we are treated by the staff. They do so much more than just learning to fight. They are training kids to become pillars of the community. They get involved to help kids do well in school, even providing tutoring for those who need it. They have an extensive program to help deal with bullies at school or elsewhere, going so far as to even come to the schools and give demonstrations and talk with the students about how to diffuse bullies. They even collect and handout backpacks filled with essentials for the homeless. Overall we love it here and couldn't imagine being anywhere else to help teach our kids how to protect themselves! read more

He asked if my husband could be there, I said no. He said to come anyway. When we got there , we went into the back room with all the other new parents. The master went over how successful they were in training. Felt like a time share presentation. Then he engaged the kids and my son loved it. New kids joined the class that was going on in the main room. After the class he invited all the new parents back to the back room to discuss pricing , I'm assuming. I followed because that is what I was there to find out. I sat down with my 2 kids and he asked me if my husband could be on the phone to listen in. I said no, he's not available. He then asked me to leave and go to the front desk to rebook another appointment when we could both be here. I said we work opposite schedules . He told me again to go up front. The master and the front desk knew it was just me before going and they still invited me anyway, just to ask me to leave. I was very upset and confused. I then spoke to the woman at the front desk who was very nice and told her that it's not possible to have us both here. We are only off Fridays together and offcorse they are closed fridays. We were there for an hour and a half and I didn't even get a price. I can only assume what they discussed in the back room but I have a feeling they were going to try to get contracts on the spot while your child is begging you to sign. Not cool. read more

We have had our children attending for 6 months. We just canceled our membership and have nOTHING good to say. They are very expensive...$125.00/month per child. They are also VERY sales driven, so you pay extra every ten weeks after your child ''promotes'. It was an additional $50.00 to get the new promotion belt and $40.00 to test. In addition to the price, we recently lost our jobs and decided that karate would have to be something we had to cut from our monthly budget. The owner told us that they did not allow students to quit. in order to leave our membership, we had to show proof of moving out of state! Are you kidding me!!??? My 5 year old was excited to go to class, but for $130/month I was expecting classes to be at least an hour and he would get hands on training. Well the classes are scheduled to be 45 minutes and they always started late and ended early. There is no personal touch with the kids or the parents; Master Garmany never took the time to learn my name. Every weekend there is another reason to pay $25, they are only after a buck. They will not take the time to give your child lessons on what to do when they start...they get thrown in with every one else and are expected to learn it that way. If there was more time taken on the kids to teach them the skills this place would not be such a revolving door. There is a lot of wasted time in this class! I too was really surprised with the reviews on here because when we started attending, they were very friendly and family oriented. After being here a year, we've learned alot about why the negative reviews are accurate. First off, the school has it's good and bad. The good is that they "did" have a great teacher who helped identify a student's strengths and weakness and helps the student based on their overall needs. The bad is that this teacher is no longer there. What I don't like about this place (after a year) besides the poor teachers' interactions, or lack of interactions, with the students is that one of the teacher was sleeping with another teacher there while she was a minor (17 yrs old). I also got billed twice the amount of what I normally pay and this was supposed to be the final payment and when I called the billing company, they informed me that school has to call them and tell them to stop and the school has me paying for another month. I've left voicemails to Mr. Garmany but still no reponse. Will be contacting the BBB. ***As a parent, unless your student has "star potential" in TKD, don't invest your time nor your money here. The staff is kind and respectful, Master Garmeny is nearly always present, and I've had no issues. Most importantly, my kid does not want to miss class. I started training under Master Garmany in 1992. I received my Black Belt in 1996. The way that he runs his business is 100% legit. I think that it is more fault of the parents for letting there children just "quit". Yes I understand that there are many families that are struggling right now, but is the age that we live in now children, adults and seniors need to know how to protect themselves especially living in Stockton.
