My favorite meal while visiting London. Friends had informed me already of this hot spot and so glad they did. I had an excellent meal, so much so that it made the 30 min outside wait in line, worth it. The hot Chai was served while we waited, which kept us warm in the cold, while we studied the menu. My heart strings were tugged when the menu informs that each meal they serve, they also donate a meal to 2 charities for school children, so lovely. The place is designed beautifully. No resy available unless party of 6 or more, which we didn't have. Food- I loved all my food. I got the lamb samosas. It comes with 3 and a yummy sauce. And the Prawn Koliwada, this is a bomb dish, spicy, well seasoned shrimp with a flavorful sauce, so yum. For my main, I got the cheese naan- which came with cheese and what seemed like a little sautéed veg inside, so interesting. Last, the grilled massal prawns, nice char, and good flavor. Service- Sasha was fantastic. Just attentive enough, and he was really busy! Gave detailed insight about great dishes on the menu and his favorites. One of the folks at our table had a lot of allergies, and he took the time to take the menu to the chef who cross out all items they couldn't eat due to the allergies. Now that's special service. I really wanted this to be a 5 star review based on all of the recommendations I received and the overwhelming amount of raving reviews on here but I really don't think it's worth the hype. My friend and I tried the lamb samosas, okra fries, chicken ruby, murgh malai and the cheesy naan. Overall the food was good, but really lacking spice for being south Asian cuisine. The okra fries were the most flavorful dish out of them all and were perfectly crispy with a nice light batter. The chicken ruby is perfect for the butter chicken lovers as it is thick and creamy but needed more flavor. The Murgh Malai was also nice but again, I had to add sauce for more spice and heat. Everything came out extremely fast but was cold, as if they have all the dishes prepared in the back and bring them out as they're ordered? The ambiance of the restaurant is okay, we were seated on the ground floor but tucked away next to the handicapped toilet and server station. We had rotating servers all night who were attentive but felt like they wanted to rush us out. Maybe if we were seated in the main area of the restaurant I wouldn't have felt like I was in a fast food restaurant? The chai was good, and our server honored the unlimited refills even though we just fell out of the time window which was definitely appreciated. Great food, great service, and great ambiance! We came in for a late lunch around 2 pm, and while there was no line, the place was still bustling with energy. We were seated on the lower level, which offered a nice, more intimate setting. We indulged in various dishes--sea bass, lamb chops, dal, and matar. Each dish was outstanding, and we'd happily order them all again. The wine and cocktail selection was impressive, complementing the meal perfectly. I particularly enjoyed the Padmini Negroni, which featured dark Indian cocoa and sweet pears soaked in Campari, vermouth, and dry gin, garnished with chocolate. In summary, Dishoom Covent Garden offers an exceptional dining experience with delicious food, attentive service, and a vibrant atmosphere. It was one of our favorite dining experiences in London. Great restaurant near Leicester square. They do take reservations but do strongly enourage walking. Decent line around 7pm on a Friday but the wait was no more than 15 mins and they offer chai and mint tea while you wait (the chai has a kick!). Once seated the server was quite attentive and full of recommendations. I settled on bun maska (more chai!) tandoori paneer (so good) and the daal with side of paratha. The paneer was amazing as was the paratha. The daal was solid but if space would try something else (although solid choice if you want daal) and bun maska good but a little too dense. I was worried that Dishoom was going to be one of those touristy chain restaurants that everyone raves about but haves you leaving disappointed. Well, thankfully, the hype around Dishoom is legit and resulted in one of the best Indian meals I have ever had. We arrived without reservations to a long line but only ended up waiting about 30 minutes. While we were in line the restaurant offered free Chai which was nicely milky and creamy with a light spice. Once seated we ordered a variety of dishes to share. I started with a Mango Lassi: Creamy and sweet with a rich mango flavor. I actually ordered a second because it was so addictive. For an appetizer we tried the Pau Bhaji. Soft airy toasted bread soaked up the flavors of mashed mixed veggies including rich tomato and crisp onions with a light spicy kick. We also had the Prawn Pathia. These prawns were meaty and tender with a nice char giving the dish a nice smokey flavor. The rich flavorful tomato masala was perfect for the prawns. The Chicken Berry Britannia had soft savory rice mixed with tender seasoned chicken and sweet cranberries. This was a nice combination of flavors. We also had the Raita. This milky cool yogurt dish was filled with crisp cucumber. A nice dish to cut through the spice of the other dishes. Finally, I always order Garlic Naan which was soft and savory and perfect for soaking up left over sauce. This was a phenomenal super flavorful meal. I recently visited Dishoom Canary Wharf with a friend on my trip to London. We were lucky to immediately get seated as it was a weeknight but I've heard stories where people have to wait for hours in a queue during rush time. My friend and I tried the vada pav and crispy okra fries for apps and we also tried Dal Makhani with rumali roti for main course. Vada pav was definitely good and it reminded me a lot of Bombay! Crispy okra was a good appetiser as well. The Dal Makhani wasn't that great in my opinion and I've had slightly better ones. Overall, you should definitely check this place if you want to try authentic Bombay cuisine. P.S. Dhishoom brings in the cuisine from old Irani cafes of Bombay to London. It may be mistaken as an Indian restaurant, but in reality it pays homage to Irani cafes that are very rare now in Bombay! read more

I flipped through my Dishoom cookbook recently eagerly anticipating my trip to London where I would get to eat these goodies. While I could make them at home, the cookbook has many recipes and all, something feels extra special (and I get to be lazy) when someone else cooks for me. Plus how will I know what it's supposed to taste like if I don't try the OG? That settled it. I penciled in two stops at Dishoom for my all too short trip to London. Visit 1, Breakfast: Even for being 8:30 on a rainy morning the restaurant was pretty busy. Not busy with a line, which you'll learn is standard for Dishoom dinners, but for a breakfast they were filling up nicely so make a reservation ahead of time if you can. To start our day hoofing it around sightseeing we ordered light. The Bun Maska is a must order. Bottomless chai AND a delicious buttered bun for dipping in it? Yes. The chai here is nicely spiced, so it's extra warming on a cold morning. For the savory food we ordered Kejriwal which is two fried eggs on chilli cheese toast. Amazing how something so simple could be so tasty. Same for the Bacon Naan Roll. The tomato element isn't just a simple ketchup, but a special tomato onion jammy deal that was perfect. It was a lighter breakfast that was a great intro to London dining and start to our day/trip. Visit 2, Dinner: Dinner at Dishoom had to happen but I didn't have a reservation and didn't want to stand in line for too long so we came on a Saturday at 2:40. There was a line! Granted it was a shortish one, so it wasn't a terrible wait. By 3:10 my party of two was seated and happily looking over the menu with some tough choices to make. Everything sounds tasty, but we somehow picked a few things. We ordered the Khichia & Chundo, House Black Daal, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Berry Britannia, Garlic Naan, Gunpowder Potatoes, and a Colaba Colada cocktail. As I feared, everything was in fact delicious, but we did pick our top three. The cocktail was a fun twist on a pina colada with some chai adding a unique flavor. The chicken tikka was tender and had a great flavor. They make theirs with vinegar instead of yogurt which was different. (Note this is not chicken tikka masala! The French chicks next to me sent their chicken back because they wanted sauce. If you want that- order the Chicken Ruby.) The black daal was the best. The flavor is incredibly rich, the sauce was silky, and I don't think I'll ever have a better bowl of anything in my life. A bowl of this daal and some naan? Heavenly. The décor, the ambiance, and the service? Lovely. Even at dinner when their sections are full nobody was left wanting for anything because the servers were on top of it all. In a crowded restaurant in a crowded city we were in a world of our own, gluttonously working our way through our spread. Eventually our empty plates were cleared away, a sad sign our delicious dinner was coming to an end. We headed back to our hotel, strolling down St. Martin's Lane noting the line for Dishoom had doubled in size, and talking about how incredible the meal was. I've been back home for months, still longingly looking through that aforementioned Dishoom cookbook. It won't be exactly the same, but it'll have to do for now. With some shiny servingware and the right spices I might be able to get a little of that magic at home. read more

Our friends came to London a month before us and recommended this restaurant. Their kids were not familiar with Indian food and loved it. We faced a long line and was quickly seated within 25 min. The waitress was fabulous and friendly. And when it says spicy on the menu, it's legit spicy. I usually ignore those descriptions but they were real at the Dishroom. The lamb kabobs and chicken tiki were tasty with a real fire kick. The Chicken Ruby was a very well made red curry. The garlic nan was cooked to perfection. Dishoom came highly recommended by friends as a must try when in London. They have 3 locations and I tried the one in Covent Garden. The line was horrendous, the first time we went it was going to be about an hour so we left, second time was about 30 minutes so we stayed. When you're near the front of the line they give you their famous house chai, which was MIND BLOWINGLY good. The flavor and warmth of the tea was comforting in the chilly weather. It was so good we asked for seconds. Their "grills" food has no sauce so keep in mind if you're ordering the chicken tikka. We opted for the chicken ruby which is a popular favorite and similar to the chicken tikka masala in the US. The meat was tender and sauce was superb. Definitely a must. We got the masala prawns, also 10 out of 10. And of course no Indian dinner is complete without garlic naan and basmati rice. Wanted to try their paneer but no room in the stomach. Ambiance was cozy and nice. Our server was sooooo awesome. This place definitely work their staff but he was so nice, responsive and made great recommendations. You know a restaurant is doing it right when you ask your friends, "What is a must eat in London?" and they all adamantly reply, "Dishoom!" First of all, this is unlike any Indian place I've been to in the US. This was an upscale and stylish two-level restaurant that reminded me of brunch places in Los Angeles rather than the family-owned restaurants with lunch buffets that I'm accustomed to. Secondly, Dishoom had many dishes that do not show up on my local Los Angeles Indian restaurant's menus. I'm glad that I went with a group and a local who knew what to order because I was overwhelmed by the options. We came around 5PM for as we didn't have a reservation and knew it was a popular place. Good thing we did because by the time we left, there was a lot of people waiting. We got: - PRAWN PATHIA - The prawns were tasty, but this was spicy. I could only eat a couple bites before I called it quits - PANEER ROOMALI ROLL - lightly fried roll with paneer - very good. - OKRA FRIES -- You must get this. Everyone must this. The line into the Dishoom restaurant was long and it was cold. A waitress handed out a warm spicy beverage to us and others waiting in line which gave us a hint of what we were about to experience. We agreed to eat at a low table and chairs and received earlier admission. We are from Hawaii and sometimes sit on the floor, sitting at a low table was not a big deal for us. We ordered okra fries, Tika chicken, and 2 orders of naan bread - 1 with cheese and the other with garlic - to eat with black Daal which is not really black, it was mashed lentils with spices with garlic a dip like consistency, all was so good. This place has quite the hype, so it was hard to pass up an opportunity to check out one of their locations. I didn't realize that each location has a different theme and we happened to go to the Parisian themed one. The restaurant itself is massive and the kitchen is a machine, pumping out dish after dish so the food is quick. The decor was on theme and a nice experience. The menu isn't the most extensive of Indian fare, but has a good mix. The chutneys that accompany the food were nice and very wide in their flavor profile. We had to get the house daal, as that is what everyone raves about. This was...fine. If I hadn't heard any hype at all I would have thought it was a rather nice dish, but it didn't totally wow me. We initially ordered naan for this but we were advised the roti is better, which was the way to go. We got the cucumber salad, which was refreshing. For meat, we got the lamb chops which were not my favorite. The char of the meat was a bit grainy and the flavoring just overall not the most interesting. Our waiter was very nice but also very busy because, again, this restaurant is a machine. This place deserves all of my ratings and all of my money without a doubt. To start off with the service, upon hearing about my partner's banana allergy and knowing that a lot of the grilled dishes were placed on banana leaves, she took some time to specifically check with the chef to see which dishes didn't require banana leaf usage, and reported back to us with extrenuous details. That move along was so wholesome that I was very touched. In terms of food, everything was on point, from the chicken ruby to the veggie samosas to the basmati kheer dessert. Everything was as good as I expected it to be. The chicken ruby had rich makhani sauce that wasn't too overwhelming and contained a good amount of chicken, and I didn't even have enough garlic naan. The basmati kheer dessert was probably some of the best I have ever had anywhere in the world. It wasn't too sweet, and the coconut milk rice and blueberry compôte combination was just heavenly. Other food was amazing as well, but these definitely stood out for me. Other than the food, the house chai was to die for. My partner and I easily had 8-9 cups altogether, and since it was before 6pm, we could do unlimited refills, so we did a couple, and about 10 minutes before 6pm, our server brought us a few additional cups, allowing us to have that one last piece of free experience, which, once again, was just wholesome! Highly recommended, and since today had heavy rain, the fact that the line outside waiting to dine in was still super long on a Wednesday afternoon says a lot about how good this place is. When my partner and I got there at around 4:45pm, the entire basement was already full. By about 6pm, the line basically extended to the end of the block. We tried the Dishoom house chaat, paneer tikka, sheekh kabab (so tender), chicken berry britannia, and the garlic and cheese naan. Everything was a bit spicer than we expected but we should have known better. Everything was good but the paneer was the crowd favorite! The 5-6 dishes were the perfect amount for 3 people. We've been to a couple locations so we were expecting to join the queue. We had a host come by to grab our names quickly after we joined and let us know it was about a 40 min wait. The line is deceiving so to hear just 40 was a surprise. During the time we waited, a hostess/host came by to hand out together tea or chai. That was a nice delight as it was a little chilly outside. In the 40 min, they came by twice and enough time to take the empty glass back. I liked that added touch for people waiting! Once we got inside, we had a friendly server that gave us a suggestion when we were ordering that we took him up on. Our food came out in good time and it was delicious. Apparently dishoom is one of those places that everyone talks about for their visit in London. I went with a group of four and we waited outside for half an hour. The wait wasn't too bad because the weather was nice. While we were waiting there was a server who came out and gave everyone on line some tea. That was a fun way to make the time go by faster. The interior was nicely decorated, and there were two levels of seating. The food itself was on the smaller portioned side, given that I was visiting from the US, but everything was very flavorful. The server did forget our naan so that was a little disappointing since one of the saucier dishes got cold by the time we got the naan. The best indian food experience I've ever had in my life! Not many restaurants have stopped me in my tracks like this one. This restaurant was recommended to me, so I fully expected to wait. It was a 45-minute wait, and the team is incredibly agile and proficient, making your wait time as exact as possible. By the time we got to the front of the line, they confirmed our name to ensure the party was still the same, and it had been 42 minutes. As for the food, there wasn't a single dish I will forget. From the garlic naan to the Ruby Chicken and even the side potatoes, everything was seasoned to perfection. The depth of flavor was special and memorable. The Covent Garden shrimp special was delicious, I'd go back to this location every single time for it. The rice pudding dessert is something I will think about for a very long time. I don't know how to express my love for this meal other than the fact that two days after this meal, I went to Cambridge to try the sister restaurant, Permit Room--spoiler alert: it was also stellar. We came here for breakfast right after opening at 9am on Sunday, and the dining room filled up quickly. Reservations recommended. Service was good, although slows as the restaurant gets busy. I ordered the house chai (unlimited refills!), their famous naan with butter, and the big Bombay which was a great, unique take on the traditional English breakfast. Each component of the big Bombay was thoughtfully put together. The masala beans had a nice curry spice. I do wish they had some sort of black pudding which is typical of English breakfast. The house chai was spiced nicely and not too sweet with a spicy kick. Overall, a great meal with the same consistent good service at all Dishoom locations. Small plates across the board overall but the flavor of every dish was delicious, and you can also expect your table to be packed out with a bunch of dishes because you have to try as much as you can. Have been a fan of Dishoom for breakfast for a long time now. Came here with a friend for dinner after several years. Between the two of us we got a lot of food- papad, okra fries, chilly chicken, paneer kebab, jackfruit biryani, prawn curry, black dal and naan. Everything was brilliant, my favorites however were the chilly chicken and the black dal...I'll be dreaming of it for time to come. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed. The gunpowder potatoes did not live up to their name at all. There was no gunpowder on the potatoes. In Indian food gunpowder means spicy. These potatoes were not spicy nor were they roasted. The potatoes had rough ground coriander seeds on them. As for the rest of the food, there was nothing outstanding about it. It was all basically pretty mid. The taste of the kulfi desserts could be attained at any Indian grocery store. The chocolate pudding was not molten but watery. The one good thing about this restaurant was the service which was very good. Would I wait hours outside for this food? No, absolutely not. Super yummy Indian food spot! Our friend raved about this place and took us on a Monday afternoon. There was a line outside but we were told it would be a 10 minute wait (which it was). Dishoom is a really overhyped place and that there are definitely more authentic and better service places out there. Since Dishoom highlights how authentic it is by serving Bombay cuisine, we were intrigued because we often get South Asian cuisine. We asked the waiter for recommendations and he said chicken tandoor and 'chicken ruby'. 'Chicken ruby' is their glorified way of saying butter chicken. The waiters favorites (which we got) were the house special and the blackened prawn dish which were the most expensive things on the menu. But when we received the dish we were really disappointed as it was 4 prawns that was 18 pounds. That is essentially a ridiculously overpriced an appetizer at this point. The naan is 5 pounds for two pieces and it really isn't special at all to be worth this much. I definitely believe before eating here, you should do some research on what is actually going in the dish. Most if not all of the dishes seem to be basic dishes that are disguised under long descriptions to make them seem fancy when in reality, a lot of the food seems unauthentic and overpriced basic food. The ambiance is nice but with the prices so high and the portions so small and basic, you are just paying for the ambience and not the actual food itself. After our meal we checked to make sure we could pay with cash. But unfortunately as we got our change back we were short changed. We understand as restaurants can get hectic and things happen. But when we asked for our proper change again, the manager had to come out and look for the coins with the waiter and unfortunately we were short changed again. Key word: reservation. Or, expect a 40+ minute line at the door even on a Tuesday night. But it's worth it! Fantastic prawn curry, roti, and mango lassi. Great atmosphere, and they were able to rush my ticket due to a 1-hr time constraint I had. The only thing I didn't care for was the plain rice; I felt it was a bit too al dente for me. Pro-tip: yes, there's a long line. But it moves very, very fast. Trust me. Wait is between 15-20 minutes for a full line. While waiting, I was treated to a complimentary warm Indian-Like oat milk tea. This was outstanding. And if you're not satisfied with the shot, I'd recommend ordering the full serving. I bet they use cardamom spice in the drink? Maybe? Bottom/line: Dishoom is indeed the most reviewed restaurant in London. With friendly service, decent food, the appeal is there, but when you receive the bill, I find it extremely difficult to justify the outlandish prices. Therefore, you're gonna pay a premium I submit is excessive. Surely there are other Indian restaurants in London that are more budget friendly, yet the atmosphere is not as upscale . I ordered the ruby chicken and a side of naan for my main course (spicy) Ruby chicken translates to chicken tikka masala everywhere else. With the 17 pound price tag , I'm surprised it doesn't come with the naan. Every item is indeed a la carte. The chicken was juicy, but I expected a bigger portion. The actual gravy honestly doesn't punch that hard. Seems pretty average. Anything I write here will not do nearly enough justice to the incredible meal I had at Dishoom. The hype for this restaurant is big and sometimes, that can be a detriment to inflated expectations, but what I ate was even better than anything I could have imagined. First off, make a lunch reservation. The lunch menu is the same as the dinner menu, but they don't take reservations at dinner time. Maybe you like standing in line for fun? Well, I don't. So, I made sure to have a lunch reservation so that I wouldn't have to wait at all. We were immediately seated! We ordered the following items: Chicken Ruby - their version of a butter chicken and my favorite thing we ate Chicken Biryani - a seasoned and flavorful rice dish that came with many pieces of chicken House Black Daal - absolutely delicious. Lentils were cooked so soft that even as a non-lentil fan I enjoyed it. Raita - yogurt dip that paired perfectly with all of the dishes especially to provide a cool to the spices Plain Naan - perfect for slopping up all the sauce on your plate Everything was absolutely incredible. My only complaint was that my stomach couldn't hold even more food. I could've eaten this endlessly it was so delicious! I need to come back to London even if it's just for this meal! read more

While definitely overhyped and expensive, you are paying for the ambiance and service. It was a 15 minute wait on a Thursday night- the long line moves very fast and they give you chai while waiting. (Also outdoor heaters when it's cold). Inside, the restaurant is massive and very loud. I got the chicken makhani, the famous black daal, garlic naan, and my friend got the grilled prawns. The makhani was decent, a bit sweet but wanted more flavor. Very generous portion of chicken. The daal was good, also wish it was more flavorful - maybe my expectations were too high. Garlic naan was too burnt & didn't have enough of a garlic punch. Also wish they were more generous with the naan. Overall, not even close to the best Indian food I've had.
