I heard all of the hype about District Kitchen. So I decided to give it a try. First I must say, make sure you make a reservation especially if it's on the weekend. This place is tiny. Very compact if you don't try and reserve a booth. The service was on point. The waiter we had was very attentive and took our order as soon as we sat. Great start. We ordered drinks and it kind of took some time. Once we got them, I noticed why it took long to get the drinks. This place caters to being more on the aesthetics. The drinks were great and beautifully decorated! That was a PLUS! Other than that, the food was okay. Nothing really special. They dress everything up really nice and make it photo worthy. Their instagram videos advertised "unhinged Halloween cocktails" and I ordered 2 of their Halloween cocktails that seems rather put together. I got the cocktail that I think on the menu it said their would be sparklers or something with the presentation, so I guess I got my hopes up. A lot of their social media videos had bubbles, smokes, fire, sparklers, but my drink just came with smoke. It still looked pretty good, and tasted nice. The menu is huge. You can do a more 'Chinese style' dinner by sharing large entree items or you can get your own combo plate. I got the combo plate with 2 crab rangoons and general tso chicken. Food is pretty basic (well I did choose something basic haha). I've been here once around 8 years ago before they renovated to become this more modern Asian style. So I ended up at District kitchen this evening with a friend and we had a lovely dinner. Service was A1. All the waitresses and hosts are extremely nice and attentive. We ordered the Szechuan Fish, which was a surprisingly perfectly spiced version with big chunks of white fish and what I believe some kind of mushrooms with a little bit of lotus flour lots of heat. Of course you have to get a bowl of white rice to enjoy all that savory Szechuan sauce. in addition, we ordered the shrimp dumplings, broccoli and garlic sauce, which was delicious. They all played well overall fantastic feast. I do have to say that it was actually extremely convenient for parking as they validate for the small parking lot around the corner. I found this to be added, which would bring me back and time again as it is almost impossible to find parking in downtown Malden now. The restaurant is always has great music and a nice vibe. The dishes are on the higher priced side, but it seems that they use quality products and ingredients and I believe it's worth every penny. I definitely will enjoy coming here over the years as I have in the past. In the past, I've had a great soup dumpling here which I would suggest everyone should try at least once. Went here with a large group on a Saturday night. Fun vibe with lots of social worthy floral decorations. Some TVs for watching the game. Very tight spacing between tables making it hard to get around. I got the mai tai and it truly was awful- weird mix of juice, no rum noticeable. Others liked the espresso martini. Really enjoyed the crab rangoon and tomahawk steak but had no knife so thankfully it was very tender and easy to rip. Once 9 hit, It became a club with a loud dj. First off I have to say the service was so fast and so efficient. The drinks were amazing not too over powering and just the perfect mix of mixer to alcohol ratio. We got the Xiao Long Bao dumplings to start and they were so flavorful and just the right size I could eat them all night. I got the General Gao Chicken which every Chinese restaurant has their version, but this one was honestly one of the best for the area. It had a bold flavor without being too much. The beef and mix vegetables was super tender beef and to our surprise not over cooked vegetables which seems to be a problem everywhere else but here. The House Special Fried Rice was a decent mix of flavors, but was definitely a lot for one dish. I wish the fried rice was fried more because I feel like the flavor would have really popped more with a little crunch of the rice. The was shocked with how small the restaurant was given the pictures I'd seen, and it was kind of loud for such a small space. IDK what happened to District Kitchen. Did they get a new owner or something? The most recent menu has been way pared down. A lot of the past interesting stuff is now gone, left are Americanized Chinese food and pricey instagrammable cocktails (which is fun - but for the record, does not actually taste that good). Just went back for the first time in a few years. It's definitely a very festive atmosphere- with the music, decorations, and colorful drinks with little ducks floating inside. The food was all great! My taro cocktail was a good concept (my favorite boba flavor) but too strong. I really enjoyed the soup dumplings. They had a nice sauce that came with it, that's a must to accompany it. The other dish that hit it out of the park was the beef and string beans. Definitely ask for hot oil. The food is pretty standard, but their drinks are quite unique! The crab rangoons are folded as triangles instead of the usual squares, which I prefer because of the filling ratio. The dandan noodles, beef noodle soup, and beef brisket stew are what you would expect. I was most excited about the XXL soup dumpling, but it was hard to eat to get the best experience. The dumpling was left with more of a thick sauce after having to sip some of the soup out with a straw. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Thursday night dinner. I came here with friends the weekend before Halloween and all the wait staff was dressed up and the decor was cute and spooky. The music was blasting kind of loud so it was hard to hear each other, but we enjoyed vibing to the throwback 2000s hits. They had special Halloween cocktails that were really unique! We got the spicy beef noodle soup, xiao long bao, and and eggplant stir fry. It was all perfect. No notes. My favorite was the noodle soup--the broth was delicious, the noodles were thick and chewy, and it was nice and traditionally simple. But we were honestly shocked because the vibes of the place do not scream "authentic and delicious Chinese food." It's heavily westernized with trap music blasting, colored lights flashing, and a bar taking up one of the walls. As my bf put, it felt like eating dinner in a club. It was off putting eating with Megan Thee Stallion blasting ngl. There were also large screens playing various sports game. To start, this place is EXPENSIVE. Good food, don't get me wrong. Portion sizes are okay for such expensive prices. We were here during the holiday season and saw that some of the drinks were charged $40+ and realized it was because of the appearance (they use cool kitchenware shaped like Santa and sleighs and stuff for cocktails). We ended up just getting the xiao long baos, fried shrimp in mayo sauce, and the squid ink pasta. I was not full after and regretted not getting something more filling (but then again it would have been more expensive so idk). Ambience - this place was also so loud. Granted we were here on a Friday night. But, it was only a little bit after 7pm, and the music was blasting so loud I could barely hear or talk to my friend the whole night. It wasn't a party scene either. Everyone around us were other families or groups of friends, not like it was a party scene (though it felt like it because of the loud blasting club like music). We had to wait until moments between songs playing to shout to hear each other. Service - the service is amazing. This is really the only reason I am rating it 3 stars. We had a server who was friendly. Food came fast too. They didn't rush us at all. They also checked on us a lot and always made sure our waters were refilled. Overall - good food, portion sizes are not the best though. Service is wonderful. Atmosphere is so loud on a Friday night. I feel like this place really blew up on TikTok recently and I wonder if that's why they upcharged so many of the dishes. I know Boston is expensive but this place is pretty expensive. read more

Overpriced trendy Chinese food that is somewhat Americanized. I came here when they first opened and wasn't quite impressed, which is why we never came back. We ordered take out on Thanksgiving, desperately looking for wonton soup since my father in law was sick. I think it's something that they likely whipped up and charged $16. I appreciate them being creative but I wish I had taken a picture of it. It was the saddest wonton soup I've ever seen. No garnishing whatsoever. The broth had soggy fried onion sediment on the bottom of the container, and wontons that were likely just their regular steamed dumplings (lacking the wonton wrapping) that they packaged separately. Dumplings are a perfectly fine replacement except for the lack of flavor. The soup and dumplings were both very bland and I'm not generally keen on salty like some ramens. I even ordered a quart of duck sauce for my FIL and he charged me $16 for a quart of their "house made" duck sauce with fresh apples. Because it was for my FIL, I shamelessly accepted the $16 price tag which in hindsight I regret. The only positive thing I would note is, the ambiance. It's a small restaurant but has a modern feel. They also have bar seating with TVs. Also their xiao long Bao's are decent but wouldn't come back here for them. read more

Also, this isn't tapas, but my entree, from the entree menu, identical to All Seasons Table, came first. Seems like they want to shuffle people out asap.... Something isn't right. I think this was the first time I've had soup dumplings since I've come to Boston so I was pretty pleased to eat some yummy soup dumplings. They charge for rice by the bowl (I think this is normal based on a few other Chinese restaurant experiences in Boston, but I'm really not used to it). District Kitchen has a nice atmosphere inside and it would be a fun place to hang out and eat after work. Soup dumplings: Definitely recommend. Small, juicy, flavorful, and even better with the dipping sauce. I could definitely eat these again and again. Minced beef soup: Would not recommend. Their version was more watery than any other minced beef soup/West Lake beef soup I've tried. The beef wasn't even minced; they were tough little strips I didn't enjoy eating. The whole soup lacked flavor and I noticed a strong flavor to the beef that I didn't like. Normally, I barely taste the soft minced beef in minced beef soup. Salt and pepper (fried) fish filet: Might recommend. These weren't crispy at all like they should be; the filets were borderline soggy.
