Though there was huge variety of items, I was disappointed. The place was highly disorganized and did not look like the pictures online. The compartments/smaller rooms near the entrance where the clothes were (versus a big open layout) contributed to the cluttered feel. Nevertheless, it has a lot of different things from CDs/DVDs, vinyl LPs, games, furniture, housewares, electronics, and books. I was on the hunt for some books and came here. There are 2 designated rooms for books, but they are not organized except the kids books. I was able to find some, a Mad Libs book and tarot cards. My friend bought a few records for 50 cents each. All in all, we found some good things. They had more things to explore. I will save for the next visit. Diversity Thrift is an amazing welcoming space! The store itself is large with a vast amount of items ranging from more boutique to normal thrift store items. The value is pretty standard with some items especially the artwork being slightly higher than other places but their accessories, kitchenware, books, and craft items are such a bargain. The service workers are always super nice and great conversationalists. This place could best be described as organized chaos, great for those who love to sort and rummage for their finds but not the best for someone looking for stuff super specific. This place is basically Goodwill at antique store prices. They had a few good items, but I could not justify the price on items that were donated to them for free. Examples: $5 for a small wooden bead bracelet, $20-$35 for medium sized framed prints (that I really only wanted for the frame, the prints were nothing special), $375 for a leather couch, $125 for a chaise (Ikea Kivik), $75 for a small wooden chair, $4 for a silver tin plate that had spots all over it. At a vintage/antique store where the items were curated, I could maybe understand the prices, but it was donated and the inside is organized just like a Goodwill, very chaotic and lots of areas that have the same things. I had just come from Target, and even Target had brand new items for cheaper (frames of the same size as the ones I was looking at were $20, for example). If you're looking for furniture at a slightly lower price than brand new and want delivery options (unsure if there's an extra cost for delivery), then this place might be worth it, but I have seen many of the same items in the same condition on FB marketplace for cheaper. I do appreciate that they donate to good causes such as Harry Potter book sales going to trans youth and they had a small food pantry at the front. Their mission and the furniture selection (not the prices) is what prevents it from being a one star. read more

For all you thrifty sisters and misters out there, DT may be just the ticket! Whether shopping for a unique item or donating for a community cause, Diversity is a beloved neighborhood haunt! And yes, shopping here can be a bit haunting if your new to thrifting and sifting. It's not the most organized shop in town, but what it lacks in neatness, it makes up for in volume. So much stuff! They really try to make a space for various departments: furniture, sports, electronics, clothes, appliances, household, dishes, jewelry, collectibles, books, records, etc. However, most of the inventory is just piled on tables in a big mound, or strewn helter-skelter on overcrowded shelves. The furniture section has some nice pieces, but are displayed haphazardly. They stock tons of glassware and dishes...you may find some seasoned antiquers scouring the menagerie to, perhaps, resell at their own store. And don't be surprised if you hear a breakable kitsch, curio, knick-knack or bric-a-brac clatter to the floor, it's easy to knock things over if you're not über careful! If you have the patience of Job, you may venture into the clothing room, although I find the scattered shoes and jumbled racks too overwhelming for my taste. Should you see something you like, you'd better nab it, because I went in to buy a nifty side table that looked like a stack of books, but someone else snagged it before me! Lesson learned! Now, I must say, the prices are quite reasonable and the folks at the counter have been known to haggle. They take care to wrap delicate things nicely and are pleasant gents. Aside from the items, there's very limited parking and everywhere inside smells like moth balls, and not like normal thrift store moth balls but STALE moth balls. Also the staff has always been rude. I love Diversity thrift! I was super happy this morning to see their new, bold signage saying that masks are Required of everyone. So I was bummed out when I saw a handful of folks not wearing one. I told one employee that I was happy for the change, but that it seemed they weren't enforcing it. They didn't reply or seem to care. Later I asked another if they were enforcing their policy, after a half eye roll, they said they would say something if they saw it. They said it as an unmasked person was literally 5 feet away. So I pointed that out, then they asked them to wear a mask. That person said I just want to pay and leave, and was obliged. I then told the worker that there were others in the store not wearing masks like a person who had been in the store the whole half hour that I was there. No response. Then I saw that unmasked person pay and leave, never being asked to mask. Come on Diversity! What's the point of having the policy if you aren't going to enforce it? It's there for a reason, to protect people from a deadly virus. So if you don't enforce it, you aren't protecting your customers or workers. I really hope you start enforcing your own mask policy so that we can all feel safe while trying to support your great organization. read more

They have their own parking lot. They also have an all gender bathroom. This place is huge! They have everything here and I have bought a ton of quality work clothes. I'm not big on thrifting but my friends took me to this shop because it supports the LGBTQ population in the RVA, and I will always support my fellows. Anyway, it's a bit out of the way, but hard to miss. They have EVERYTHING you could want and at decent prices too. Clothing, housewares, heck, even a tarot deck was up for grabs when I was there. I didn't find anything to purchase, but my friends got themselves a few shirts and a Lego book on 8 William Shakespere plays. Pretty cool for $8 read more

A large and well-stocked thrift store in Scott's Addition. I've personally purchased a big combo record player and a nice wooden dresser from this store, as well as several books and other trinkets. An excellent thrift store with a great selection, and great prices as well! I have been here a number of times, both alone and with friends/family (sorry, I don't always remember to check in!), and it has consistently been an excellent experience. Rooms full of books, clothes, furniture, housewares, and other items await you no matter what your tastes are. The huge variety of what you see here is part of the fun: you may come across a hand-carved wooden glassware cabinet, a strange set of unique mugs, that CD you've been looking for for ages, and an old LP of a band no one has ever heard of... and that's all in one visit! Service here is generally good and friendly. I have had good experiences every time I've come, and I should also mention that when I was organizing a coat drive for the Richmond homeless population, I reached out to the main person here and he was incredibly generous and gave us a number of coats to distribute. On that note, this place clearly desires to give back to the city, and participates in a number of events benefitting locals and local organizations. Prices here are fair, and there's always a sale of some sort going on. On my latest visit here, the sale happened to be FREE VHS tapes. Granted, I didn't have much use for them, but who knows, I'm sure some people could put them toward a good cause somehow. Parking here is a bit of a challenge since their little lot only has about 15 spaces in it. You can park on the street next to it, though those spaces fill up quickly too. You'll find something, though: it's an industrial area, always space if you're willing to walk a little bit! I'm a big fan of Diversity Thrift, as you can see. If you're in need of some new kitchenware or furniture or clothes to round out your wardrobe, check here first! They are the best thrift store in the area! They always have tons of furniture, tons of books, and random Knick-knacks. I love them because they also support the Gay Community Center. In addition to that, they also work with other non profits and allow us to borrow items and return them. They also have quarter sales on versions different weekends, tag discounts, and book sales! I usually frequent this location & have half way decent visits but today..whew! I was dropping off several bags of clothing & children's accessories at the door. There was a huge truck blocking the door and all the employees except for 2 were all huddled around talking. Another man pulled up and someone quickly went to help him bring his items out the car..I was right behind him, and the employees just watched me taking all my items out the car. No one offered to help, no one came to grab them to take them inside. I had to stand literally 2 feet away from them w a few bags in hand & all my items on the sidewalk and just stare at them talk for a few minutes before someone even acknowledged me. Unless you are their version of 'diverse' they will be rude to you. They don't honor their own advertising signs in the store and pricing is too high and inconsistent otherwise. Store is dirty, items are dirty and haphazardly arranged. No matter how polite you are to them, they will be rude to you if you don't fit 'their' profile. Ironic for a place called 'Diversity Thrift.' They will also insult you at the register if you ask questions and I was told that 'if I can't pay their thrift store prices, I should just leave.' Their words, not mine. I have NEVER been so insulted in a thrift store IN MY LIFE!! The question was about their signage which of course the uppity woman in the front would not honor, and the lack of signage or prices in other rooms. I was checking out with someone else and this woman (childish woman I might add) came from some back corner to cause a problem with me and I am not even sure why. Everyone else was pushy, but seemed ok and generally helpful. But THAT woman, OMG! I don't have time or energy to waste with uppity entitled 'be-atches' who attack and insult me when I am trying to wisely spend money I don't readily have and get a decent price as advertised. And I was trying to support their business. I had a full cart and was planning to still buy the items that weren't affected by the erroneous and unhonored 'sale.' But the lady who decided to be an asshat basically made me walk out. I don't have to drive to Timbuktu, RVA to go to a thrift store. She didn't want to be bothered to have me check out, so she bullied me instead. And she wasn't even the one at the register!! Also take your plastic sheeting down at the registers, people. COVID is over (and has been for awhile now) and you're making your customers do all the work while you apparently bully and harass them...from the other side of your plastic fortress. I only had the opportunity to call out one item at the register (remember the customer has to do ALL the work, here) before the hate spewed from this other random lady who appeared out of nowhere. The lady even had the audacity to continue to bully me as I tried to peacefully leave the store. WTH?! I am so disappointed in a store that used to be an RVA icon. This single parent of 3 will be buying things for my children elsewhere! Oh, and one of the reviews here said they have bed bugs!! So that eliminates purchasing anything fabric or wood! (Bugs can hide in paper, too, so...) Dodged that one! Omg! Additional note: parking lot is tight and cramped and the surrounding area is sketchy and isolated and does not seem particularly safe, be aware of your surroundings if you decide fighting the staff is worth the effort to buy crap at this store. Think typical pawn shop area, without the pawn shop. Abandoned buildings, creepy hotels, too close to the interstate, you get the picture. Oh and I take back my 'icon' comment, because based on reviews on here, Diversity Thrift never was very good, I was misled to have any sort of positive impression of this place. Plenty of thrift potential! Take an allergy pill for dust and budget time to hunt for those good finds. Lots of wares of varying quality and in varying conditions, so inspect closely for stains and tears. Can't imagine the amount of work involved in seasonally pruning inventory. Clothing is sorted by approximate type and/or color (including a sad beige rack of $75 old-fashioned wedding dresses), inevitably disarrayed by relentless throngs of shoppers. Shoe room is quite limited in comparison. Half the furniture isn't in very good condition, or could be with some effort towards refinishing, but you can definitely furnish a kitchen with essentials on a tight budget; dirt cheap holiday cookie cutters, but good tongs/rolling pins/garlic presses don't stay on the shelves for long. You can arrange to pick up your bulkier items in the future for a fair deposit, refundable within a day. read more

Diversity is an excellent place for vintage furniture! The prices are a bit high, but if you are lucky enough to find an item without a price on it, you may be able to land yourself a steal. I wonder if you could negotiate tagged items. Anyhow, tons of beautiful furniture, a good bit of it in pretty good condition. You will find lots of lovely gems for reupholstery. There is also a great selection of throw pillows and linens. It's great if you are making a pillow because for just $2, you can just buy a pillow from here to cover instead of buying a pricey form. Even the massive sofa pillows are dirt cheap. Lots of selection in clothing, although not the best in the area, but it also wasn't what I came for, so I didn't search for long. You will find tons and tons of selection of just about anything your hear desires here. The trip is certainly worth your while. The workers and volunteers are very helpful and friendly, and pickup service is highly efficient. They work like a well-oiled machine. I strongly suggest coming with a truck because you're bound to catch a nice find in furniture. read more

They have an amazing selection of books, probably the biggest I have ever seen in a thrift store. Their kitchen selection is great. My favorite part about this place is just knowing that all of the proceeds go to such a worthy cause. (I lied, I actually have more than one favorite thing about this place) The second thing I love is that the employees will schedule a free furniture pick up. This is probably the largest thrift store in the city of Richmond and it's located right off of the I-95 for easy access. The parking lot is a little on the smaller side but there is plenty of street parking as well. You can find all sorts of things and all for very reasonable prices as you would expect at a thrift store. Every category had it's own place/location so it made finding certain items easier but if you don't really have anything you're looking for it may a little overwhelming. There's a pretty large selection of furniture such as: sofas, recliners, dining tables/set/chairs, desks, dressers, and sometimes you may be able to find a bed set. There's also a small room for outdoor gear and I spotted: golf clubs, skis, miscellaneous front yard toys/activities, roller blades and bikes. The condition of many of the items also varies based on the condition it was donated so it can really be a hit or a miss with any item you purchase from here. But I did notice that there is a 30 day money back guarantee for electronics ONLY if it ends up not working or you just want to return it. They also have a selection of mens/womens clothing and accessories. Diversity Thrift also sells books, record albums, CDs, DVDs and video tapes. I think this is a great place to check out if you're trying to find something "vintage" or hard to find items that most modern stores don't carry anymore. Diversity Thrift: An oasis for the experienced thrifter, a nightmare for the casual shopper. Last weekend I fell into the "casual shopper" category and was quite frankly overwhelmed by Diversity Thrift. I love how every item category has it's own room, but the problem started for me when I went into each room. There was just way too much stuff to sort through for my style, especially in the women's clothing section. It would have taken me all day to find something that I liked. I realize that that comes with the territory when thrift shopping, however the dust and general smell of the building do not. Those two things were a big hindrance to my overall experience and my allergies. I originally went to Diversity Thrift to look for a piece of furniture. I have to say that I was pretty impressed with their selection. This would be a wonderful place to buy a couch for an apartment or an office desk. Unfortunately, I didn't find the piece that I was looking for, but I will definitely go back there in the future. For the experienced thrifter I wholeheartedly recommend shopping here. I've been shopping at this thrift store for quite a few years and have found great odds and ends. There have been times I've found an item without price sticker and the cashier gave me a good deal. However, I found out that the items are marked with a price the employee/volunteer would pay for it. So if there isn't a tag, the employee/volunteer could put ANYthing. I've personally seen three or more of the same or similar items with different price tags. There's a set standard for a few things like sheets and clothes but everything else is a free-for-all. This is not going to deter me at all! I am definitely going to keep shopping there, just with more price point awareness. read more
