Its northern rival port, Le Havre, overshadowed it centuries ago, leaving the charming 15th-17th century houses and buildings that make it so remarkable and popular today. It is an atraction for travelers and holidaymakers both foreign and domestic. It has attracted many notable artists (Monet, Satie, Boudin, etc) with its laid back charm. Small cruise ships and Seine River cruises are able to use the port, but larger ships dock at Le Havre.

We wandered miriad streets well off the tourist route and found several half-timbered neighborhoods. No wonder Monet and Boudin enjoyed painting here. Lots of great restaurants serving moules, crepes, and local seafood surround the quaint harbor.

More popular and happier than neighbour Deauville which is for the better-endowed and more…read moresnobbish. The beach is not as nice, but the food choices are better here. Go to the quay near the casino, and have lunch at one of the stalls. You pick the freshly picked seafood and they will prepare it for you - gambas, lobsters, crabs, oysters, prawns, clams, etc - delicious, fresh, fun, and much cheaper than at restaurants.

We then walked through town and got to see the famous clock, and all the historic buildings. Some of the buildings are so old and lean so far you wonder how people feel safe living in them! We were there on a Sunday, so not much was open, but we did enjoy popping into a few stores, and even had to visit the McDonald's that was in a historic building! They have an "umbrella alley" here that has umbrellas with historic paintings on the underside which was cool to see. We really enjoyed our afternoon in this historic community.

Today at the suggestion of Mrs G, we decided to chill and just walk around the center of the city of Rouen. We almost missed this magnificent city! Tomorrow to Versailles and we must visit Mont Saint Michelle, but after today we WILL spend another day here. Everywhere you look there is beauty and structures that simply make you say Wow! And then there is the shopping and the countless eateries. Definitely put it on your itinerary and enjoy :)
