We wandered into this place since we were WAY too early to a birthday dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the place. The happy hour was amazing. $2.25 wells and $2 PBR, Hamms, and something else. All the beer is in a can which makes it simple to pick from and the server was friendly and helpful. We walked out the door with several drinks and hardly any cash out of our pockets. I came to Dixie Tavern for a bachelorette party. We enjoyed the private VIP room upstairs which was nothing more than a semi closed off room overlooking the dance floor below. All the same, we felt privileged and had the convenience of the "no wait" bar upstairs. Being from a Tennessee college town, I was no stranger to the "good ol boy" crowd that seemed to dominate the bar that night. The music was fun and the crowd and atmosphere was a great place to get silly with the girls. If dancing isn't your thing and you're more into the theatrics of people watching they have ropes over the bar top that are meant for spinning and dancing with. The lady bartender will periodically hop on and do a "sexy" dance. They aren't the only ones Coyote Uglying it up there. Our bachelorette party along with several others throughout the night were allowed to make a special debut up there. It was a pretty good time prancing our dangerously high heeled shoes and making fools of ourselves trying to mimic the moves the bartender made with the ropes. Went here for the very first time at 7pm on a Saturday during a Halloween bar crawl. I had fun and karaoke was great! However, $4.75 for a CAN OF COORS LIGHT is unacceptable. Will most likely avoid this place in the future and frequent one of the many other venues around this one. read more

Weirdest experience I've had in a long time. So, last weekend I go alone. I'm a fairly handsome 6-foot, 175 lbs, 45 year old guy in good physical condition. By no means do I carry myself like a mean guy. So, I'm standing at the bar waiting for a drink when this short, maybe 5'6" African-American bouncer, who is built like an NFL running-back, comes up behind me and wraps both his hands snugly around my biceps and nudges me aside so that he could approach the bar. OK, no problem with that. Then an hour later, again he approaches behind me and places his hand on my bicep to nudge me out of the way. OK, no problem with that. And then about an hour later, again he firmly places both hands on my biceps and nudges me out of his way. Now, I was alone, only sipping on a beer and watching the scenery. I was sitting alone most of the time. But once I walked out the door, I realized this guy put his hands on me three times!! I mean, isn't that weird? None of the other bouncers did that...and there must be at least 15 in the club. So, WTF? Was he fantasizing about or mentally rehearsing taking me down in case of an "emergency?" Was he copping a feel of my biceps? I mean, I really felt like that was inappropriate. Who wouldn't? That's impressive that the guy is huge and intimidating and gets paid for it, but for God sake KEEP YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF THE PATRONS! It's just really creepy. read more

My girlfriend reserved the "VIP" section for her birthday which included her name being up front on the billboard. We get there the night of and ask them about it and they try and not let us in. After about a half an hour of pleading our case the "manager" wouldn't let her in because he didn't like her attitude. We paid for the VIP and he wouldn't let us in. After pleading with him for half an hour they finally led us upstairs. When we get upstairs they wanted to cut my girlfriend off, when she was very upset. We were promised an extravagant affair only to be deceived with an upstairs bar that carried only well liquor but put them on shelves to look "classy". I love Dixie! This is one of my go to spots in DT PDX. I always seem to forget they are closed on Mondays though! Opens at 4pm and have happy hour food and drink specials from 4-7 every day. The bartenders are amazing. Mariah, Taylor and Crystal are my top. If any of them are bartending you will have a great time and experience. The food is great and the cook will sometimes whip up something off menu to test out with the few patrons who get there at 4 when they open as well as the opening staff. You get a country bar feel but also a club kind of feel on Friday and Saturday nights. Karaoke 2nights a week, giant game night Wednesdays. Been here a couple times, only on weekend nights. I don't know, this isn't really up my alley as you might say, but I don't have the level of hatred that some of you have :) Definitely an odd mix on what they are going for though. It's as if in their head they want a cowboy/rocker bar but yet the fratboys and sorority girls took over so now there isn't a coherent theme at all. I mean one minute you are listening to Sweet Home Alabama and then they are playing Soulja Boi or something...wtf? Budweiser drink specials (on a Saturday night), but then they have the jello shot girls walking around. I guess this is a great place for people who can't decide if they would rather go to Dukes or Barracuda? Drinks seem cheap and strong to me though...the only thing that I could say really bugs me about the place is the DJ that came straight from a strip club (can't you just picture that guy saying "now gentleman, please remember to tip your dancers" in that cheeseball voice that every single one of them seems to use?). Took it and showed it to some other workers (I actually think one was a manager, some ugly bald dude) and they all laughed and stated that they could tell it was not real. It's fine don't let me in, but don't break my ID. FYI not a fake. Asshole. If you're that concerned about under age patrons, get an ID scanner, not every one carries two forms of ID when they're bar hopping. Oregon has some weird laws where you can't order a two drinks at the same time and if you have a drink in your hand you can't order another. Ok, I don't know what it's like when this place is busy but when we got there it was during Happy Hour mid-week and totally empty. We had just finished passing out blankets to the homeless lining downtown Portland during a snow storm, and walked in blindly hoping for a cheap drink and quick eats. This is a great place to go if you have a big group of friends. The cover is, or was $7, but it's well worth it.
