Our friends got married a few years ago and I remember having the best time at their wedding - a lot having to do with the music. So when the time came for us to book a DJ for our big day, I knew I wanted to use the same DJ ... that man ended up being DJ Sota. And then he delivered exactly what he promised, a fun and exciting wedding. More details - We just had our wedding this past weekend. When we were putting everything together for our wedding, our (my) biggest worry was making sure we would have a fun and upbeat wedding. I hate throwing parties because I'm nervous people will not have a good time. DJ Sota was our first call, and I was dreading going through the process of trying to pick the right DJ. From the start of our call he put us at ease with well-tuned questions, professional demeanor, and good nature. As soon as the initial call ended, we knew we wanted to go with him. We ended up doing our due diligence and looking around some more, but we kept comparing all our other initial calls with DJ Sota's. After booking with him the process was fairly simple. We went with the silver package and added 4 dance lights. We had to fill out a detailed worksheet and do one other call to go over the worksheet. With some clarifying emails in between. The venue we had was on the smaller side. It switched from an outside ceremony to an inside reception, back to outside for dancing. He brought all the necessary equipment and because of the changing between events he had to alter his initial setup. Which seemed to be no issue. During the wedding DJ Sota was great to work with and explained everything that we needed to know. In our excitement, my wife and I did mess up a cue for our grand entrance but he was very gracious with us and was able to adapt on the fly. We also did an anniversary dance after our first dance. For the first dance he incorporated an edited song we gave him and it turned out great! The anniversary dance was almost an issue because my grandparents were reluctant to have the spotlight at the last second. We had to alter that plan quicky and he was able to accommodate the change. As an MC he ended up being able to get my grandparents to come out onto the dance floor with us and they had an amazing time! They said they hadn't partied like that in decades. The music selections were perfect, and the guests have been commenting on how great the music was for the past few days. A lot of people danced for a good amount of the time we had, and the energy was kept up throughout the night. It was exactly what we had hoped for. We interviewed several DJs in the LA area before meeting and signing with DJ Sota. We were instantly impressed by how professional he was; he showed up to our first meeting with a laptop to showcase prior weddings at our venue. He had great insights about weddings at our location, which was super useful when we worked through room layout and reception logistics. Hiring the right DJ was our top priority after selecting the venue. We wanted to keep the dance floor packed the entire night. DJ Sota delivered! He gave us a detailed worksheet to plan our playlist and "filler music". Though we were very specific about our playlist, we were confident that DJ Sota understood our taste and vibe. I can't say enough good things about Dakota! We had to postpone our local wedding in Moorpark in 2020, and ended up booking a place up at Bass Lake in 2021. Even though it was typically out of his range for service he made the adjustment with no issues. On our call with him a few weeks before the wedding he spent over an hour with us going over the timeline, making sure we weren't rushed - which he obviously had a lot of experience in! On the day of he MCed so smoothly for all the speeches and announcements. For music, my fiancé and I really did not give a ton of guidance as to what to play - kind of, know what we like when we hear it type people. Dakota felt out the crowd and played amazing music all night that fit our vibe. We've been to some weddings where the music was just ehh, but I received SO MANY compliments about the music! I was so excited when I learned that Dakota would be the DJ at our wedding after postponing (it was originally another DJ with his company). He was accommodating throughout several postponements due to COVID. My husband and I enjoyed him the day of. He was great with keeping the timeline on schedule. Leading up the wedding he was involved in the timeline. When I shared my timeline with him, his suggestions came off as rude. They were useful and often things I hadn't thought of, but the way he said things came off pushy and bordering on rude. As an already stressed out bride, I would have appreciated a more friendly and understanding approach to critiquing our timeline. It definitely added to my stress. He visited the location beforehand and decided to setup under the patio cover. The day of, he setup in a different location which was in the sun and TOOK AN UMBRELLA FROM A GUEST TABLE even though he was told not to. All he had to do was ask for an umbrella, as we had plenty. But to take an umbrella from a guest table with all elderly guests, I just cannot understand why. My mom, mother of the bride, also asked for him to add a "9 month" to the anniversary dance as my brother and sister in law were married 9 months ago. He then mentioned "anyone married a month or longer" to which my mom again requested 9 months and he IGNORED HER. I wish I had known these things during the wedding. When my dad and I were about to walk down the aisle, he snapped his fingers at my dad and I as were we apparently walking down the aisle too soon. There was probably a better way to get our attention. In addition, I was not completely happy with the photobooth. I was in communication with Jimmy until the day of the wedding when he was suddenly unavailable and his cousin Christina and male companion were there. The camera was so low that guests had to crouch down. A chair or bench bench would have been nice. The backdrop did not consistently cover the background in photos throughout the evening. Myself and many guests were never told about the features: to hit the re-do button if we didn't like the picture, that two photos will automatically print (one for guests and one for the couple), that if we hit print additional copies will be printed from the original 2. I have over 5 copies of some prints because this was never explained. My mom had to fix the scrapbook as photo strips were placed in different directions. I additionally went through multiple times as there were repeated photo strips throughout the scrapbook. I will say that the photo strip perfectly matched my invitations and I did receive all of the photos taken digitally in a timely manner. I also requested individual photos from certain strips and Jimmy was able to send me them. Overall, I was not happy to hear that Dakota took an umbrella from an elderly guest table and ignored my mom's anniversary request. He did a good job making the day go smoothly, but he is very opinionated and comes off very rude at times. read more

What a rollercoaster it has been re-planning a wedding during COVID-19! I first started talking with Dakota aka DJ Sota in April 2019 and was back and forth about securing him or another vendor. Everyone seemed to have competitive pricing and good customer service. What shifted me in his direction was his prompt and detailed responses and his personality. He seemed honest, hardworking and genuinely wanted to make our day a great experience. We booked him and moved forward. I ended up paying him in full early in 2020 but then COVID-19 hit and all the plans changed. I didn't think I was going to need a DJ any longer when May came around so Dakota and I worked out a refund payment plan because he was not able to return the money I paid him in full. I did expect him to keep our deposit just to clarify. I only wanted to be refunded the balance I'd paid him ahead of time. Plans changed a lot and we ended up needing a DJ. Luckily he was still available! We didn't need his lighting services so he refunded that portion. He came through the day of the wedding providing DJ services for the ceremony in our backyard and the reception at a nearby restaurant. Throughout the process he gave good feedback on our song selections to help us manage the setting for our guests but I felt at times he could be a little pushy when it came to his opinions. I understand he has the experience and knowledge but sometimes you just want what you want. I took most of his advice but there were a few exceptions. One of the toughest parts of planning was the dance songs- let me explain. We had a 30 person wedding during a pandemic so I knew very few people would dance. Dakota was adamant about not sticking to the list of songs we selected. He wanted us to choose more transition songs for him to use. Though he did use all of our song selections for ceremony, cocktail hour (I think), entrance/exit, first dances, dinner, cake, bouquet/garter and slow songs. Now under normal circumstances I would be with him 100% because I was originally planning for a 130 person wedding but with a crowd of less than 30 people, I couldn't understand why he wouldn't just stick to our song list. I wasn't worried about transitions or getting people to the dance floor because I understood some people would not be comfortable. We exchanged emails in which I selected songs that I was okay for him to play but in the end I heard less of the songs that I wanted to hear in comparison to the songs he thought would get people to the dance floor. My feet were quite tired by the time I arrived to the reception and I was going into my first dance with my husband and my dance with my dad. I kept trying to give Dakota hand signals to tell him to fade out the song and transition but he wasn't picking up my signals so I was in pain going from my husband to my dad. I had to walk off the dance floor with my dad because he hadn't transitioned the song and I was feeling faint from the pain and the heat. I waited forever to do my grand entrance and I finally found out it was because he was waiting for my mom. While I appreciate him doing that, I ended up moving forward because I had been feeling faint at that time as well. My bridesmaids got me ice water to try to cool me down but I needed to sit at my table and rest a bit. The group photo, cake cutting, garter/bouquet toss all went well. We had to end early because people started leaving and the group was already so small. It took a minute but we did the grand exit and wrapped up. Overall, Dakota has the expertise it takes to coordinate with the bride & groom and lead a crowd. There's no question he has what it takes so I would highly recommend him as a DJ. He led the evening beautifully. The only critique I have it just to be a little more flexible when it comes to the couples wants and try to pick up on the brides signals. Honestly I'm not sure if he just couldn't see me but ouch! Lol It may not have been his fault. We appreciated all he did to make our day amazing! read more

It's like I'm trapped in this "upside down" reality (Stranger Things reference) where those bad moments replay in my head and I can't change a thing. Now, although I'm not happy about 1) the wrong mother/son dance-song accidentally being played SECONDS after playing the correct one (rookie move), or 2) how my exit song started playing half way through our exit (it was an Intense awkward moment of silence walking down the steps & me thinking where tf is my song?! Our social media minute was in silence ‍soo awkward ugh).... I am relieved only by the fact that our guests DID have a lot of fun on the dance floor and were really happy about the overall playlist. Ultimately, I feel responsible for NOT being a bridezilla and communicating my vision enough or just communicating it well. So all I'm saying is Don't make my mistake and just make your vision WELL known, say what matters the most to you. What is important. Whether you hire this DJ or not, whoever you hire, be anal about YOUR day. Don't hold back any detail. Cause You WILL remember it for the rest of your life and you can never go back and change it.
