In the past 7-8 years, the rest of Grandview has been changing and becoming more upscale. But DK Diner, a solid and unfussy greasy spoon located on the border between Grandview and Marble Cliff, has been holding the line for Old Grandview. I generally go to DK once every couple of months and almost exclusively for their cake donuts. Often cited as one of the best donuts Columbus, their best regular donuts are really quite good, especially since I prefer cake over yeast donuts. In particular, I really like the blueberry and the sour cream donuts, whose flavors add a bit of tang to otherwise sweet items. However, their specialty donuts are kind of hit/miss. The apple fritter is objectively very good, but it's nearly triple the price of a regular donut and is a poor value given that it's not 3x as big and there's really not that much apple in there. I also got their cronut last time, and a word of advice: avoid, because mine was a floppy, rectangular, slightly floppy croissant. It's priced the same as their apple fritter ($3.50) and is objectively quite bad. The only non-donut thing I've ordered from DK was an western omelette (which was perfectly fine) so I can't comment to much about their menu. The menu is large, has a few interesting items (e.g. the Donut Burger), and is relatively affordable, so it's worth a breakfast stop. Service is not overly solicitous but fine. Overall, DK's a good, unfussy place to get breakfast food. The regular cake donuts are worth coming for, and some of the menu items look intriguing. I'd recommend the specialty donuts less, and avoid the cronut. read more

I've been twice now and still just feel disappointed. Between the under-seasoned food and the overcooked chicken and waffle I just don't really find my self excited to return. The chicken was so tough to chew and the waffle didn't help. I really want to support local business and enjoy this, however all I can think of this diner is under seasoned poor quality Midwestern food. Some people love it, I get that, I think I just would like a better quality product for the $10-$20 breakfast range. Another few things that took away from the experience was the busy atmosphere, low amount of parking, and the ultra informal feel of seating. I had a really weird experience here recently. Our server was so unbelievably inattentive that it was shocking. My friend and I arrived midday, there were only one or two tables outside, and the weather was decent, so we sat down on the patio. It took our server several minutes to even acknowledge us. Once she finally came over, she merely said "are you ready?" No hello or anything. She also had a nastyyyy cough... After ordering, my friend and I chatted for a little while and didn't realize that drinks were self serve. No big deal, but would've definitely benefited from hearing that from our server. Another server dropped off our food shortly after, but walked away immediately. Unfortunately, we were missing a plate of food. We waited for our server to return to us, or even come back near our area, but she never did. My friend and I just went ahead and finished the food that we had. About 10 minutes after finishing, our server came back out and once again, didn't acknowledge us. She just started cleaning some tables, no check back or anything. We waved her over, asked for the bill, and requested that the food we didn't receive be removed and she just walked away. I guess she went to talk to her manager? All in all, the food that we did receive was ok. Nothing to write home about...but VERY poor service. I won't be coming back any time soon and definitely wouldn't recommend. read more

The topping to the Bloody Mary (tots covered in bacon and two green olives at the end) made this an awesome drink! I think the spices were perfect but the overall drink tasted on the weak side. DK Diner is a Columbus breakfast staple. It is rare to find it without a wait on the weekends because it is such gem. They have all the breakfast classics on their menu. I think everything is good but I would love to keep going back to find their signature, one of a kind menu items. This sandwich was delicious. We also got a side of gravy and potatoes for the gravy. The waitress was so sweet and helpful as we were trying to decide if we wanted to sit outside in December but they have heaters and the outside seating area was very warm. The coffee and drinks are serve yourself which is great. My sister got some donuts to go and I've tried them many times at work. I highly recommend the blueberry one. The diner and parking lot is small so it sucks to get there. I'm not a breakfast restaurant eater. It's not really vegetarian friendly. The lunch menu here has some better options. It's okay for diner food. The black bean burger is about $9. It's good compared to others. There also is a small menu of salads. It's atmosphere is the best thing about it. They have a bunch of regulars who are always in there. It can get frustrating if you haven't been there. This could go better if you can find a regular to go with. DK diner is a quaint little place. The drinks are self serve and they have cute mugs with random things on them like you'd find at your friends house. The coffee was out for the first 20-30 mins we were there and we kept having to go back to check if it was refilled. We sat outside in the tent which was fine, although the heater kicks on every once in awhile and is pretty loud and annoying. We also weren't sure if we needed to go order from the front as it took so long for someone to come to our table (we did eventually have someone come take our order so just be patient I guess). The drinks here are self serve which I really liked as I could serve as many refills of coffee as I wanted without having to wait. Now for the food. I got the chorizo hash and my girlfriend got the special - chiliques. My chorizo was nice and spicy and had a wonderful flavor! Under it was a bed of potatoes that were perfectly seasoned that I couldn't get enough of! The chiliques has a great salsa verde on top that I could have eaten with a spoon, it was that good. The food was AMAZING! I got the donut batter pancakes which were the best I've ever had. My 4 stars is more for the service and price. Our food came out quick but when it came out the order was made wrong. When we brought it to the servers attention she was apologizing and sweet. She went back to the kitchen and we could hear her and other employees yelling at each other about the mistake in the back. Also you get your own drinks which is fine but you pay almost 3 dollars per drink even if you get water which in our case we just got water so I found this a little pricy. My friend and I wanted brunch. I remember my coworkers would rave about this place- so I threw caution to the wind... and chose a new diner. We arrived and waited awhile because their diner had reached capacity. I respected that right off the bat. They took us back to a table after 20 minutes or so. My friend and I split French toast and chocolate chip pancakes. The pancakes were divine, but the French toast was a little subpar. We wanted to try the donuts, but opted for next time. I just had a solid 4-star brunch experience at DK Diner with Gwen W and Miranda L. One of the restaurant's managers, Trevor, was kind enough to let us sample some freshly made doughnuts on the house. They were all tasty, but I particularly liked the Apple Fritter with generous chunks of cinnamon apples in the center. The rest of the table enjoyed the Doussant (half-croissant, half-doughnut). I ordered the Grilled Cheese B.S. with a side of fruit. It was excellent and one of the best breakfast sandwiches i've ever had. It's a grilled cheese composed of Texas toast filled two over hard eggs, gooey melted American cheese and cripsy bacon. The toast was nicely grilled on the outside, while still being soft inside. The bacon also had a perfectly crunchy texture which elevated the sandwich even further. Such a simple sandwich, but oh so good and for only $5.75. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly. I also liked DK Diner's self-service drink station and pay at the register system. It made for a pretty efficient check-out process. I love that the drinks were self serve- you grab a mug and can get coffee whenever you desire. Same goes for water, tea, soft drinks. We didn't have to wait long for our food which was also incredible. The menu is pretty big and has all of the stuff you'd expect at a diner (pancakes, omelettes, burrito) along with some fun additions (a donut burger?!).
