Because walking in you might be there all day depending on what device you trying to get. I was able to get in and out at a reasonable time but because I had a little issue it was longer than I would have liked. But the lady who helped me was able to do what she needed to do and it wasn't as bad of an experience as it usually is. It's like a well oiled machine. I know it's crazy given them a 4-star...but my experience wasn't that bad!

I arrived just before 9:30am last Friday after receiving the flash flood and tornado watch warning. Was that the most cautious thing to do? Of course not. However, I knew it would be pretty empty given how terrible the weather was. Before arriving, I had visited their website and completed their questionnaire that ensures you have your checklist of items to bring. This was very helpful in making my visit run smoothly. I prepared all the documents that were on the checklist and went to get my ticket at the check-in counter. The clerk ran through the items I would need and handed me C135. When I sat in the lobby, I did not see any "C" tickets on the screen and began thinking I would be there forever. Fortunately, it went by very quickly. Within 45 minutes, I was approved for my Real ID driver's license, had taken my picture, paid the fees, and was back home. Things ran very smoothly and I really can say it was because I went through their webpage and responded to the questions that populated the most accurate checklist of items I would need for my visit.

I highly recommend going there instead of the SW location. Also, don't forget to bring a credit card, cash, or check - they don't accept tap payments. It worked out for me, but I still think the Georgetown location functions so well because it's in a wealthy neighborhood whose residents have the time and resources to demand better. I also received an email survey from the Georgetown location, which tells me that the SW staff are turning people away with zero documentation, which means they can never be held accountable for poor service. Everyone in DC deserves a functioning DMV, not just the people who live in NW. +++ My experience at the SW Waterfront DMV today was completely unacceptable. I moved to DC from Massachusetts a few years ago, but still had my Massachusetts license as I don't own a car or drive in DC. When I lost my MA license, I figured it was an opportunity to get the correct license and a RealID at the same time. I brought all the requisite forms: two bills showing proof of DC residency, the application, my up-to-date passport, and proof of driving ability - a "true and attested driving record" from the Massachusetts RMV with the registrar's signature, intended to be used for official and court purposes, which I requested by mail for $20 as instructed on the state's website. The DMV agent took one look at the driving record and said, "This doesn't look like the ones I've seen." She said it didn't "feel" like the correct form, and when I told her this was what the RMV provided and that there was no other form they offered, she still refused it. I asked if she had an example to compare it against, and she said no. I asked her what I was supposed to do, and she suggested I call the RMV. When I told her I had, and this is what's available, she replied, "Well, you'd better find the license, then." The manager at the front was no help either, and said it was policy not to accept a form without a stamp, even if it's the most official form a state offers - the implication being, apparently, people from Massachusetts simply aren't allowed to move to DC. I get that this is a hard job, and it's the week before the holiday, but... I'm a person who can work remotely from the waiting room and take PTO if necessary. I don't have kids, so I don't have to worry about childcare, and, while infuriating, multiple visits to the DMV fundamentally only costs me time. That's not true of everyone. Denying service for something as arbitrary as a form not 'feeling' right and requiring people to come back until they can get someone to take them seriously is just going to make people trust government less. My takeaway, if you need a form from another state that they don't immediately recognize (like VA or MD) bring other materials to make your case - the envelope it came in, the receipt from any fee, instructions from the website, a customer service email confirming it's the right form. Even then, plan to have to go more than once, until you get someone who's willing to listen to you.

Be warned though there's not really enough chairs in the waiting area, I was able to get one of the last ones, but I assume some people have to stand when they're super busy. I went online and filled out some paperwork in advance. Of course, when I get there, they handed me a form to fill out and don't have any pens available then. So I filled out the form in pencil (which was all I had) only to be told when my number was called I had to re-complete the form in pen....only to be told actually I don't need the form at all since I already provided that information online, Also be sure to listen for your number being called, I didn't miss mine but another guy did and not sure if they made him wait longer as a result or not. The DMV representative at the counter was very friendly and knowledgeable even though it was later in the afternoon. Obviously, I hope to avoid ever going to the DMV again but if I'm forced to I'll probably come back to this location.

Also, this place is full of coughing and sneezing people--probably 3-4 dozen. I'm so glad to see all of the taxes I pay this state, including the ridiculous annual car tax, going to fuel such an efficient operation!

This location is tucked inside the American Legion & is literally a folding table located in their main event room. I thought I walked into the wrong place, as did others behind me, but it's small size was super nice & it was epic to have no line! The person who assisted me was very nice & friendly ~ She's was 5 stars! And the convenience of being able to make an appointment & be seen right away ~ again 5 stars! And being located in close proximity to me ~ another 5 stars! The DMV gets only 1 star because of all the BS involved but it's not this location's fault, it's the way the DMV rolls. I had made an appointment & was confident that I had everything I needed to complete my transaction. Sure enough, I sat down & the lady said I needed another piece of information that was not listed on the website! What does that mean... It means that I could not complete my transaction! It means that I took off time/leave from work and drove somewhere unnecessarily! And it means that I now have to go back & do it all over again! Frustrating to say the least!!! I had worked for days to find all of the paperwork needed but turns out I didn't need it. But I blame that on their HQ, not this location. Location is inside on the Canal Level of the old mall, now called Georgetown Park. The entrance is at M and basically Potomac Street, on the corner just past Clyde's and TJ Maxx if coming from the east. Go inside the glass doors and down the escalators one level. Gold's Gym is right in front of you, go left almost back around the escalators (not into the parking garage) and there is the entrance for the DMV. You can't take any food or drinks in, so either put inside your bag (like I did with my sealed beverage thermos) or you have to throw it out or sit it on the random table outside security. They didn't check my bag but did tell the guy in front of me he couldn't bring in his paper coffee cup. You wait to be called to the triage front desk who assign you a number based on the service you need and hand you a ticket and any forms you need. (Notably, my letter mentioned nothing about a form.) I grabbed a form, pen, and clipboard and less than 5 minutes later my number was called and displayed on the screens they have, which directed me to a desk for service. That's where I found out they needed none of my identification paperwork, but I needed to take a vision test and pay $47 and get a new photo. My agent was friendly and quick and no complaints even though I was a bit disheveled and frozen as I had walked all the way from Dupont on one of the coldest days of the year. Your new license will arrive on the mail 10 business days later!

But I never ran a red light and from the center lane and barely touched the zebra crossing. They gave me the ticket for code T113 section C which states I was making a right turn and touching zebra crossing. Their live rep said I still need to pay the $150 fine even when I did not run the red light I was NOT on the right lane to make the right turn as stated in code T113 section C. ON other hand see how they are violating their own parking codes. The whole C DMV should be ashamed.

All of the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and the facility is nicely designed, clean and well lit. There was very little wait as the line was not that long due to there being several counters open for assistance. I needed to fill out some additional forms online, and they had computers available for customer use, so I was able to address everything during my visit. The employee that helped me even waited for me to go take care of my matter and come back to him without making me wait while he processed others in the que. Hopefully, I never have reason to be here again, but if I do at least I know I will not be dreading it.
