This review comes after a long thought process and remembering that I should've heeded the warnings of the other reviews.
After contracting with DMV Birth Doulas (July 2021) , for almost every appointment due I had to follow up for the schedule date for the services to be rendered and I am unable to think of one date that wasn't rescheduled due to some type of scheduling conflict. Of course, I understand the business and births happen all the time, however, most of our reschedules were not due to births, but rather other things. This was very frustrating, especially since I, the customer, was doing the reaching out to schedule the calls that were to be made as included in the contract.
While Nikita has lots of knowledge and we felt comfortable selecting her company based on her knowledge and medical experience, the operations of the business and administration are lacking. I, too had the same experience as others described of my card being charged without my permission and had to communicate to receive the funds back, which was done.
Onto the actual birth (January 2022): my plan was to labor at home with no induction, however I went past the due date so things changed. On my induction date, my husband and I were clear on the process and we were in communication with Nikita up until a certain point. After deciding that we wanted her services earlier than anticipated on the day of induction, we were told that there was an $800 charge for her to come early/immediately as requested. We paid the $800, as I was in labor, and wanted her services while at the hospital, but after paying the $800, and being told she was on her way to the hospital, she let us know she was in a car accident. After making sure she was OK, she was still texting us and let us know that she would not be able to make the birth but would send a back up Doula. As we were very much in the moment, my husband requested to be put in contact with the back of Doula, but that never happened. Bottom line, I did not have a Doula for the birth of my child that I paid for and although she was in an accident we still did not receive the services of the back up or even the communication of back up Doula.
Additionally, we paid for the placenta encapsulation services, and due to a medical issue I was unable to have my placenta encapsulated, with evidence from the doctor, and Nikita was unwilling to refund the $350.
There were many times during the engagement that I wanted and should've followed my first mind to not continue services however I pressed on, but I definitely regret it. There were many signs professionally and administratively that things would go wrong and not be fulfilled as they did.
As Nikita apologized many times before becoming very unprofessional the day of the birth of my child since we were asking for a refund, which was very stressful, she was still unwilling to refund any of our service fees, as the only services that were provided were education and a few meetings. Can you imagine having a birth plan, a doula and showing up to the hospital and requesting the Doula you have paid for to come or a back up, and being in labor, with many questions from the nurses and doctors, and you were relying on a service you paid for, and no one ever shows up.
The only way we were able to recover some of our funds was to talk to our credit card companies and explain the situation and show them proof of text messages. To this day, Nikita is still unwilling and hasn't refunded the same day fee of $800. Had the credit card companies not refunded the charges, we would've easily been out of $3000.
This is a synopsis of what happened during our engagement and process with DMV Birth Doulas. I gave birth January 2022.
