Ask the Community - DMV Driver Safety Office

If I walk in my DMV form from my Doc authorizing the lifting of my medical suspension, could I possibly walk out with my license reinstated?

No, you can't. I asked one of the employees. It takes 10 business days for you to get your result.

From the beginning, she was rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. She told me I needed to leave and obtain additional documentation without taking the time to explain my options or try to help further. When I politely asked if someone else could assist me or if I could speak with a supervisor, I felt like my concerns were brushed aside. What upset me the most was when I asked for her name. Instead of responding professionally, she raised her voice and told me she could not provide her last name. The interaction left me feeling embarrassed and disrespected. Thankfully, after requesting assistance again, I was helped by the employee at window #1. He was patient, respectful, and took the time to review my situation. Because of his professionalism, everything was completed successfully for both myself and my son. I also spoke with a supervisor and completed the DMV survey so management is aware of my experience. No one expects perfection, but everyone deserves to be treated with courtesy and respect. I hope this feedback encourages better customer service, because based on my experience, Beatrice should not be in a customer-facing role unless her professionalism and communication improve.

The guard seemingly investigated each complaint and also evidently understood what I suspected, and did nothing, especially not remove this gentleman from our collective. I saw the man in question with my own eyes, who could not (OR would not?) deign to keep his eyelids lifted for his drivers license photo, whilst his pants fell down to his ankles because they were unsupported by a belt that hadn't been fastened around his waist. He also attempted to flirtatiously offer his place in the photo line (a slurred, "ladies first") to a woman who clearly was not attempting to have a drivers license photo taken, which I thought was rather chivalrous of him. He exercised a titans grip upon a paper Trader Joe's grocery bag, which I can only assume was loaded with cans of Simpler Times. All DMV employees allowed this man to renew his drivers license, exit the building, and presumably operate an automobile. He is truly an unchallenged champion who walks (and drives) amongst us. I am impressed. I knocked off a star because it took 5ever to renew my drivers license. I cannot for the life of me fathom what could possibly be bogging down this process.

When i was called up to window 17 and politely presented my situation and what I needed help with, the old white man behind the window was extremely aggressive and rude, I froze and didn't even want to speak because I was so shocked at his outrageous manners. He asked if I needed help with classic dmv procedures and he doesn't know anything about my app and started explaining to me what the dmv is. Definitely felt rooted in racism and sexism but whatever, he walked away and told me to go to another window (19) where he told another younger man "so she needs help with some app.. yeah.." gave him the piece of paper I got from the front, scoffed, and walked away. The younger man was definitely more civil and respectful and was able to provide me with the contact information and help I needed. Only reason i'm writing this is because I can tell from how comfortable the old man was having this arrogant cocky attitude with me that he's definitely had it with others before.

Human customers frantically searching for the QR code to scan on their paperwork. Then we all stand in the middle of the room yelling, "My paperwork does not have a QR code --HELPPPPPPPP!" DMV workers roll their eyes and one yells back--the "You don't scan the paperwork--You scan the QR code that is on the sign (at knee level)!" Once you do this you are asked what service you need, then they text you (interesting assumption that everyone has a smart phone, lots of seniors only use a flip phone if any mobile phone at all) with a passcode that you are supposed to put into the page you QRd. That then gives you the a letter and number combo that is the magic letter and number combo you use to be called to the counter. Several people had made appointments online, but they still have to go through this absurd process. You can hear people mumbling, "So why the heck did I need to make an appointment if I still have to go through this process for a number to be called to the counter?" When my turn finally came, I had already filled out my paperwork as described on their website, but it turns out that they have never read their website, so there was a lengthy meeting of staff in the supervisor's office in how to manage my transaction (this alone left me feeling like this crew has no idea what they are doing and that my paperwork is probably going to be done incorrectly). I paid my fee and was given temporary paperwork with the "official" paperwork to arrive by snail mail later (no one knew when). DMV is never a fun place to visit, but this non-human (literally) process is the craziest I have ever encountered.

That day, the line was extremely long even with a 2:30 PM appointment. By the time we made it to the window, they said she couldn't test because it was after 4 PM. We had to wait through a slow-moving line, which wasn't our fault, and once I pointed that out, they allowed her to test. When we came back for her second attempt, the staff member who took her paper said "again?" in a rude tone. She was already nervous, so that was unprofessional and unnecessary. Because of the experience, we ended up going to another location for the behind-the-wheel test. My son eventually took his behind-the-wheel at this location and had a much better experience. His tester, Carolina, gave clear directions with enough notice and provided helpful feedback afterward. He passed, and I was relieved, especially after hearing mixed stories from others. Overall, this DMV can be frustrating and slow, and some staff can be rude, but there are also staff like Carolina who make the process much easier. There was also a woman at check in that was super friendly and helpful, but I didn't catch her name. She even wished my son luck for his test.
