Beyond that its a damn fine place to get a tan like i did! Fellas: this isnt the place to pick up chicks, seriously, dont push your luck otherwise you might find your face in the sand like some obnoxious Brit i saw. 28 Grad is an awesome beach club - the best in Hamburg…read more Seriously, if the weather is good in Hamburg, it's worth jumping on the S1 train to Wedel. Once you arrive there, you still have a 10 minute walk down to the beach. The other way to get here - my preferred way - is to cycle alongside the Elbe. Close to Wedel you're forced inland to make your way around some huge ugly industrial complex, but don't be dissuaded - you can't see anything of it from the beach. Once you finally arrive you'll find a lovely little beach club that's situated at one end of one of the nicest beaches in Hamburg. If the tide is in, the beach can be a little narrow, but the bay is very shallow, which makes it great for children for paddling and swimming. Also, if the tide is out the beach quickly becomes rather large, flat and perfect for a game of beach cricket or football. As with all beach clubs the prices are somewhat inflated and you should expect to pay a EUR1 deposit on any glass or bottle. This is the best beach bar in Hamburg though :)

I always say "I'm heading down to Strandperle", but in reality I've never hung out at Strandperle, always at Ahoi, because it's breezier, and they have a decent weizenbier on tap. I've been there in January, when it's just barely above freezing, and all the outdoor tables are full (Hamburgians's love to soak up rays on sunny days; though if it's over 80 degrees, it tends to be less crowded because they find the heat a bit intolerable). The pizza is pretty good, but I usually just get the tap weissbier. Getting a table outside in the shade can require some eagle-eyed patience, but you can pretty much always find a place in the sun, or take your drink 25 feet and sit on the sand. Far and away the best way to get there, if you mum doesn't live just up the hill, is to take the ferry boat (#61 or #62), from Landungsbrucken or the Fischmarkt to Neumühlen/Övelgönne then walk west along the river. It's part of the public transportation system, so you can travel on the ferry with your day pass, or you can buy a ticket in the boat from a machine. If you're up for a swim, there is a public indoor/outdoor swimming pool which is an 8-minute walk from the end stop on the ferry line, Finkenwerder. (You can also actually swim in the river, off to the left from Ahoi/Strandperle, but the water is kinda brown.) Then, after a swim, Ahoi/Strandperle is the perfect spot for some après -swim suds.

We have the water, but no sand to go with it, so we pile it high by the harbour, throw in some beach chairs and recliners, a collection of chairs and benches, some palm trees and lots of tropical kitsch! This has more recliners than most other bars, unfortunately it also fills up quite quickly. The drinks at Del Mar are great, you have fantastic views over the harbour and can just sit back and relax and watch the ships go by. If you've never been to a beach bar or just need to relax after a long day, check out this spot!

The next stand over o ordered the Curry Wurst and Pommes with Mayo. Nice large portion of all and the Curry Wurst was tasty but I'm not used to the sweet-sour glaze it swam in. One drawback...no cards. Cash only and you don't know that before you order. I guess I really should get used to asking that ahead of time because I keep running into that. But there are places you just expect to be able to use a card and a restaurant is just one of those. I can see how this place would be packed on a summer afternoon or weekend. Too fun!
