The managers/chefs Arnold and Julie pride themselves on the authentic crepes, galettes, hot chocolates and coffees. I worked there for a few days when they were very busy last summer, and I never managed to get my espresso making quite up to their particular standards! All produce is carefully sourced, all organic and much home grown. The crepes are truly delicious, although at the higher end of the budget at up to £6 if you add extra ingredients/toppings. But seriously, the *only* place for decent food on campus. Sadly The Coffee Workshop Creperie struggles to make enough money as the university wont advertise it at all. In fact, this is its third year in operation and it's unlikely to be open for much longer, as the university wants control over all of its cafes - so look forward to further homogenised *choice* on campus. If you get a chance to go to this place please do - if enough people know about it and use it then hopefully the university management can't shut it down!!

The Coffee Workshop is definitely my new top campus eatery- with an amazing menu of galettes, crepes, sandwiches and salads, they offer everything I could ever want from a cafe! I'm actually sort of worried, as it's just across the road form my building...what's to stop me popping over every lunch time??! Will power, you say? No chance. Crepes are my absolute favourite. The galettes (savoury crepes) are made with wholemeal flour and fillings include cheese, mushrooms, spinach, caramelised onion, goats cheese, chicken, salmon...the list goes on, the choices are pretty much infinite! I sampled the 'Scallop special', which contained cheese, spinach, tomatoes and scallops. It cost £5, which is on the higher end of what you expect to pay for campus food, but it was massive, incredibly filling and delicious! Prices generally range from £3.50-£5. The sweet crepes also look delicious- they do all the usual suspects...lemon and sugar, nutella, maple syrup etc. As well as all this pancakey goodness, you can order other breakfast items such as French toast, waffles and eggs on toast. I'm gushing, I know I am. I'm just too excited about this discovery...campus dining revolutionized! My only complaint is that I left smelling like a giant pancake- the ventilation could definitely be improved!

That's not to say it's an unpleasant eating experience, but it would certainly be nice to have a bit of choice. During the noon - 2pm rush, customers can stand in line for quite awhile. The Coffee Shop is more of a cafeteria, with a serve-yourself approach to meals and drinks. Full hot lunches and dinners can be purchased for between £4 - £6, and chilled, pre-packaged sandwiches and salads are available for a bit less. Two hot drink machines serve up Americanos, espressos and lattes, but are quite slow...This may have much to do with the loooong lines. Healthy options like small containers of dried fruit and nuts are an easy takeaway option for afternoon snacks. I do enjoy the comfy couch sets, as they're great when you're in a larger group but would probably opt for an actual restaurant for lunch breaks if one were close by.

This Café was, certainly when I came to Sussex in 2006, one of the main unhealthy offenders, mostly offering the standard fried chicken and chips buffet type of choices. Maybe it was the grease clogging my vision, but I this place was just a bit murky, grey and washed, like an 80s film or Soviet Russia. Now, though with the inclusion of healthy options such as little pots of melon, pineapple or grapes, it is as though the haze has descended and clarity and light has been reinstalled. Of course, these introductions alone could not single handedly have created this improvement. The menu on the whole has really improved, although still offering pizza, it now looks actually quite edible and not drenched in Cheese. An evening menu consisting of minute steak ciabatta, seasonal leaves with red onion marmalade served with chipped potatoes at £4.50 tastes great and gives you change for a fiver. The day time buffet has a wide range of salads available too and you choose how much so you don't have to spend too much. What a great idea, sounds like it could catch on. Old problem though of food on campus is that mostly it is quite expensive in comparison to the discounts on Beer that the SU get.

One reading Plato's Republic and looking a little pissed off by the other two animatedly talking about being "Cheese Fiends" and whether Feta is "Sheep's Cheese". I'm not sure who I'd rather be in this situation, but I know whose going to be panicking in the morning of their finals...and it's not the Plato girl. That is of course presuming that these two characters aren't doing some obscure M.A. in Cheese Management or Dairy Studies? But it's not the everyday University scene that is the only reason I'm feeling nostalgic, but the general chilled atmosphere in this larger and open plan café. The café, which serves the needs of the cultural studies building is a bit more, well...cultured than the other café's on campus with some African style art work and a more stylish, soft orange and yellow interior, not to mention the trump card; Sofa's. The food too is more on the healthy, soupy and worldly kind of vibe with the vegetable Mousakka and Spinach and sundried tomato Pie quiche catching the eye on today's particular menu. If your doing cultural studies, which basically means you should be a hippy, your more likely to enjoy the atmosphere here than the utilitarian-esque Hums or Bolthole café's. Though of course there's no on the door hippy policy, so come here anyway if your not and got some time to burn.

It's the kind of cafe that suits these disciplines well and is decorated with tribal styled pictures and has a number of chunky sofas. I really like this cafe and find that the staff who work here are more friendly than at some of the other locations on campus. There is also easy access to a number of benches outside, if you wanted to enjoy your coffee in the sun. Prices are the standard campus rate for your coffee or tea and I do think that these are a bit steep. This aside, they serve up a fairy wide range of food for a Uni cafe and you can get salads, various cakes alongside a good range of sandwiches and baguettes. They will also make a baguette to your specifications (if they have the ingredients in the fridges). There is also a computer here for accessing your library or emails, which can be handy if you need to check something but don't want to have to fight through the queues for the library PC's. To be fair, there are other places I would go to eat on campus, but it is a nice location to arrange to meet class mates for a post seminar chat and stays open late enough to be a good place to prepare for a presentation for late afternoon seminars, when the cafe has quietened down.

Designed as a stop off point for ramblers, drunk students who thought they'd walk out of Sussex campus and the occasional serious walker, they serve the basic teas and coffees, as well as a mixed bag of cooked breakfasts, ice creams, and a bit of classic British pub food. None of it is particularly good, but then again, in this area, what choice do you have? Stanmer is a sleepy little town, incongruously placed inbetween Brighton and the Sussex University campus, and most Brightonians and students give it quite a wide berth. This isn't out of anything to aggressive or violent: there's just little to do in Stanmer, beyond walk through it on a walk through the countryside. It is quite picturesque, an effort on the part of the village green preservation society no doubt, but there's only so many times you can walk through it. Stanmer Tea Rooms is the only commercial enterprise in this little town, it seems, and thus run the cafe/restaurant business for anyone who happens to be passing through. I doubt the locals spend much time here, although tourists flock in in their droves. When there's nowhere else to go, eh? If there was, I probably would, as the tea rooms are pretty overpriced, and not much of what's on offer tastes of anything at all. Still, if I'm hungry and in the area, it's either this or... well, it's this. Better than nowt.
