The place is nice in the kind weather, but seems like such a grey campus for being so close to several nice squares (especially Russell Square). The quad area outside of the main building is a nice place to dodge errant tennis balls being thrown around and take a seat on the green grass. Eat a sandwich if you want to. No one's pressuring you to not eat your sandwich wherever you want to eat it. You can eat your sandwich standing or sitting, no judgement here. Speaking of food, outside SOAS there is a vegetarian krishna food table that gives away lots of food for free every day. You can just stroll on up to it (or the que) and they give you a huge plate of food. Based on every single person telling me they didn't like it, though, I'm staying away from there. To some people, free is free so you might want to try it. The area around the aforementioned Russell Square is my favorite part of Birkbeck rather than the area around the main building. My classes are 3 hours long, so when there is a 20 minute break in the class, we all stroll out into the square and grab some grub at the Russell Square Cafe. It's incredibly peaceful. I like donuts. Birkbeck's main building has a cafe on the ground floor, but the prices aren't so good. So I'd recommend bringing food onto campus (Russell Squ cafe is also a bit pricey). There are many coffee shops leading up to the school. That's another thing, Birkbeck is in the center of London, easily accessible via underground by way of the Russell Square and Goodge Street tube stations. So if you're looking for a centrally located school, LOOK NO FURTHER. Stop looking. I take classes at both London Met and Birkbeck; and everything at Birkbeck is so much nicer. But that's to be expected. #TeamBirkbeck

I have owned a Canon 5d mk2 for over 3 months now and am a very fast learner, have taken many beautiful photos and have since jumped into some studio work with clients. My skills in the studio lighting department were lacking, so I booked a one-to-one course with the recommended 'studio lighting' instructor, whom I cannot name if I want this review published..Upon arrival, the tutor was late by a few mins and was on the phone. He didn't even bother to introduce himself, instead just pointed his finger at me, gesturing me to wait for the 5 minutes he prolonged his conversation. After I formally introduced myself, we walked to his small studio, where he bragged to me about the countless contracts and huge volumes of people who visit him from all over the world.In the studio, he was complaining about his pay-as-you-go internet and how he did not have enough credit to go online. Nevertheless, I showed him some photos which I had already taken.For the first hour we were sitting there and he showed me his portfolio, trying hard to explain the importance of light. I already understand this concept, hence the reason why I was there in the first place.As he showed me his portfolio, mainly of girls, I felt very uncomfortable with the intricate details and methods I learned he had used to make the models more relaxed, in such a way that they became easier to photograph and look seductive. Its not professional and I find it degrading from any perspective.He also went on about pictures of colleagues' private collections and how humiliating they were to look at; although the model you will learn of shortly sounded excited by the story; this man was clearly mistaking me for someone on a different wavelength. It was slowly becoming apparent that this was a waste of time and money.We were then interrupted by a large black man, some 6 feet plus, who heavily limped and sat down behind us just watching. I can only describe this moment as, very uncomfortable. I soon learned that this badly dressed man, who looked very similar to the generic descriptions reminiscent to the recent london riots and looting, was going to be our model. It became increasingly difficult to concentrate as this man, code named 'CHEDDAR', which btw is a colloquial term for 'MONEY' was always on his phone. He had around 3 or 4 mobile phones constantly ringing, when asked why so many phones, he replied in a monotone voice that it was all for business.Going into the practical, the tutor told me that he does not use a system to light his subjects. He insisted that he just does what feels right. How can I know what is right if I do not base it on a system? I was expecting him to explain the basic 1 light setup, 2 light setup, etc Instead he just chucked an ancient studio light on while his model undressed in front of us and put on his shiny pvc jacket.The tutor was trying hard to explain the difference between contrasts you can achieve with different shutter speeds and constant light outputs. In most instances he was jumping the gun and I had to pull him back and ask him what he was trying to show me. I felt as if he were rushing the lesson; if you could call it as such.Before not long, with his phone and Cheddar's phones ringing I soon understood that time was running out. At 2hrs and 50 mins the tutor's phone rang yet again, this time he left me and his supermodel at a distance while he continued his conversation for 10 mins. At 4pm (approx. 3hrs in), I approached him and he was clearing up his things. He didn't even bother to tell me anything. He asked me to pay him in cash, yet I was in constant communication with 'Photography Course London', who told me to pay into their bank, which I did. The tutor then started talking about how I should send him some pictures when I need some advice and then quickly showed me the exit door.This course was a complete waste of time and money. This tutor has no structure to his teaching methods; he has difficulty explaining himself and even confuses himself at times. He is clearly going through a difficult time in his life with his pay-as-you go internet and his 'business' supermodel Cheddar is obviously no model.When I spoke to 'PCL', I told them immediately after the lesson of my disappointment. The girl I spoke to on the phone burst out into laughter, then told me that she would pass on the message to her superior.The next week I was sent a rude email explaining how the tutor is an excellent teacher and how he even committed an extra half hour to teach me. What a complete lie.I can honestly say that I wasted my time and money without a doubt. My advice to anyone who is interested in learning from a professional

The quality of faculty that I have interacted with has been very good, but I obviously cannot generalise that to all the faculty. Classrooms are large and spacious. Enough elevators, washrooms on alternate floors. A cute little cafeteria downstairs that serves good coffee. Will check out some pastries the next time I'm there. City lit is meant to focus on continuing education and they offer a huge range of vocational subjects too. I saw a lot of posters regarding counselling for jobs and courses, so they are concerned with skills that can be used to up your resume or make a job change. - massage, therapy, computers, languages etc But they also offer courses in drama, food, wine tasting and jewellery design. The course held here range from tango to romantic languages and pottery. They have some quite high-tech looking computer labs for design classes and art studios stuffed with supplies. In the grand scheme of things the classes are cheap - from £7.00 a week for ongoing classes that dont require any equipment. Good points: if you enrol as a student for a fiver you get to use the internet and facilities in the library for a year. Bad points: No air-conditioning in summer or heating in winter. sweltering.

The meals in the cafe often consist of a selection of sandwiches (pannis, wraps etc.), jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings (beans, cheese, tuna etc.), chicken and pasta dishes, cous cous and salads. BPP is famous for its law courses but I have more experience of it's professional qualifications in…read moremarketing, which are based on the syllabus set by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). There are 4 levels of CIM qualification; Introduction level, Certificate level, Professional Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma. I think that BPP only offer professional diploma and postgrad diploma. Most people who have some knowledge of business (i.e. have been working in an office environment for 1-2 years), and have experienced study at university should be able to join at Professional Diploma level. I haven't tried other providers as BPP's location in Holborn is convenient to me, as it is close to bus and tube links and a nice area. There do not seem to be that many providers of CIM courses in London that are larger professional qualifications providers (FTC Kaplan do not run CIM courses in London currently), and BPP's course books are offered at a number of CIM events as being good study guides for the syllabus. The professional diploma is split into 4 modules, and you can take as many of these at a time as you want. Courses run either two nights per week, 6-9pm, fortnightly, or one Saturday every fortnight 9-5pm, and start in September or January. Each module takes about 3 months to complete and you can choose either assignment or exam for your assessment which will be held in a CIM exam centre (usually Fulham town hall) The teaching was good, though perhaps not as coherent as other professional qualifications such as the ACA for accounting. The BPP textbooks are comprehensive but could be better laid out and structured to help you study in the short time you have. You are also given a bank of past paper questions to familiarise yourself with question styles and a small notebook of printed flashcard style revision notes which are a condensed version of the book. Mock exams are also included and as part of the couse you will also attempt 2 mock exams at home per module. The classes are very interactive and involve a number of discussions and are rarely boring. Attending the classes is a great way to meet other people from a wide variety of different businesses and is a learning opportunity in itself. I took the CIM Professional Diploma to try and improve my CV and give me practial skills for marketing that I hope to be able to use in my work in the future. I feel that I can achieve this with the course at BPP. My main criticisms would be the admin at BPP which is badly organised and slow when sending out student cards and going through enrollment procedures. Other than that my experience so far has generally been good and I will return to complete my professional diploma in January by taking a further two modules. Classrooms are modern and never cramped; teaching uses powerpoint presentations and group work in class. Overall this course is good value for money and a good option for people who want to improve their knowledge of marketing procedures to improve their general business knowledge.
