I do actually know that their gelato tastes better than it does in the States. That's a fact.

After arriving in Salerno right at peak siesta time when nothing's open, we were on the hunt for a…read morequick lunch and landed on this adorable little pizzeria right off the main Piazza between old town and new town. It was a little hipster and reminded me of Philly, with chalkboards on the wall boasting TONS of interesting pizza varieties (even dessert varieties!). We weren't feeling too creative so stuck with our favorite classic margherita with buffalo mozzarella. We sat in the nice little enclosed outdoor patio area and the guy brought us each a personal pizza in a cute wooden box and two mini Cokes. I was a little confused cause I thought it was gonna be more of a "pocket" style, like a calzone. But don't get me wrong, it could definitely still be folded "portafoglio" style. Prices were reasonable. Honestly, this pizza was better than the one we had in Naples. I liked the sauce much better and it had the perfect amount of cheese. Plus, that crust was SO good...nice and pillowy, yet held up well to the toppings.

It was late, but saw a sign for Cicero on the nearby square and I'm glad we decided to go. The owner and the chef seemed to be the only two there. No one in our four person group could speak Italian (aside from small words/phrases), but both the owner and chef were able to help us understand the impressive menu. We ordered 2 bottles of wine from the local paestum area for the night. I got the zuppa (lentils and beef), which reminded me of my mom's pot roast, but with a spicy flavor, and the lasagna di mare, which had fresh local seafood caught that day. We were celebrating a birthday, so of course got the almond chocolate and orange torte (cake), with lovely cream and pomegranate on the side. Also had a few aperitifs including fig, rosemary and limoncello. Everything was beautifully presented and the restaurant advertises "refined free food", which their website means free of added sugars and uses organic products. Words and pictures do not do it justice. Definitely a must try if you're in the Salerno area.

So good, in fact, that after coming here on my first day in Salerno I immediately went back the next morning for more. I've had the chocolate, melon sorbet, and ricotta & pistachio. The ricotta & pistachio has perfect texture. The ricotta adds fluffiness and lightness to the body, while the pistachio swirl adds accents of sweetness and crunch. Absolutely recommend beating the crowd for.
