Of course, that is good for mountain tourists nearby who need the necessities because they have nothing, but I expected more. There was a good amount of southern/homestyle canned jams & jellies marketed to tourists visiting (which could be found at many gift shops in this part of the country), but none were necessarily local. We did pick out a peaches and pecans jam that ended up being awesome on freshly toasted sourdough though. We really wanted there to be more fresh vegetables, but it was slim pickings with just some scraps of not-so-great looking lettuce heads, carrots, and cucumbers. They did however have a nice deli in the far back with some interesting cheeses, as well as some options for pre-packaged and ready-to-eat meats/meals in the coolers adjacent to the deli case. The primary thing stocked here overall seems to be snack foods - of which, there is a good variety, but the shelves felt unnecessarily bare elsewhere and what was there was pretty generic. Service was OK, but from our experience getting cheese from the deli, it was evident that is not a typical request because it took awhile to square it all away. Overall, you'll be able to get some things to stock your pantry, but lowered expectations are necessary.

There was a short time that the store was closed in 2010 after the passing of the last remaining original family proprietor until the present owners reopened the doors in 2011 but that's like splitting hairs. Believe it or not they still carries staples like bread, butter and milk, but also other essential items for mountain life like local vegetables, jams, and honey to rakes, paint, plumbing and things that many people have never seen. The old original scales and carts can still be found scattered around the store amongst so many other things from the past that would be nearly impossible to find these days even if you have an Amazon Prime account. Although there has been some technology installed, the old cash register from 1913 still sits close by and is still operational if there is ever a need. So while Pace General still has thousands of traditional and contemporary items for sale, it's also a museum of mountain memories and memorabilia that will carry on this family legacy. If you really want a history lesson on the area spend a few hours here then drive around the area and see what living history looks like...

I originally went in to see if they had apple cider. They make it fresh every day on the machinery which is visible through the clear windows at the cash register. Lovely elderly lady apologized for running out of the fresh cider, but amazingly enough they had frozen in the plastic bottles of various sizes from pints upward. We stopped her on the way to Knoxville, TN and were so delighted that we came back and bought more on the way home to Charleston, SC. If you see the Saluda exit, take it and the store is up a hill across from the gas station.

They will let you try the homemade cider as well as the apple butter and strawberry they have made up. You will see lots of homemade jar items as well as homemade wood items. The place is ran by the owners which makes it even a better experience. The daughter was there while we were looking around and then her Mother came in. Very friendly and told us about the apple press and that her Mom makes all the canned items along with her help as well. What an amazing place they had been here for 30+ years. If you were to stop while they worked you would be able see behind them is a clear glass to the press. The Mom said she would be making more jar items soon. The stuff we tried was good. She does make sugar free for those who can not have sugar. We enjoyed stopping in and had great conversation with them both. The next time we are in the area if they are open we will stop again for sure! Oh and they sell the cider frozen so you don't have to worry about keeping it cold if your traveling , make sure to stop here if your in the area!
