You can pay lots more at a private school, but I don't think you can do better for a bright child than Fairmount.

I highly recommend not having your child go to this school unless you want them to fail. There is…read moreabsolutely no communication from this school whatsoever. This school needs to be shut down and added to the list of failed schools of San Francisco. Teachers and staff here are a complete joke, nothing is taken seriously. They wait for you to find out on your own that something is wrong without any notifications. Best part is my son is probably the smartest child in the 8th grade with one of the highest gpas in the school. Also the only child in all 8th grade to get into a private school. With all that he was still asked not to go to his final 8th grade field trip to 6 flags. It was due to him talking in hallways too much. Not sure what that has to do with taking one of my kids biggest memories away! Not fair, especially with no warnings or notifications to me his guardian.

Ok, I am biased because I work and live in the neighborhood where Paul Revere Elementary School is…read moreBUT the fact is, the Paul Revere PTA kicks booty and is comprised of a dedicated and hard-working group of parent leaders who are really focused on making a difference not just in the school but the community - and the same goes for the principal Dr. Lance Tagomori, for having the vision and insight and dedication into making the school a shining example of what it means to take learning and education to a higher level. Having such a strong cadre of parents and teachers can only bode well for the students themselves. No, I don't have a kid that goes to this school, nor do I work there - but I know a gem when I see one!

Glen Park was the twelfth and final school we toured, and we almost skipped it. After eleven tours,…read morewe had a list of great schools and were feeling set. I'm so glad we went. The building is old, but in a  "beautiful old building" way, not run-down or dreary. The rooms are big and bright, with big windows that open-which turned out to be important once Covid came along! During our tour we visited the school's Wellness Center and heard from the social worker and staff about some of what they do there. Not only was this the only school we saw highlight a Wellness Center, they emphasized that it's for all students. Social-emotional learning has been a part of each year's classroom curriculum, but kids also get the opportunity for regular visits to the center. It's a safe place for them to draw, talk, or bounce it out, and it's something every school should have.  There are lots of opportunities for parent involvement, but no pressure. The afterschool program is on-site and feels like a natural extension of the school day, not a separate program. Lots of communication, I always feel like I know what my daughter is working on and what's going on at the school. The school garden is awesome, as are the school chickens.  We're so glad we wound up here, and our youngest can't wait to start kindergarten!

I have two children in Glen Park School (will have 3 soon) and we couldn't be happier. The fact…read morethat so many teachers send or have sent their own children to the school is very telling. The community is fantastic and that is what I love most about this school. It feels like one big family. One notable thing about Glen Park School that makes it stand out is that equity is at the forefront of every single decision. From the administration to the teachers to the parent teacher organization to the volunteer opportunities... Inclusion and equity is the always at the forefront of any decision. We feel well supported at the school and highly recommend it.

Update 4/15/13: Yep, still very happy here - our son has learned to read in English and Spanish…read more Only kids leaving the program are the ones who are moving. Prior comments still stand: We enrolled our son in the dual-immersion Spanish-English program for Kindergarten this year, and have been very happy so far. The school boasts a full-time arts program, caring teachers, a renovated building, on-site After School, better food than SFUSD & no-added-sugar-for-sale policy, a new computer lab, a thriving 3-year old Spanish-English dual-immersion option in the lower grades (will grow every year until 4th grade I believe), rapidly rising parent participation & fundraising (but never enough). There are uniforms, a fairly traditional discipline policy of rewards for good behavior & consequences for bad behavior (which is exactly what our son needs), and even before-school yoga - which our son loves. There's an invigorated Parent-Teacher Committee - I spent 1 hour yesterday sorting TECA t-shirts with other parents, and another 30 minutes writing thank-you notes on Teacher Appreciation gift certificates with yet another group of parents (the teachers loved their little gifts!) Meanwhile, Spanish-speaking parents were helping out in the classrooms, testing kids on their Spanish so the teachers can provide individualized instruction to every student. Yes, the school has warts - I did mention not enough $, and test scores could be higher (but don't get me started on how test scores are NOT an accurate measure of a school's performance, especially when viewed on their own). Bottom line: the teachers are caring people who believe in the mission to nurture "the whole child" and help the kids prepare for top high schools (3 admitted to Lowell last year- huge for our size/7 admitted this year - that's unheard of!); & over $160k in scholarships were granted to other top schools. The administrators listen to good ideas, the arts program is unmatched, and parent participation is way up. Good things are happening here!

I also reported concerns about students bringing electronic cigarettes (vapes) to school and offering them to other children in the bathrooms. I communicated this serious issue to my child's teacher, but I never received a response or any follow-up support. Parents trust schools to provide a safe and supportive environment for their children. Unfortunately, my experience was that my concerns were not taken seriously, and I did not see the action or communication I expected.
