By far our favorite hotel throughout our two week vacation in France. Le Dortoir is located in…read morecentral Nice, next to lively restaurants, shopping, and a short five minute walk to the beach. I booked directly on the Le Dortoir website which guaranteed the best rates. If you book directly with them, reminder to be aware of conversation rates and foreign transaction fees since they do not have the option to book in USD. When we arrived, our room was ready and we were promptly greeted by their staff who also helped carry our luggage with us to the second floor. I believe Le Dortoir has their rooms on the second, third, and fourth floor of the building but you have to climb three sets of stairs to get to the second floor since the ground floor starts on floor 0. There is no elevator which is probably the only con. The rooms are just as pictured. Super modern, clean, and spacious. We loved the hardwood floors, rain shower, and natural lighting which came in from three large windows that spanned the entire side of the room. We booked a room with a balcony which we highly recommend as that was probably our favorite part of the room. Located in a bustling area of Nice, the balcony overlooked the town center and provided a fun area to relax, unwind, and people-watch after a long day of exploring Nice. The room includes a mini fridge, Nespresso machine and wine opener/drinking glasses. The only strange thing was that housekeeping came into our room even when we had the "Do not disturb" sign on. We thought we had forgotten to put the sign up the first day, but even after checking the second and third day, they continued to come in. We had no issues with our stuff and didn't feel the need to make a compliant but we did think that was a bit strange. They have staff in their office located on the "ground floor" (one set of stairs from the entrance) during working hours if you have questions during your stay. Overall, we had a wonderful stay here and would definitely come back next time we are in Nice.

Checking the area, we found this hotel right next to the train station. The proximity to the major sights was too good to pass and the price for the room was really reasonable. The path to the hotel from the train station is very easy. Take a right out of the station and the hotel is located right on the next bloc. Escalators will take you to the lobby upstairs. Walk through the lobby door.... and here you are! The staff was super friendly and even though we arrived very early.... around 11 am.... they got us a room. I understand that European stand is an afternoon check in. But most hotel have been very accommodating. The bar looked very inviting and the path to the room easy. Remember European standard for sizes. If you are used to travel with large American size bags, the elevators and rooms are fairly small. So, you will have an issue.... trust me! We got to the room and it s a simple format with no amenities. There s a shower gel for the shower and sink soap. There are no tissue box or coffee/ tea station. This hotel has a small pool on the first floor and no gym. I understand they offer a nice breakfast buffet but we would rather find a nice bakery on the way to the sights.

The rooms are on the second floor and I stayed in the orange room. I thought my stay was ok, since it was so hot in Nice I did want to use the AC the whole time I was on my room including sleeping. But she does tell you not to do that, which I did not like but she does live there. ISo if you are picky and need the AC on while you're in your room, don't stay here then! But I was ok with this rule. The room has its own refrigerator and she gives you water! First time I had free water at any hotel in Europe haha! I didn't like how she told us to help clean up the bathroom. I understand her reason but I just didn't think with the price you pay, that you should have to do anything. You have to wipe down the shower after you use it because she doesn't have a strong enough vent in the room. So to prevent mold, we the customers, have to wipe it down. Breakfast could have been way more..... I left all the mornings hungry! She puts fresh croissants in the oven and gives us jam and butter. Then there's a loaf of bread and tea and yogurt and oj available. That's it. There is a market across the way by the train station so stock up! She has her cool dog Rocco so if you have allergies, stay away, but he's a cool and chill dog. Overall, I had an ok experience. She lets you borrow a mat and towel for the pebble beaches so take advantage! But I probably wouldn't go back again. Only to try other places and a different location in Nice but it wasn't a super great experience.

As expressed, the experience is very much like staying in someone's home and that comes with its pros and cons. The location was excellent for site seeing and beach going. Josephine has plenty of recommendations for both rainy and sunny days, both of which we took full advantage! She has a bookshelf of guidebooks and other tourist information for you to borrow and gave us a map on our first day which was great. Wifi is free, which also helped with planning our stay. She has a really cute dog, Rocco, who helped me cope with my homesick feelings for my own dogs. I would agree that if you don't like dogs, you shouldn't stay here. I personally found having him here a major perk to a homey experience! I also agree with other reviews that I expected more from breakfast, although not in quantity but in variety. She gives more than enough food to be full all morning! Breakfast consists of fresh croissants, yogurt, OJ, tea/coffee, and assorted breads with various spreads and jams. I think it would be nice if there were a few fruits in addition. Since we stayed for several days, it would have been nice not to be eating mainly bread every morning (although delicious!) It seemed that Josephine was a bit judgmental of the guests' decisions and eating habits which was unpleasant. She made comments to my friend and me about the length of other guest's showers, made disgusted faces at our sausage and other pork products we got from the market, and made an unnecessary amount of comments in regard to money. It seemed like she felt obligated to sit with us during the entirety of breakfast, which felt a bit awkward and forced. For the price and location, I think this was a good place but I would probably try something else if I return to Nice.

My husband & I ordered the chocolate cookie with vanilla ice cream & an americano coffee for each of us. Shortly thereafter our dessert showed up (sans coffee, which we had asked for to be delivered with our dessert). My husband tried multiple times to alert a staff member to bring our coffee, but they were too interested in taking care of a pretty young woman seated nearby. I counted 5-6 times that staff members waited on her attentively, & she was seated probably 3' from myself. We finally got up to pay for our dessert & to leave. It took us some time to find someone to pay. My husband finally flagged someone down & told the man who was going to take our payment to remove the coffees from the bill. He looked toward our table to verify no coffee cups were on our table, he flagged down another staff member to ask why we didn't receive our coffee. They started talking animatedly in French, while we waited patiently to pay for our desserts. He then asked if we wanted our coffee to go, to which my husband replied "no". It was very frustrating to watch someone else getting more attentive service & whom by the way was not spending as much as we were. It shouldn't matter whether you or staying there or not, everyone should be treated the same if you are in the restaurant near the lobby. I definitely would not recommend anyone to go there to stay or eat. We are staying at a very nice hotel nearby, where everyone seems to be treated the same. If we ever return, we will return to the same hotel to stay & we would not go back the the Hermitage for any reason! I'm very sorry I asked my husband to go in there to have some dessert, it has ruined his evening.
