The Sisi Museum was one that I visited, and all day long, the palace grounds are teeming with tourists. Even if you don't enter the palace, you can walk through the grounds, enjoy the garden, people watch, and enjoy watching the horse-drawn carriages. Baroque architecture heaven!

Everything else is either closed to the public or requires an entrance fee. There is something for everyone here: the Sisi Museum, the national Library, the Spanish Riding school (home to the famous Lipizzaner horses), a Butterfly house.....you couldn't possibly see everything in a day! This is the location of the Vienna Christmas Market, where they have outdoor ice skating, lots of paved pathways where local businesses set up huts to sell sweets and decorations! This place is decked out to the max for Christmas- lights everywhere, a giant Christmas tree, carolers, and even a nativity scene! The place was well-patrolled, felt safe, and was certainly well lit! It's a huge area, with park benches around, and plenty of trees. It's a beautiful scene to take in the intricate views of City Hall and all the amazing architecture around the plaza. The landscaping is top notch! It's located about a block off the subway for easy transit. It's a pretty main station. They could've used more restrooms around here. With all the gluhwein, they need more WCs.

Rock me, Amadeus, indeed!…read more The ornate carvings, the beautiful engravings, the gorgeous flower bed/lawn leading up to it; this monument is exactly what it should be: a heartfelt homage to one of Austria's most notable native sons. As one of the most prolific composers of not just his time, but ever, Mozart is revered throughout Austria. He was a musical genius and composed over 600 pieces from the age of 5 until his death at 35. Mozart is my favorite composer, and I definitely had to come see this beautiful monument. It is in a small park of it's own, surrounded by hedges and benches. It's a nice place to sit and rest, contemplate, whatever! It's in an area with a bunch of other tourist attractions, so, although you COULD miss it, why would you? Come. Sit. Maybe even listen to a little night music..... (see what I did there?) 45/2025

Augustinerkirche has a spare elegant Gothic interior, the very opposite of baroque. In doing my research, I learned that it was built in the 14th century and was the site of Emperor Franz Joseph's wedding in 1854 to Empress Sisi. Definitely worth coming inside for a quiet moment of peaceful contemplation.

The sweeping staircase is stunning - marble, gold, frescoed ceiling. We went to the picture gallery, upstairs. It's full of paintings by the European old masters. The modernists are more my thing, but this was lovely to see and in a beautiful setting too. Highly recommend for fans of baroque, renaissance, and late gothic art. We bought a few things in the gift shop and wandered off for more Vienna sightseeing.

Interesting baroque monument to commemorate the end of the plague…read more As the Hapsburg Emperor Leopold I fled Vienna, he vowed to erect a monument if the Plague would end. The beautiful sculptures narrate the story with The Holy Trinity, angels, Leopold with his large Hapsburg chin and a victim who succumbed to the Plague.

I think his name was Milor, an emigrant from Macedonia, who has been doing tour guiding for some 15 years but just one year for Schönbrunn, but he provided the most memorable story-telling, complete with sound effects and singing the palace grounds are amazing and the palace was beautiful, but for SURE, it was our tour guide who made the experience exceptional. It did seem a bit rushed as the workers follow the group to each room. However the palace was gorgeous and definitely worth a visit.

One good reason to visit Perskirche was to attend their free daily concerts scheduled at 3pm. Normally it would be an organ concert but this month they had visiting groups from around the world (a Florida group sang during our visit). The concert lasted around 45 minutes and the both the singers and acoustics were impressive. It doesn't matter where you sit to appreciate the performance. However, the pews were quite uncomfortable for the entire duration. The seatback ended about midway up my back and had an edge that dug into it making it hard to sit up straight. I'd recommend sitting in the overflow chairs that were placed in the aisles since they were of a modern design!

Despite all the gilding, it never feels overwhelming or gaudy--just elegant and breathtaking. It's especially beautiful on a sunny day when the light streams through the windows and illuminates the entire church. From the outside, it doesn't look very large, which might make you think the interior will be small, but once you step inside, it's surprisingly spacious and impressive. Definitely add this to your must-see list when visiting Vienna!
