Such a romantic, vintage Italian nook in the north shore of Staten Island. The chef and owner Maximo and his son gave us top notch service. Definitely get reservations we walked in and sat at the bar the place was packed. The menu is extensive so definitely go with people that share. We tried the ricotta cheese with honey and then ordered it again because it was just so good with the crostinis. We also had the calamari, delicious. My friend and I came out of our comfort zone and had the brisket pasta (homemade) and it didn't disappoint. Oh and the pistachio icecream sooo good. Located in Rosebank in a beautiful decorated restaurant. When we walked in we were asked if we had a reservation on a Wednesday night in an empty restaurant. We said no , we were still seated , given the regular menu and a specials menu for the evening. As more patrons came in they were offered the pre fixed menu , which gave a full meal , appetizers, desserts included for one price. We were not offered that menu , which after we saw and heard others with that menu we decided to look to see if that menu was offered online to see what was on it. We saw the menu and realized we would have ordered from there verse the regular menu . First off - I want to make it very well known, our waiter Adrien was absolutely amazing. That alone would make us return again and again. Outstanding isn't even enough of a word to describe him.. truly phenomenal, a gem of a person. Secondly, we have only been to Vinum for all of our special occasions the last few years. Stopped into this restaurant after a nearby visit to the Alice Austen Museum. It was our first visit to Staten Island and it did not disappoint. We had the margherita pizza and spaghetti with clams. Great, classic flavors. Pizza was yummy and pasta was perfectly al dente (the clams tasted fresh too). It has a kind of 'date night' atmosphere that's unmistakable. 9/27/23... As you know I get together quarterly with 2 childhood friends. One buddy has been talking about Don Cheech since our last S.I. visit. For drinks, a couple of espresso martinis was a nice way to get our evening started. Just one for me as it was potent.:) Appetizers- We shared two. That being buffalo mozzarella & Prosciutto plus calamari with cherry peppers. Nice kick on that one. Our entrees were Double cut pork chops, chicken Marsala and veal scaloppino sorrentino. My veal dish was excellent. Dinner portions are pretty large. Our server (Jose) answered all our questions about the menu, including our drinks. Dessert, 2 pistachio gelatos and a strawberry cheesecake which was very light. It's a newer place that has Chef Massimo running the show. Just a note, for dinner you will drop some serious coin. This is one of my favorite restaurants on the Island. The food and service are always fantastic. On Wednesdays they have a really good steak deal. A porterhouse for two, with a bottle of wine and dessert for $125, which is a great value. The steak was huge and could easily feed 3 people. The food here is delicious. Ambiance is strange. Dead sound in dining area. No light music. Left to conversation only for entire experience My dining partner received a hair in her appetizer. It was in the sauce, not the food. Instead of apology, server made an excuse. Totally off base. Brought another full plate to table that wasn't asked for or warranted. Flatbread was very garlicky. Good but wouldn't order again. Carbonara had great flavors, but I believe it sat in window too long and sauce dried up. Poor timing of courses. Ossobuco is one of my favorites and this one delivered. Don Cheech is a hidden gem that is not talked about enough. I went there for the first time and both the food experience and service experience were exceptional. They start tables with an assortments of bread paired with a tomato compote which was new was refreshing to me. The dinner me and my wife ordered were well above average and cooked perfectly. Pasta, perfect Al dente. Chicken, moist and flavorful. Seafood, perfectly cooked and seasoned. I'm upset I didn't have room for dessert to try. On top of the amazing food, our waiter was friendly and cracking jokes with us and was super informative regarding recommendations. All this in a tiny little corner spot with a warm and cozy feeling. Came in on a Sunday. Parking is available on the street and it's free on sunday's. Only one table was taken in the restaurant. We came because they extended there restaurant week special and my sister is vegan so she wanted to try it. We were a party of three. My sister and I ordered from the restaurant week menu. I got the mozzarella and prosciutto app, waygu burger entree without the bun since I'm gluten free and the salted caramel martini. My sister got the lentil soup app and the eggplant Parm entree. My friend got the meatball and chicken soup app, espresso martini, and chicken Parm. It took awhile to get our drinks and even longer for the apps. Since it wasn't busy I didn't understand the long wait. Both of our martinis were good. My friend said it's the best espresso martini he's had. They don't skimp on the alcohol either My mozzarella app was good. It has a nice seasoning on it and the slices were thick. My sister liked her lentil soup. She ate the whole thing. My friend and I both agreed that there meatballs are in the top 3 of our favorite meatballs. They were solid with a good flavor. They do have cheese in the middle. Not a huge fan but something that's not a big deal. My friend liked his soup but wish the pasta was regular pasta and not cheese tortellini. About a 15-20 wait and our entrees come out. I immediately see my burger is burnt. My friend's chicken Parm dish is huge. Could be shared between 2-3 people. My sister looked good. The vegan cheese was actually melted. I only took a two bites of the burger and didn't eat the rest. The fries were the star of the dish. My sister liked her eggplant pa but said it lacked seasoning. My friend didn't end up eating his chicken Parm because it was drowning in sauce and he likes his chicken crispy. He said the pasta and sauce wasn't bad. My sister and I ordered the flour less chocolate cake because it was vegan/gluten free. It was a good cake but could've used ice cream or something to cut through the richness of the cake. It didn't taste like banana for some reason. My friend thought we weren't serious but he tried it and said the same thing. Not a bad taste just unexpected. The waitress was so attentive, nice, sociable. I can't say enough good things about her. We want to come again to try other vegan/gluten free food. I think it's a bit ridiculous to $7 extra for gluten free pasta but maybe it's homemade? I'll find out next visit. read more

I would like to start off this review by saying that the food I had at Don Cheech was fantastic. When my girlfriend and I sat down to order appetizers, the table next to us expressed their disgust with their meals. As soon as the table left, the owner badmouthed the table seconds after they left. I understand that it must be frustrating when a table is not satisfied with parts of the meal at a restaurant. The service tonight was extremely concerning and put a bad taste in my mouth. We sat at our table ready to begin eating dinner at 7:30. The check was not brought to our table until 9:30!! I ordered a Cuban Old Fashioned cocktail that I was looking forward to enjoying with my meal. I never send back drinks and could not even take a sip of the cocktail. When I ordered a new drink, I didn't understand when I got the check why I was still charged for a cocktail I sent back and didn't drink. My girlfriend ordered the tricolor salad on the menu. Instead of the expected tricolor salad ingredient arugula being included in this salad, there was spinach in the salad instead! My girlfriend did not mention it to the server but when going out to eat, it is preferred that what you are ordering matches the description of said item on the menu! Side note: my girlfriend has ordered the tricolor salad before at Don Cheech and loves it, because it includes her favorite vegetable arugula! She felt uncomfortable saying anything about her order after hearing complaints about customers from the owner!! When the check was finally brought over almost 2 hours after entering the restaurant, the Cuban Old Fashioned still remained on the bill as well as the beer I ordered! When I asked why the cocktail I didn't drink was still on the bill, Lisette said that she had asked the owner to take it off the bill, but he refused. Why was this something that happened? If a product ordered from a restaurant is not to a customer's liking, isn't the customer expected to have the item in question removed from their bill? I was initially going to pay the balance on the bill, but it had really bothered me that the simple action of removing the cocktail from the bill needed to be such a big ordeal. After being told that there was nothing she could do, we begrudgingly paid our bill-part of paid with gift card, the remaining balance in cash and a 20% tip on a total including a drink that I should not have had to pay for!! We walked out of the restaurant and less than ten feet from the restaurant, I realized that I needed to speak my mind. I asked to speak with the owner. I had told him that I did not understand why I was charged for an item I barely consumed. He asked what drink I had ordered. I told him "The Cuban Old Fashioned" cocktail. He said "Yes it contains whiskey. You don't like whiskey?" I told him that it was not drinkable. I could not even take a sip of it and that I have very rarely, if ever, sent back a drink at an establishment! He spoke with Lisette and the $17 for the cocktail was refunded to me. As I received this money back from Massimo, Lisette showed me the bill and was talking me through what a 20% tip would look like on the initial $140.00 bill. She told me that a $28 tip would be an acceptable tip for a bill of this size. What she failed to acknowledge was that my girlfriend and I had already left all of the necessary money to pay our bill and provide a 20% tip with the bill at the table!! Lisette made the whole situation so confusing!! Why was I being told I needed to leave a tip again!! As I got into the car with my girlfriend who was waiting patiently during the long process of me getting my rightfully owed money back, I told her that I gave them an additional $28 and inadvertently gave them a second tip on the bill!! We were both besides ourselves and believe that we were tricked into provided another tip on a total that did not accurately reflect the cost of our meal! My girlfriend called the restaurant. Lisette answered the phone and said she would go outside the restaurant to provide the money owed to us. As she gave us the money, she apologized and said that all confusion was due to the owner of restaurant. She said that whenever he is involved, there is confusion and mess. The customer service in this establishment has left me speechless. In a post-pandemic world where people are less incentivized to go out to eat, why were we treated the way we were treated this evening? We just wanted to have a relaxing end of the week dinner out!! Why are customers being shaken down by restaurant employees for extra money when they have not done anything wrong? This was one of the worst service experiences I have had at a restaurant. I will never give Don Cheech business again!! read more

Don Cheech has an upscale vibe in its decor, music and brick walls. Tinned ceilings, high back chairs and red check tablecloths make for an elegant night out. We had a pleasant surprise, get there before seven and it is happy hour even at the tables. Half price wine by the glass, I think bottles are Tuesdays. The four of us had their prix fixed dinner, which is priced at 34 dollars. Appetizer, entree and dessert are so plentiful that all at the table must order the price fixed dinner, because it would be too tempting to try to share it. Take home is the solution. Wednesday night is Tomahawk steak night. You get a bottle of wine, steak for two, two side dishes and dessert for 125 dollars. An expensive meal, but a great value for a tomahawk steak, sides, wine and dessert. read more

Went for father's day yesterday, not sure if that impacted usual service. Was able to easily make a reservation online - called to confirm once they opened. For appetizer we had the calamari and baked clam duo. The peppers in the calamari were delicious. The clams were good but some of them were gritty. For dinner we had the Bufala mozzarella pizza and filet minon - both were delicious. The peppercorn sauce made the filet memorable for sure. Overall from when we sat down at 6 we didnt get the apps until 7 which felt like a really long time. The bread basket had really small pieces of bread and the breadsticks were still in their plastic packaging which made it seem cheap. Overall good but pricey, would take some time to go back but would come back. read more

I was so looking forward to the opening of this restaurant. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. It really surprises me that a very experienced owner would have the most inexperienced staff. The service was subpar. I ordered a glass of Moscato, I didn't care for it at all. I had asked the waitress if I received the wrong wine. The manager came over and gave me a 10 minute explanation on where the wine came from. He didn't offer me something else or take it off my bill. I took two sips and left it. Ordered fried calamari which stunk, had no taste or seasoning. I will say our three entrees were absolutely delicious. Pasta was tasty and cooked perfectly! I won't be going back.
