Went here for lunch during Providence Restaurant week (Jan 2017). Lovely place, great décor. Service was unobtrusive and friendly. Loved the menu, restaurant week choices and enjoyed the atmosphere. . What I didn't love was the food. It was just ok. Oh it was very fresh, well plated, beautiful presentation - just all of it very bland. I got the individual nachos, (NACHOS MACHOS -Corn tortillas topped w/ refried beans, cheese, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, & chipotle. ) as my first course. It came out deconstructed but were fun to eat. However, the tortilla chips were too thick and hard to eat, the refried beans were obviously homemade, but had no flavor. I expected some salt, perhaps bacon or fat added to the beans, but no . It was awkward to eat and I just gave up. But there was cheese, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, & chipotle. .I understand that if you want to make vegetarian refried beans, that's great, but then there are other seasoning to create a flavor level there. My friend had the SOPA DE TORTILLA - Rich Guajillo broth soup. Served with corn & tortilla chips and avocado. She said that was very tasty. For my 2nd course I had (CAMARONES AL MOJO DE AJO - Large shrimps sautéed w/ roasted garlic & tomatillo sauce. Served with rice & beans. Everything very fresh, big shrimp, ok sauce, beans bland and rice had no flavor. Tasted like white rice. My friend had the BURRITO - Stuffed w/ shredded y friend had chicken, rice, beans, cheese. Served with Guacamole, Sour cream, & Pico de Gallo. She hates anything spicy, buy she said it was the least flavorful burrito she had even had. Again, all fresh just no flavor. Dessert was good. Maybe I am spoiled from having lived in SF, Texas and Miami, but I have gotten used to fresh flavorful Mexican food, so not a fan of anything that doesn't meet those standards. read more

Very good food. Went here on a Saturday after work and had about an hour wait. Yes that long but well worth it! Got tacos, sangrias, quest dip (very gooey cheesy). This place has so much potential as it had beautiful outdoor seating on the street as it was restaurant week, but the staff is all over the place and it didn't help the fact that they could've used at least 2 more servers. Food was very good, but portions could've been bigger, especially when you compare it to other Mexican restaurants. Biggest issue I had with this place was that I had to wait 25 mins to receive a to go box because staff kept forgetting to get it for me and that's just not ok at all! read more

We have been coming here for years and sad to say this may be the last time. Asked for a table for 2 was told we couldn't have any of the empty tables because they may have large parties coming in and they would have to join the tables together. We sat in the corner but we got up and moved to the bar. We spoke to the bartender and she moved us to one of the prohibited tables for 2. The drinks were good and nachos were ok. We proceeded to order an order of fajitas because we didn't want a huge meal. The dish was enormous filled with all the condiments and in the corner was a side plate of sliced chicken.. 8 slices to be exact on top of a mountain of onions and peppers. I wasn't expecting a huge portion but it all came in one plate. Tables next to us ordered fajitas for 2 which is now the portion which used to be the single portion on the sizzling plate. I'm not complaining about the fact that everyone needs to make money but don't try to fool the customers. Change the description on the menu. It doesn't come on a sizzling plate. I doubt I wooo ever go back here since there are so many choices! Btw the tables that were saved for big parties never filled up. The hostess had no connection to the inside of the restaurant or what was happening. I get it good help is hard to find but why not take care of the customers that are in the restaurant rather than the ones who may come in. In "little Italy" aka the Hill, I choose to eat Mexican... as per usual. I love date night here. Every entree I've ever had has been spectacular, last night was no different. My man had the braised pork shank, which was so juicy and tender, to die for. I had the flank steak which was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The drinks here are phenomenal! Like amazing, my go to spot for a spicy jalapeno margarita. We tried the black bean soup, it was tasty but a bit on the plain side. As well as the shrimp ceviche which was on the sweet side? I'm used to the tartness from the lime juice, it was no means bad just different. I always sit at the bar and have spectacular service. I have been coming to Don José Tequilas since the late 1990s. Its always been a great spot for interesting takes on Mexican classics. Recently I went there with family (5 adults and 2 kids). The food was fine but in a lifetime of going to restaurants and working in them for large swaths of my life, I have never seen maneuvers by someone on a waitstaff as horrible, as offensive, and I am not a psychiatrist, but as seemingly sociopathic as those pulled off by our server, Yuli P. Some of her antics were just annoying, like the incessant and transparent efforts to up-sell everything behind a plastic smile, or asking my 8 year old nephew if he wanted another lemonade and after both parents said no, twice, brought him one anyway. Other moves were unforgivable and if I were the owner of the restaurant or a chef in the kitchen I would be livid. Yuli P. got my order wrong. Obviously that is not a problem, I mean everyone gets orders wrong, I have gotten them wrong, it happens all the time. What matters is how this is handled. Instead of saying sorry I got it wrong, let me get you what you ordered, Yuli P. kept insisting that I would be ok with the wrong dish, trying no less than three times to serve it to me in between serving the rest of the table, as if I would just give up if she kept at it, and accept it. The dish I ordered, by the way, was green enchiladas, which is the same dish I have ordered every single time I have come to the restaurant since I started going there. The next move that Yuli P did should have gotten her fired. She took the red enchiladas that I didnt order back into the kitchen, and just poured a cup of green chile sauce over it! bringing the red/green sauce garbage mix back out to the table and putting it in front of me, like everything was great. I was livid and this was just a ridiculously unprofessional thing to do, and I cant imagine the chef would have been happy knowing that this was done to his/her plate. The most aggravating part though was that the whole time she never once apologized, or acted like a human who made a mistake or recognized that there was even a problem with what she was doing. It was like a politician who just lies baldly and boldly to your face. It was so insulting that she would try this and think she could try to put one over on me, but to act like I was the one that was making all the issues up was just too much. I got the last laugh though. At the end of the meal she put an automatic tip on the bill (although we were only 7 and the bill stated that they do this only for parties of 8 or more). I understand and support automatic tips in these situations, there are a lot of horrible customers out there, and it's important to protect servers from getting robbed after serving a large table. The joke was on her though as the family member who picked up the check routinely tips in the 30-40% range. He didnt see that she had added the automatic tip (which she didn't inform us had been added btw, as she is supposed to) and proceeded to tip her twice. Realizing that she had given herself a tip, and annoyed that she hadn't said anything almost causing him to tip twice, plus everything else, he left the automatic tip, scratched off the amount that he would have tipped, and the difference between the two, lost her 30 dollars. Came here on a date with my bf two weekends ago. We had no reservation as they don't do them for a party of two which I thought was a little odd considering COVID but that's cool. We wanted to sit inside but unfortunately the girl that sat us didn't ask us where we'd like to be sat. She barely even looked at us tbh. She sat us and literally tried to run away but I caught her to ask her where the restroom was. She seemed super annoyed with me but pointed me to the way none thr less. I got to the bathroom and there were what sounded like a group of ROWDY girls in the ONE PERSON female restroom. I waited.... and waited... and waited listening all the while to them screaming and what sounded like falling into the walls. Finally a woman came up to also use the restroom. She eventually went into the mens room as those girls still hadn't come out. She came out and warned me that if I use the mens room there is pee everywhere and boy she wasn't lying! It was DISGUSTING!! I'll tell ya, thank goodness I lost weight because I has to all but LEVITATE over that freakin toilet all the while standing in pee in my suede pumps! Moving on. The food was ok. Nothing special. I like the guacamole and the tableside service it came with. I ordered a Moscow mule and it came in a HUGE, FULL margarita glass and was NOT in fact a Moscow mule lol. Not gonna lie, whatever it was was good though so I drank it. Lol Last but not least.... it took FOREVER to get our bill and ONE to go box. Smh. We had to ask three different people for the box. It was ridiculous. I also had to pee the whole time we were waiting due to the HUGE drink they gave me and I couldn't use their bathroom because upon my 2nd arrival there was yet another person(s) in the womens room and when I tried to use the mens it was 10× WORSE than it was the first time I used it. Go hungry. Big hearty portions of yummy feel-good food. You can't go wrong w/ any of the burritos (get it with all the sauces) or the margaritas (served in those classic and generous margarita glasses), both made with lots of flavors and, you guessed it, love. The interiors are a bit dim - even on sunny days - but the seating is very comfy, encouraging you to stay a while and have one more serving of their perfect chips and salsa. And, service has been friendly each time I've been. One note: Don Jose's seems committed to serving everyyyyyy beverage with a big straw. A big, earth-polluting, ocean-threatening, nonrecyclable straw. If this is of concern to you (and it should be), request "no straws" with your beverages. Every bit helps. read more

A bit disappointed with the food here. I got the Nacho appetizer and a Steak Torta (sandwich). The nachos were crispy with lots of cheese on them, but they were not my favorite. Today I placed a take out order for vegetarian enchiladas, chicken chimichanga burrito, chips, salsa, and queso. I was so impressed with our meal! The portion sizes are well worth the price. Haven't been here in years and when I did return it confirmed why I have stayed away for so long. Sat at the bar and as always they have the worst bartenders. Extremely slow service but yet these bartenders always look frazzled and confused. You would think they had a 30 seat bar. I will be perfectly honest, I never even heard of this place before December 30, 2022. After going to see Disney On Ice, we were in need of some lunch, as a bucket of popcorn does not count as lunch. Anyway, my sister says she knows this place on Federal Hill called Don Jose's, so we pile into our vehicles and make our way there. We get there and sit at a corner booth table, and after looking at the menu, I decided to go for the soft tacos. Then came the hard part: deciding on chicken, pork or steak. I went, well, I had ham for dinner last night, so I opted for the steak tacos. Ohhh man!! Those tacos were delicious!! I mean, the chips and guacamole we got for an appetizer are one thing - and I never had guacamole before, but darn it, that guacamole was good!! - but those soft tacos were so good, I just wanted to keep eating until there was nothing left on the plate. I even ate the leftover chips, because there was no way I was letting those go to waste. Oh, and Mom really loved the mussels she had for dinner. All I saw was a plate full of shells when she was done. After we sufficiently stuffed ourselves, I all but waddled like a stuffed armadillo back to the car. And that is my first trip to Don Jose's. Can't be beat! I came here two days in a row for lunch, it was such a memorable experience. Mind you, it's restaurant week here in Providence, so the deal is incredible. An appetizer, entree, and dessert... anything off the menu, no limitations, for $12.95. First of all, the restaurant itself is well-aligned with the theme without being gaudy like some others. It's dark with lots of fake plants and hanging lights. The service is unbeatable! Both days we came here we had different servers, and both were incredibly attentive, friendly, and helpful. Our first lunch was a belated birthday lunch for my mom. Our waiter overheard us making a toast to her and later on surprised ALL of us by playing the Happy Birthday song, putting a candle in her ice cream, and bringing out a sombrero and a shot of tequila. We were stunned that he had overheard and taken the initiative to do that for us, since we hadn't told him. It was an unforgettable birthday that's for sure! As far as the food goes, between my three courses a visit, and trying everyone else's food, I have yet to find a single weakness in their menu. The nachos were wonderful, the enchiladas-delicious, the ceviche-flavorful, the fajitas-classic, the tres leches-luscious, the chocolate tamale-decadent, and so on and so on. I could continue with the food porn for hours. But I can hear my stomach start to growl, so I will save myself from indulging in a late night snack. Just go to Don Jose Tequilas. You won't be sorry! Easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in RI, and I used to live and eat Mexican food in LA once upon a time, so I'm pretty sure my opinion on the matter doesn't suck. High prices but mediocre quality. My wife and I went here expecting the restaurant to serve more elevated Mexican as would be justified by the prices. She ordered an ultimate margarita and cheese enchiladas roja. I ordered the margarita picante and the combo azteca (a chile relleno and chicken enchilada). The waitress brought out the complimentary chips and salsa, both of which were quite good, but had to take my margarita back to get its rim salted. When the main courses came out my wife's dish had to be sent back because she got chicken enchiladas, not cheese as was ordered. Both of the dishes were pretty average (neither bad nor good - just unremarkable) and the portions were on the small size. For the price, I don't think I'd be back. read more

I have spent thousands of dollars here this year because it was my favorite restaurant. I also would order takeout from here at least twice a month. Always excellent food and service. I even had a birthday celebration planned here in a few weeks. The service and bad food I received on my takeout order tonight ensures I will never return here again. I can't believe how I was treated as a frequent customer. I ran back in after I picked up my takeout order because I thought there was an error on the bill. A man, who I assumed to be the owner, came up to me and actually chin checked me and said "What's the problem?" He then took my receipt from me, threw it on the bar in front of the waitress and walked away. The waitress was nice enough, but I'm pretty sure that guy who chin checked me was the owner, so I'm done. For some reason the food was also horrible tonight, which helped make my decision to abandon my favorite restaurant easier. I ordered a vegetarian enchilada and it had bagged salad lettuce in it. The rude guy basically ensured that this place is going to lose thousands of dollars from someone who basically would have been a lifetime customer and who has already supported this place for years. Chin checking isn't how you deal with valued customers. A simple "Can I help you." and a better attitude would have made me write the bad food off as maybe a bad night. I usually never write reviews, but the service at the bar was just God awful. I try to be understanding if it's super busy, of course Friday nights are busy. I used to be a busser, barback, and waitress. We (2) were sat at the bar--not a problem the hostess working on 10FEB23 at 7pm was great. The male bartender who served us... not so much. He never greeted us and or made us feel welcome. When asked about the cerviche special he provided no information on taste or plating--not a great sell. He had this "I'd rather not be here" attitude. If that's the case, then don't work. This is a huge turn off for guests, even if it is bar service. We got our food extremely quickly, yet most of it was lukewarm. Some of the cheese in the empanadas was still pretty solid--that's not the bartender's fault. When I asked if we could get chips and salsa, he acted as if that was too troublesome. It's not our fault that we were served so quickly. All customers deserve complete and satisfactory service. I thought perhaps maybe he didn't care for us as guests, but other guests around us seemed to receive the same "I couldn't careless" attitude. Another guest asked for clarification on the difference between a chimichanga and enchilada, he gave her this unsure sounding answer. She seemed to be confused and just ordered something. Three ladies sat at the bar as well. Two of their dishes came out before the third--the third dish was the fresh guacamole. Sure that takes time.. but it's all raw ingredients put together. Not even necessarily table side as it was a bar order. Between the lack luster bartender and sub par food service I find it hard to believe I will be returning. I've enjoyed Don Jose's before a couple times and was excited to come this evening. But the service just left an awful taste in my mouth. Customers never want to feel like they are a burden. Again, I'd understand if I had asked for complicated orders or tons of substitutions on a busy night, etc. We ordered empanadas, a shrimp and rice dish, one alcoholic beverage, and a coke. I lived in San Antonio, Texas, so my standards are pretty high for Mexican food... Overall I had a good time because I was there celebrating a friend's birthday and was hanging out with friends. I hate giving 2s on yelp, but there were some major cringe-worthy flaws during the dinner that won't have me coming back for more. The pros: the tableside guac is delicious. They make it right by the table so it's muy fresh. We had one really great server who went the extra mile and brought my friend complementary fried ice cream and a tequila shot at the end of our meal. That was incredibly thoughtful and made the night so festive and fun. Another pro is that they can accommodate large groups of people, we had 10 and they fit us at a table easily. The cons: the service (besides that one nice server) was pretty atrocious. One of the waiters spilled several cups of cold water on my back so I was cold and wet for the majority of my meal.... Honestly this is fine, mistakes happen... But no one offered to compensate for the spill! I was a waitress before, and that is service 101, to be able to apologize for your mistakes and offer compensation when things don't go right. I ended up asking for some sort of compensation, which always feels awkward. But I'm glad I did because the food is overpriced. Extra chips and salsa cost money. Extra chips with the already-paid-for guac cost money. Splitting a plate costs an extra $5. The food items are all on the pricier side, which I normally would be okay with if the food tasted good.... Mostly all the food besides the tableside guac is not amazing. I got the paella; please do not get this! The seafood was chewy, the rice was mushy, and left me feeling sad that I chose the paella. The mango marguerita was overly sweet and had that fake taste of mangoes. The tamale I got was actually fine and tasted like your standard Mexican American tamale. Don Jose, the night I came to eat at your restaurant was not your best shining night. I may have chosen the wrong dishes or come on a bad night for service. You may have other nights that are much better, and I just didn't experience them. It was the perfect storm. I would've given you a higher rating if your service or price or food made up for the lack in the other categories, but it wasn't your best night. Only giving it 4 stars because I feel like it was a bit overpriced. But overall, the service was honestly amazing. I loved my waitress! & the food was pretty darn great. Chips & salsa: Could never go wrong with that. They are generous with the amount that they give you while you're waiting for your food :) Chicken flautas: Amazing! loved every bite of them. Beans: yum! All i need to say. Rice: could have used a bit more flavor, but were not bad combined with the beans. Jamaica: One of the best that I've tried, they were spot on with that. Burrito: Only tried a bite, but very good quality carne asada. For some reason, the water tasted weird which is why I ordered a jamaica after. I was very satisfied with my flautas though. And all delicious, even the salsa and chips which, in writing reviews, I realize I have issues with in that I can never stop eating them. They added a margarita on to the restaurant week deal for $5 each and it was stronger than $5! It was my partners birthday, which they found out from us talking, and brought us EVEN MORE ICE CREAM and lit it on fire with tequila. The server said that he had been working there for a long time and he loved it, and loves making the birthday ice cream. It makes me like a place more knowing that the employees actually still enjoy working there (knowing a handful who work in the service industry and how hard that is to come by). read more

I think that's the consensus among most of the reviews. It is hot though, and I think that's noteworthy! The atmosphere is what I like the most. Servers were very friendly. Cute little place, good service, and mediocre food. Our waitress was very friendly and smiled the whole time. I read the reviews beforehand so I was sort of expecting the food to be a little high end. As much as I wanted to love the food, we all laughed and said we would've been better off somewhere else (like California Taco). When we arrived, the place was full but they managed to pull tables together for us so that was great. We started off with the calamari (it was cooked nicely but there wasn't much flavor at all) and the nachos machos (way too much guac and not enough cheese). There were 4 of us so we each ordered our own entree. I ordered the chicken tacos; not much going on there. My bf ordered the grilled NY sirloin steak medium rare and I don't even know what they sent out because it was so thin and over done. The other two entrees were unevenly proportioned so they ended up sharing with each other. I really don't want to trash their food but I've been to a few Mexican restaurants and this place is at the bottom of my list. On a side note, we did order a few drinks throughout the night and even though they wimp out on the alcohol, the drinks do taste okay. Just a heads up, you might want to get your margarita on the rocks though because we had half a cup of sugar and the rest was all foam. read more

One of the best calamari that I ever had. Tasty, soft and the spicy sauce were just perfect. Patron margarita delicious!!! Worth the wait for a table. read more
