On a whim one Saturday we went back to this local delicious spot, and I had forgotten just how good it is! Located in an unassuming strip mall it is immediately welcoming when you walk into the space. There are tables and booths and fun bright music playing. You can take a seat and almost instantly someone is there to greet you. We perused the menu a bit and tried a few things I had never tried like elite street corn, nachos and their famous guacamole. Delicious! The flavors pop and I have to admit I would eat that guacamole by the bucket if possible! We ended up splitting a veggie burrito but also had plenty to take home. (Note if you order the guacamole it comes with chips.) There is also a salsa bar with some free items and some slightly priced items to add to orders. They do not serve salsa and chips to all customers which I frankly love, as that isn't true to culture but rather a more Americanized addition. You can buy them of course but with so many other delicious offerings why would you!?! Absolutely a delicious spot and we will return much sooner! read more

There are so many amazing things about this place. First, it's the best guacamole I've ever had. It has more tomato and onion and spice than most and it's fresh and bright. I don't know how else to explain it. The queso is delicious. They have a salsa bar, and I'm not joking when I say there are a lot of delicious homemade salsas on the salsa bar. You have to buy a basket of chips, but it's very inexpensive and so worth it for the salsa bar! Lastly, the Al pastor is the bomb. The inside is really nice, the owners are so gracious and remember us when we come back each time. Don't sleep on this place--it's perfect for a weekday dinner or a weekend date night! read more

The food here really hits the spot. It's the closest I've came to authentic Mexican cuisine. It does not taste better than the Mexican food. I get back home in Los Angeles but it's definitely a good spot to check out. The servers and the hosts are decent. I do recall that my server was taking so long to come back to our table and every time we would look up, we catch our gossiping with coworkers near the kitchen area. Was kind of annoying because we needed a refills and it wanted to order other things to go. Anyways, the margaritas were really good. They have three different sizes you can order which I like. My favorite part is the ambience when you walk in. It feels like you stepped into a Mexican restaurant at a Villa. All of their furniture and display are handmade handpainted, and they are beautiful works of art. I definitely recommend this place if you're in the mood to sit down and get some Mexican food. Came in for a late night Sunday dinner with my husband. We were greeted quickly and told to sit anywhere we'd like. We started the meal with chips and queso. I thought the chips tasted fresh and were warm. The queso has more flavor than your typical restaurant queso. For my meal, I had the arroz con pollo. This was very good and I thought all the chicken in it was quality pieces. The waiter was attentive and friendly. They also have a salsa bar that is complimentary. I didn't walk up there to visit it, but my husband said it includes limes, pickled onions, salsas, etc. Overall, I will return here. This is a solid spot to satisfy a craving! read more

We have been coming here since they opened several years ago now and the service and food has always been great. They have a full bar, a salsa bar and lot of different dishes to choose from. They are close to the UofI campus located in a strip mall so there's tons of parking. They can also accommodate large groups. The drinks are always strong yet balanced. I had the black margarita. I can't honestly remember what it had in it but it reminded me of grape kool-aid I ordered the steak nachos and the chips stay crunchy and there's a ton of steak and queso on them. One of my favorite items on the menu Hubby got the birria soup. It's a huge bowl of authentic birria soup and it has a ton of meat and is very filling. Great for a cold day or if you have a cold it'll clear it up. Absolutely love this place give it a try you won't be disappointed. read more

As first time patrons of Don Juan's Taqueria, we were pleasantly greeted by one of the family owners as we were seated. He proudly gave us a brief summary on the history of his family's successful business. We learned that this particular location was established in 2019 and has been thriving in the community since its grand opening. We can see why, too! The highly welcoming staff legitimately treats you like family (& not like the red-headed step-child. More like the long lost favorite abuelita. Lol!) We were given free reign of the salsa bar that absolutely has something for everyone. Geeen salsa, red salsa, spicy, mild... dealer's choice! The drinks were flavorful with a good kick of tequila. Nothing like other places that seem full of sugar and syrup. You can tell these are made with high quality ingredients. The entrées boast traditional flavors inclusive of my birria tacos that are made with actual goat meat and are served with a side of goat broth for dipping. SO FREAKING GOOD!!!! The moral of the story is that you should absolutely carve out some time to go treat yourself at Don Juan's Taqueria! The margarita flight is only $9.99 for 3 generous pours!!!! It's a sign! Overall, pretty good experience here. Came in on a Sunday evening, and was greeted and sat quickly. Drinks came quick. Table was a little dirty with some chip crumbs left on it. We started off with a small queso. It had good flavor, and wasn't a boring cheese dip you get at some Mexican places. For my meal- I had the three taco combo with asada meat. The tacos were good, and really enjoyed the salsa bar with toppings (yes it's all complimentary). The rice also had good flavor too. Overall, nothing was out of the world, but everything tasted good. Only improvement I have for this place would be to make sure all of the tables are clean if you are going to allow people to sit anywhere. read more

Get the elote, get the elote, get the elote... can't say this often enough. It is simply delicious with char marks, which really brings out the sweet in the corn. You can also choose your flavor. I went with tajin of course and I forgot what the other choices were. I had a torta with carnitas. It was huge and delicious, just how I like it. My friend had the veggie burrito and she was in veggie heaven. Good vegetarian options are hard to find and often just an afterthought and not well executed. She loved this one though and I have a feeling that we will have to come back again. The guacamole is a rather large order and contains a lot of cilantro and onions. So very good. Also they do have margarita flights, but we opted in just a regular margarita. Big and potent and so tasty. AND... our glasses had blinky lights on them... how fun is that? There is also a salsa and veggie bar where you can help yourself to things like peppers, pickled onions, all sorts of salsas and so on. I loved the idea. Also since it's in a strip mall setting, there is plenty of free parking available. You owe it to yourself to give this place a try. read more

I might have given it 4 stars, except my wife loved it. The atmosphere was nice, and the food was good. They had a salsa bar. To be fair, I am very stingy with giving 5 stars to any Mexican restaurant because I love Mexican more than any other cuisine, and my standards for salsas are ridiculously high. I have had better Mexican in Indianapolis, but it was in the northwest area of the city, and it was quite a few years ago, and I can't remember anything else about the place. If you are taking the south bypass, I'd say that you couldn't go wrong with choosing Don Juan. read more

Located in a strip mall near the BMV, this is a really nice choice for Mexican on the south side. Extensive menu including "goat birria" and that's what I chose. The bowl of broth and meat was piping hot, not greasy and full-flavored. Now I know goat and this was not it but no matter because the beef was tender and plentiful. Accompanied by 4 tortillas and a plate of salsa, cilantro and onions. I asked for more tortillas which were delivered quickly (only 95 cents more) because the bowl of birria was huge. The place is nicely appointed and they have a variety of margaritas. At 1:00 there were few tables taken but it got crowded within an hour. I rate the Birria as among the best in town and look forward to returning to try other items on the menu. Friendly server too. read more

Ok it's not in the location. Agreed. BUT it's fabulous. The inside is really pretty and clean (which is something I check thoroughly) and we were seated immediately. First off they have margarita flights!!!! You get to select three flavors and I had the lime, guava, and triple berry. I don't really like flavored margaritas but the guava was so good we got a regular sized version once we finished our flights! They have a salsa/toppings bar!!! This was amazing. Like 7 different types of salsa! The chips were a dollar a basket but I had no problem with that. It was pretty big. We had steak tacos and carnitas. So tender and limited fatty pieces. They were done if the best I've had anywhere. Finally the service was amazing. The server took his time answering our questions. First off, Our Waitress Laura took amazing care of my Fiance and myself, singlehandedly some of the best service I've had in recent memory and she knew the menu so well! She was able to point us in the right direction first our menu choices and she was spot on! The Al Pastor taco stole the show it was an absolute flavor bomb and the Quesabirria was mouthwatering. Elote was awesome as well and was served fresh and hot and the guac was excellent! We will be back for sure!!! We stopped here for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty crowded. That said, the interior is pretty big and so there was no issue getting a table and parking in their shared lot was easy. This place is moderately priced, but the food is so good and there are so many options. Our server was with us quickly and got our drinks orders fast, allowing us to order in a swift manner. I got the birria tacos, which were $15 for 3 decently large tacos. Let me just say these were the best birria tacos I have ever had!!! They were made with goat meat, as opposed to beef, and it was so tender, with a shell that was the perfect crunchiness. The self-serve salsa bar was a nice touch and their spicy avocado was my favorite, and was the perfect compliment for my tacos. read more

They make a solid carnitas burrito here. Carnitas burritos are my second-favorite kind of burritos, and Don Juan Taqueria does the carnitas burrito genre justice. The carnitas inside the burrito are plentiful and nicely shredded, as well as juicy. This is important -- you need juicy carnitas. The burrito comes with rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and french fries. Yes, fries are in the burrito! This is because the carnitas burrito is called a California Burrito on the menu. So if you want this particular burrito that I'm writing about, order a California burrito with carnitas. (On a tangential note: The burritos you find in California don't have fries in them, for the most part. I'm not sure where this need to add papas fritas to a burrito came from, nor do I understand why restaurants need to label this type of burrito a California burrito. Maybe someone can help me understand.) My kids ordered a BRC burrito to share (beans, rice and cheese). They liked it, but the cheese that was used was a white and slightly spicy kind, so my kids were complaining about how spicy it was. I tasted it and yes, it did have a little kick to it -- kind of like pepper jack cheese. The dining room is super cute, with both booth seating and table seating. There's a huge salsa bar that's available for you to help yourself. I didn't this time, but I'll be sure to try some of their salsas when I come back. read more

We stopped in here after a day of volunteering. There's never a time that chips and salsa don't sound good. I almost did not want to write this review because I want to keep this place to myself. They have a decent sized parking lot that they share with the other businesses in the strip mall that it is located. It is right around the corner from UIndy There is a good size dining area and bar seating available. The bar is a full service bar and they have some AWESOME signature cocktails, a lot of which have fresh fruit....mmmmm. They were very tempting. One of the berry sangrias was calling me, so I had to answer. And that drink was good. The restaurant has a self serve salsa bar that you can choose the salsa to your liking. They have a board that lists the restaurant's daily drink and food specials. Be sure to check it out. One thing that I noticed about this place is that they did not have complimentary salsa and chips, like most Mexican food restaurants. The service there is friendly and helpful. After perusing the menu, there was two things that I had to have, the hot Cheetos covered elote and the torta with chorizo. It only took about 5 minutes for me to get my meal. It was fresh and hot. The torta was one of the best sandwiches that I had in a long time. It was packed with flavor and very tasty. I highly recommend it. The elote was delicious and I highly recommend that as well. You may be wondering if everything was so great, why not a 5-star rating. Well, when my bill came, I gave them my credit card and after about 5 minutes, my server came back and said the machine or internet was down and asked if I had cash, which I did not. So, I had to run to the ATM to get some cash to pay my check. Outside of that issue, this restaurant is easily a 5-star rating. I highly recommend checking this place out. Don Juan's Taqueria has popped up many times on my search for Mexican food, but I always seemed to choose something closer. I finally made my way here on Valentine's Day, hoping they wouldn't be too crowded. Luckily they were not crowded at all. I ordered food to go but sat inside the restaurant for about 15 minutes waiting on my food. The first thing I noticed is that the staff seems to love working there and with each other. One guy was singing in the kitchen and the waiters were telling jokes to each other and laughing. I LOVED seeing people who love their job. It's so rare to see that anymore and it was really refreshing! I ordered a steak burrito, small queso and churros. The burrito was good. The green salsa they gave as a side was the BEST I have ever had! I could drink it! The queso was not my thing. It was very very thick and had an off flavor for me.
