I was craving their chocolate flourless raspberry hazelnut cake today which prompted me to come back and write this review, and see if they have any locations in the US :D All the desserts are absolutely gorgeous and delicate with rich flavor and texture. I dare you to walk in and not purchase anything from their range of tarts, cronuts, donuts, condiments, danishes or mini bar cakes. I drove that 20 mins I mentioned to try one of their much talked about cronuts. I'd had my heart set on the raspberry one (I'll do anything for raspberry) but alas had to settle for plain cinnamon and a salted caramel option. There was nothing wrong with the quality of the cronut - it was flaky and fluffy in equal parts. I just don't think this food trend is for me. Still, the figures don't lie and these babies are literally walking out the door for Flour & Chocolate. I'm yet to sample their equally famous donuts (give a girl time!) but their mini bar cakes always go down a treat for a simple morning tea when the parents visit or you just want to eat a small slice of heaven without the guilt of a whole cake still staring back at you.

Segue to me waking into Brewbakers and that smell of fresh delicious baking is so pronounced that my tastebuds are crying with emotions...so many emotions. A little hidden gem in Albion, Brewbakers is arguably the best bakery in Brisbane...if not Australia. From perfect bagels and baguettes to sinful donuts, Brewbakers is part of my weekly ritual and they never disappoint. Service is always with a smile, caramel slices are perfectly gooey and the bread a perfect combo of crusty and chewy. So it is clear that I am am fat and, if that is the case, I am totally happy with that. You skinny people clearly don't just know how good Brewbakers really is!

For one thing, they've been woefully inefficient with service on both of the mornings I visited. People wait at the counter to order for far too long, and another line of people sits and glares towards the kitchen waiting for food. For a breakfast place, speed is awfully important; most of us customers have work/school to get to and we're eating out because we want to be full quickly. They managed to overcharge me once too, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and ruin everyone else's day by holding up the line. The menu is expansive, and vegan- and GF-friendly, and the chia pudding and avocado toast I've gotten have been quite tasty, though the bread in the latter was a bit tough, which isn't a good thing for a bakery. Honestly, some things I grade on a curve because Australia sucks at them, but breakfast is the other way around: the bar is quite high. There are two other places that consistently execute similar things better just on this street. And another prominent one I still haven't tried. So I may come back, but I have to say that while they are offering some good stuff, the price is too high and the service is too low to be rated alongside the best cafes in West End.

There are heaps of varieties - you'll know the usual suspects - chunky beef and bacon, pepper, chicken curry, beef and tomato, etc. I knew they tasted great but just discovered yesterday when talking to one of the local business women that they get their meat from the busy butcher a few doors down. It was previously one of West End's numerous Vietnamese bakeries, and while it remains a bakery the new owners seem to be going for more of an up-market French boulangerie vibe. I ordered a filled baguette and a takeaway Di Bella coffee. The delivery of the baguette was instantaneous and while I waited for my coffee I didn't stand on ceremony, biting into the baguette and assessing their work. The bread itself was quite good, with a slight glaze to the crust and a pleasantly chewy inner. The toppings - chicken and avocado - fairly well-executed for a simple combination. The coffee however took too long to arrive, causing me concern about whether I'd be late for my appointment. What should for an experienced barista take 1-2 minutes tops took more like 4-5. Even worse, when the coffee arrived, it was insipid and milky, leading me to think the maker either didn't dose enough coffee into the group-head or used an insufficient one-shot for the large cup. Either way, it was a deflating first coffee for the day. The price also seemed a bit excessive at close to $12 for the coffee and baguette. Considering I could get a tasty roll significantly cheaper at one of the several Vietnamese bakeries in the neighbourhood, if I go back here it will probably be to buy bread for home use.

A one stop shop, where you can buy & stock up on things you need for your pantry at home or simply marvel & treat yourself to the best things in life. CAKE and BAKE also have their own blend of coffee, and we can't of course forget about the indulgent cakes! Which look absolutely divine. We came away with a good number of treats of course, and let's just say they are delightful! It's going to be harder and harder to keep to our exercise regime at this rate. Tip: For those wanting to visit, there is onsite parking but you'll have to get there early. CAKE and BAKE is open daily from 7:30am but will open earlier on Saturdays so be sure to stop by on your way to the markets of after! We will be back to try their coffee. It's the sort of bread that has an addictive quality. They offer pastries and savory items as well. The spanakopita I tried when I needed a meal was good but not earth-shattering. I suspect the bigger breads are where it's at, but there's plenty else to try. This location does have some seating if you want to eat a pastry and coffee there.
