    Space Command Center

It was cold outside one Dec afternoon but I wanted to do something with my 3 children ages 8, 6, & 2. I used my Groupon app to find ideas. Columbia is not far so I drove out to the DoodleHatch museum location to check it out. It appeared to be a repurposed department store in a shopping center with a few other businesses. Plenty of free parking available. The staff member was very pleasant and gave us an introduction upon entry. DoodleHatch museum is a great place for you to take your children to use their imaginations to explore the different exhibits ranging from a "Giant's Bed" to a "Space Command Center". The kids were able to play dress up and perform on stage, use pianos & other instruments, draw, enjoy oversized games and put together puzzles. My husband and I even found ourselves caught up in the pretend play with them which I appreciated because we don't get much time to actually engage in playtime with them. The manager told me about the different workshops they offer for t- shirt making, etc., and also the clothing for sale. The kids played for a strong 2 hours and passed out in the car on the drive home. They REALLY enjoyed themselves! I recommend this place for anyone looking to allow their little ones to get creative and burn some energy. Especially in the winter when it's too cold to be outside! They also have a complimentary book case with some good reads to take along with you. Admission was less than $20 for my family of 5 (Purchased tix from Groupon). Check them out!

Both kids (under 6yr/old) had a fantastic time playing and were only agreeable to leave bc they got hungry. It's an odd place. Eclectic collection of what I'd imagine freshman/sophomore college art students might make. Definitely some stuff that was creepier than I would have expected. But, kids loved using their imagination! Check Groupon for discounts before you go.

Since I didn't have to work today until 2pm, we took an opportunity to go on a "field trip!" We went to a place called DoodleHatch and it was AMAZING! HIGHLY RECOMMEND for anyone with kids! It's an immersive, interactive arts installation (and play space). Incredible!!! My girls had a blast! #doodlehatch Sometimes they have Groupons available.

Art exhibits turned into children's play space? They have you and your kids wear gloves throughout the space. It is an hour long and there is a space exhibit at the entrance that is open to all. It is $30 for an hour and it is pretty easy to schedule and reschedule if needed. Masks required. There is an area to paint.

HIGHLY recommend this unique experience for a multitude of reasons. A huge reason being amazing photo opportunities!! We made a last minute call due to expected rain on prom day for photos. They were not only agreeable, they were extraordinarily accommodating! When we arrived barely on time they made wonderful suggestions and were very tolerant of our chaos. I look forward to having more time to fully explore this incredibly unique hands on art installation. Thank you again from Sarah and the Prom crew 2022!!!

An entry from "ManneqART: Sculpture on the human form". There were so many cool pieces from that contest here.

Thank you for having an appointment only day. I came with a friend that wasn't fully vaccinated yet and is Covid susceptible. She really appreciated getting out & seeing beautiful art and having the place to ourselves for a whole hour! Can't wait to bring my family back on a regular day!

I came here specifically for the Amy Sherald collection and was not disappointed. There is plenty of street parking and it doesn't cost much. They also have parking lots in case street parking is hard to find (I'm pretty sure it's hard to find street parking during weekdays because its in the JHU area). Check in was super easy. I was lucky enough to secure a free Thursday ticket, otherwise, there is an admission fee for the exhibit. Finding it was super easy because the staff gave great directions. It was crowded but the flow of the space made it not so overwhelming. All of her paintings were beautiful and meaningful. I loved that they included information about the pieces, what made her choose certain colors, how she chose what height the paintings should be placed and a short video of how she started her career and her process of creating. After leaving her exhibit, I wandered off to see other portions of the museum. The collections were beautiful. I didn't get to see everything because it was getting late but I look forward to visiting again soon.

The evening started with light refreshment in the Level 1 lobby. Then, we went into the Graham Auditorium to hear Kate's vision for the future. It was really interesting. We were then encouraged to visit three floors of the museums that were open. There we could experience hands on explorations, conversations with curators, behind-the-scenes stories from conservators, sneak peak at new and returning exhibitions, and learn about volunteers programs. Being a member of The Walters really has so many benefits. On each floor, they also were serving more refreshments. We were excited to be able to see the Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture. It will be on exhibit until August 9, 2026. What an exhibition this is! We were so excited that we were able to view this without any crowds. What an incredible artist Dourien Fletcher is! Her work is just stunning. It was interesting to see the breath of her work in jewelry, costumes, film, etc. You will see simple to elaborate pieces of jewelry and so much more. Me, I like reading up on whatever catches my attention. It was fun to read that a certain lady's head did not belong to the body it originally arrived at the museum with. Regarding another collection, I read that the artists would inscribe their names and certain references, which weren't necessarily correct! And a piece of aged donated gold was discovered to have been crafted more recently due to its popularity amidst its lack of supply, as the wire had evidence of having been extruded, and the holes were cut with scissors. Yup, don't just go around believing everything! We spent perhaps 2 1/2 hours meandering the halls. If you get peckish, they do have a snack counter where their sandwiches and wraps top out at $13.

Some Da Vinci stuff, modern art (in the east building), statues, furniture, and paintings galore. Every piece is displayed in a way that brings out the colors and life of them. The lighting people here must keep busy. It's amazing how old they are and how good they look, with zero plastic surgery... although I'm sure there's some restoration happening. This sentence fits the "things you can say about art that you can't say about your partner" category. This was probably the most difficult museum to navigate though. There's no clear way to see every room as you'll be going different directions, through different doors, hitting dead ends, and at certain points, going the wrong way even though there's not logical order to exploring. I used the paper map to make sure I saw everything... and it was a lot of work to do so. One thing that was interesting that for people wearing backpacks, the staff made them wear them on the front like they were human kangaroos... which is brilliant as people are F'ing idiots swinging them around without any care in the world if they're going to hit something (they should do this on airplanes too, BTW). So my advice, leave the backpack in the car or the hotel unless you really need all that crap with you. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this museum or not, but ended up really appreciating the beauty of some of the artwork. Moreso with the Oil Paintings on the 2nd floor of the middle building. And that Da Vinci painting in person... pics don't do it justice. Italians just do it better, I guess...

Crowd levels were manageable when I arrived, with only a brief wait to check in, but it was noticeably busier when I left around 3:00 p.m., with about 10 people waiting in line. The experience includes both indoor and outdoor art, so be prepared for a fair amount of walking, including some uphill sections. Plan on spending 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. I also recommend booking tickets at least a couple of weeks in advance. When I visited, all remaining time slots for the day were sold out. Because of the extreme heat, part of the grounds was closed during my visit. The museum provided white umbrellas for sun protection, which I highly recommend, even if you have a hat and sunglasses and the stamina of a horse. Just note that umbrellas are not permitted inside the pavilions or gallery buildings. One thing that could be improved: I found only one water station, and it dispensed warm water. There are benches throughout the property, but much of the outdoor area is unshaded so on hot days you're unlikely to sit for long. The map provided at check-in was very helpful for navigating the grounds. AC is ample in all the buildings including the food venues. My favorite installations were Alex De Corte's exploration of humor, satire, violence, and tenderness through neon installations in The Pavilions and Faith Ringgold's "Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima?" You'll have to check them out for yourself to see why!

Some of the outdoor sculptures were visible, though a few pieces were either being relocated or blocked off. There were not many, so it made for a quick walk around the circular exterior. Upon entering, we went through security, which led into the main lobby where there is also a café. The coffee was both expensive and underwhelming, so I would recommend grabbing a drink elsewhere. The museum has three floors, and I found it easiest to start at the top and work your way down. *Laurie Anderson Four Talks: one of my favorite exhibits. The installation was fully immersive, covering the entire room. The writing and drawings across all four walls really brought the concept together. *Adam Pendleton Love Queen: a visually striking exhibit that transitions into a black and white video. While the artwork itself did not resonate with me as much, the video left both me and other visitors in a quiet, reflective state. *Revolutions Art from the Hirshhorn Collection: more traditional in style and subject matter. I did wish there was more context provided for some of the pieces, especially the sculptures, as a few lacked historical explanation. *Basquiat x Banksy: a more modern collection that reflects themes of racial and class divide. The bold colors and strong perspectives made this one of the more engaging sections. *Big Things For Big Rooms: a bit too literal for my taste, as it largely consisted of oversized objects without much added depth. *Mark Bradford Pickett's Charge: an older but well maintained exhibit. The circular layout of the museum complemented the work nicely. The textures and use of color were particularly compelling. The gift shop offered a wide range of items, including pieces inspired by past exhibitions and collaborations. I especially liked the Basquiat and Banksy merchandise, though it was nice to see representation from other collections as well. Overall, this is an easy museum to explore in one visit.
