A fun race to mix up winter running routine. (Throughout the weekend there is a full, half…read moremarathon, and 5K.) The race takes place around the Pettit skating rink in Milwaukee. The number of participants is capped so the course doesn't feel overly cramped. It is also fun to be able to see the fastest (and the slowest) folks during the race as they pass you or you pass them. Volunteers / race directors are really enthusiastic about the event. Music is played through the rink sound system, which helps to keep the energy up throughout the race. Nice medal to finisher and entry fee includes a long sleeve tech t-shirt. Race is a bit on the pricier side (~$100), but I suspect that is because it is somewhat pricey to operate an event like this (i.e., facility rental, insurance, etc.) vs. the race organizers making a lot of money off of the entry fees. (I don't have any inside information on that point, just a gut feel.)

The ramps up to the top were great ways to exercise my little's weak ankle muscles. My oldest loved the covered spinner and the surprisingly difficult acorn search and find on the little kids section. Plus the "lily pad" swing, musical instruments and so much more. My kiddos have even asked to come back. Only thing keeping this from 5-star review is there is no bathroom or drinking fountain on site.

Pitch's took a few specialties from each of their other restaurants and serve them here with one of the most amazing views in the city! You enter off of Lincoln Memorial by the Milwaukee Yacht Club (across from Alterra by the Lake) and head for the public boat launch. Pitch's Express is located inside the round boat house, right next to the boat launch. I visited on Friday November 26th for an afternoon coffee with a friend. I had an Americano coffee which was just perfect. I couldn't say no to great BBQ, so I also had a Pitch's pork sandwich that was delicious! This place is really hopping in the summer, but also a great place to go during the winter to warm up. I really enjoyed the beautiful view of the lake and of the Milwaukee cityscape. During my visit I had the pleasure of chatting with John "Pitch". He had plenty of time to chat since it is a little slower in the winter. I plan to be back and to introduce more people to this hidden treasure. I may try one of his other great coffees or maybe a cup of hot chocolate.
